Anyone seen this e petition to reduce the working day for Hgv drivers from 15hrs to 12hrs.
I think it’s a good idea, but I know a lot will not agree with it.I think that instead of DCPC drivers need to take a course in MTFU.
HTH
Or perhaps, ‘bend over and take it like a good boy’?
Interesting this one …with the rise of accidents involving hgvs
There should def be a rule for night drivers ( with no opt out ) that drivers that start after 9pm and is still at work between 00.00 - 03.00 should be restricted to a maximum of 10 hrs and also be restricted to only working 4 days and then 3 consecutive nights off
The challenge ( And i speak from experience ) of working 5 nights driving a hgv is immense and i have seen drivers start a shift at 10 pm and Finnish then next day 1pm … This may be ok on days with natural sunlight etc etc but on nights it is lethal
so to sum it up
Night drivers max 10 hrs duty time with minimum 3 nights off
Day drivers max duty time 14 hrs with minimum 2 days off

Or even stand up for yourselves individually and stop hiding behind a spokesman to speak on your behalf
You will only get treated the way you allow yourself to be treated
I’ve been in this industry my whole life and have heard the same old ■■■■■■■■ over and over, we should do this this, we shouldn’t have to do that, blah blah blah…
Only thing is, nobody has done anything, my experience of working in a traffic office after coming off the road is that the drivers that gob off in the yard are the biggest brown nosers of all.
All these big ideas come from the big mouths and that’s all they ever are, ideas, they never get put into practice because at the first sign of confrontation, big mouths do what they do best, they run away.
Look after number one, there is no brotherhood, never has been…

No, what difference does it make what time a person reports for duty? A driver could be 5mins from starting his shift and the result would still be the same.
It is and always has been the case that you will put in long hours as a lorry driver, nobody holds a gun to your head, if you don’t like long hours, don’t drive a lorry. If you want to be a lorry driver, expect to work long hours. Simple really!

Only simple if you except it
Would you expect to get on a train that has no dead mans handle and a driver that has been at work for 15 hrs ?
If for your own safety and others you was restricted to a set amount of hours would you object ?
Signed. Roll on 12 hour days
It’s easy to see the drivers who are up to their eyes in debt.

Yes I would object. I would object because I would have objected to all the other ‘rules’ enforced on me over the years had I been given the opportunity to.
My personal opinion is that I don’t want the law interfering in my ability to earn money, if I want to work hard, then I should be able to.
If I want to earn good or extra money then I can put a few extra hours in.
Expecting good money for little work is a socialist idea, something I am very much against.

Or who have no home life and need time to relax … why should we have the attitude of ohhhh well that’s the industry we work in ?

So what if the law set THE LAW that you and only you could opt out of and if anyone was injured or killed as your decission to opt out then you would be held accountable for ?
So what are we talking about here?
Safety or time to relax?
I know I can, if I choose, work a 16hr day without killing anybody, I know this because I have done them often over the 28yrs that I have been driving for a living.
So it can’t be safety related. Which means that it must be a quality of life thing. Now in that I absolutely have a choice, if I want to work a 40hr week then my decision to be a lorry driver needs reevaluating.
I have just done that, I am tired of being away all week, tired of the long hours etc etc and I have got a job in an office, working 7-4, I would rather carry on driving lorries for the same money I will be getting, for working the same shift.
However that isn’t how it works, I don’t expect the government to step in and make everyone work to suit my own desires and I disagree with anybody who does.
drop a pencil in the office or go into the central reservation and cross 3 lanes of traffic going in the opposite direction

I think anything that mixes driving together with 15/16 hour days, especially when you factor in the total ‘awake time’ and resulting sleep deprivation probably involved in those types of figures over time,it’s the ‘risk’ that becomes an issue let alone quality of life. Then when you factor in the the a stupid 9/10 hour driving limit anyway then it just becomes a risky idea all to compensate for trucks spending too long not going anywhere because loading and tipping and other waiting about is taking up too much of a proportion of the truck’s time.Which is effectively a lose lose situation for all concerned. What’s needed is more flexible driving time limits together a reduction in the total day to 12 hours.IE 11 hours on duty regardless of how much of that is driving with an hour off for lunch mid shift.
As for socialism.Having to put in more than 12 hours per day total to make a reasonable living seems more in keeping with a tin pot commy country like Cuba or China than a civilised capitalist one like the UK.
Son: " Dad I want to be a lorry driver"
Dad: “They work long hours”
Son: “That’s ok, I’ll sign a petition to the Government so that the hours are reduced by law”

Where did I say I ‘had’ to put in more than twelve hours?
I said that I ‘chose’ to work longer, nobody forced me into it. Anyone that tried to push me harder than I thought was reasonable was very soon no longer able to use my services as my arse had ----> gone through the door.
Fifteens are fine by me, some weeks could use one more. Last thing i want is to be forced to kick my heels for another couple of hours, get on get it done!
There will always be what the operator/owner driver wants against what the company driver wants.

Or blimey this wagon is spending too long parked up not rolling anywhere. The driver is being paid to go no where and then has to be working when he should be resting and sleeping. So we’re not only losing money in productivety and wage costs we’ve also got the risk of knackered drivers running around. No problem just reduce the hourly rate ( or put the driver on mileage pay ) and who cares if he’s too knackered to drive just so long as he doesn’t go over the 9 hours driving time limit.
