This could in part be resolved by double signing IE speed limit for cars & speed limit for > 7.5 t.
This would highlight that different vehicles have different legal maximums and offer scope to up the > 7.5 t limit on good single carraige ways.
There’s already something similar to this, it’s called The Highway Code.
But, let’s face it, who seriously gives a [zb] what a car driver behind thinks, if they don’t know we can only do 40mph MAX (I’m lucky to achieve 40 sometimes) and they’re getting frustrated because they’re incapable of performing a simple overtake manoeuvre, that’s their problem tbh
It wouldn’t matter anyway. If we were limited to Mach 1, car drivers would want to go Mach 2.
Half of the so called A roads in this country aren’t safe to do more than 40mph with an LGV.
Until the road network in this country is brought up to a decent standard, leave the speed limits as they are.

The trouble is though Dave some are really good and it would be easy to do 50 on them as i’ve previously mentioned.
the old timer:
Agree with Wayneld the problem isn’t the 40 mph ( which i think should stay) it is the line of car drivers who will not overtake and then someone who does has to " queue hop " in and out to get by them all. IMO sometimes we do not help ourselves in the public eye by sitting 2 or 3 trucks in convoy so the cars cant overtake as the length of 3 vehicles with no apparent pull in is too much for them.
Exactly right and a very good point.Of course this boils down to drivers not keeping a safe distance which is quite common these days.
Selfish ignorant and probably arrogant with a bad attitude.

Yes I agree, I suppose the only way around that is to limit the poorer A roads to 40mph and up the better one’s to 50,but it would be difficult to sign them just for LGV’s.

The usual black hgv sign with a 50 incorporated in it would suffice.
Oxfordshire has many B roads that would be safer than A roads for lorries at 50mph. Admittedly these are downgraded A roads like the B430 and B4100.
Then there are A roads with weight limits which would make re signing pointless.

why do some drivers want the speed limit raised, is it so they can complete there days work legally, if so the dopey planner will lump more on you as you can now go faster from A to B, from what I read on here some drivers are on a low rate of pay and rely on extra hours to bump there money up, (do your planned route quicker and now get less money) sounds like a real winner for the drivers this one lads.
Drivers in general ain’t best known for thinking things through as evidenced by many responses to this post…

So, you’'re suggesting that most drivers, in general, are thick?..
I would not consider the responses as not being thought through or as thick but as them making a choice if they choose to SAFELY exceed the legal limits
Those that do choose to exceed them must be prepared to accept any consequences without complaining - unless they wish to complain to themselves !
And before anyone says I am a do-gooder I have been there and got the T-shirt in the 80s = full 12 with 3 of them for deliberately speeding in a 7.5 (60 in a NSL SC for example) and going to court to plead for my licence
Lorry ploughs into the back of a stationary car hidden by smoke. He was only doing 30mph. Result ?. Both occupants of the car are killed.
And that’s at 30mph. What’s a head on at 56 gonna play out like ?
If you need to do 56 on singles to complete your run you need a new job.
If you need to do 56 on singles because doing 40 annoys you you need a new career.

IMO that is more to do with inappropriate speed for the conditions which has nothing to do with any legal limit
My point was how bad the crash turned out, given the low speeds involved. A 30mph rear end shunt resulted in 2 deaths. We already have 80mph closing speeds as the limit. And people want 112
