Dutch marques: Kromhout

Kromhout started in Amsterdam in the middle of the 1920s, producing marine engines. In 1935 it got its licence to built Gardner engines so it made lorries as well. Later they assembled Leyland lorries. In 1961 it merged with another Dutch truck builder, Verheul.

I’m sure A-J, Eric and Alexander can fill us in with a bit more detail here. In the meantime, here are some pictures to start us off. Robert

hey, I have known only two in Belgium, how they came here don’t know, question for ERF ■■?
H & S have driven them as it was then called Hampenius and Stommel.

Bye Eric,

@Eric…I don’t know how the came in Belgium…later H&S became a part of Peninsular & Oriental, so P&O

Herewith an advertisement from 1956…Van Swieten and SBS (see earlier picture of Robert in blue-yellow)
were absorbed in the Nedlloyd-group…first Van Swieten was connected to DAMCO and SBS merged with the
company Goedkoop & De Geus (perhaps related to Daniel Goedkoop of Kromhout) and formed the company
Damco-Goedkoop&De Geus or in short Damco-GG, Spaanse polder in Rotterdam.

Duijghuijzen from Beuningen (still existing transport-company) had (and still has) a Kromhout V-4 diesel
producing 80hp and load-capacity was 6.140kg. The vehicle is from 1955

Nice example of combi-transport! Philips early used their tractors for both goods- and passenger-transport!

For local distribution (read intercompany transport between the many Philips-factories) the tractors were
operational for goods-trailers and in the evening, around 5 o’clock the employees were brought back home
in the region. The driver kept the combination at home and collected the employees the next morning.

Attached a Kromhout with a DAF-trailer (for passengers) of which there were many, at least 15!

Not the same vehicle but herewith two examples of the more heavier Kromhout for Van Elk in Haarlem

Cabbed by De Graaff of Zevenhuizen, a very nice fleet of Kromhout’s!

Hiya,

Funny to read about a dutch marque on a english site
I’ve got some pics of dutch heavy haulage specialist E.J. van Dijk who used some Kromhouts for the labour, mind you the quality of the pics aren’t that good, but afterall it’s been about fifty years ago since they were taken…

Herewith a Kromhout for Van Gelder paper-industry. The trailer is made
by Werkspoor-Amsterdam in 1934-1935. Pay attention to the special lift
enabling an extra roll! Van Gelder had several vehicles, not only Kromhout,
also Verheul and US-Indiana for which Albatros-Amsterdam was the dealer.

Two examples of Kromhout’s in Eindhoven, tractor/trailer from Arnold Maessen
and truck from Van Vroonhoven. The removal-body is made by Van Bergen of
Eindhoven where (in front of that workshop) the picture was made

Picture taken at the Dutch-Belgian border near Reusel-Arendonk.

Philips had several factories and possibly this one came from the
Turnhout-location. Not far from the border Van Steenbergen was
located, who had first international transports for Philips in 1920!

Some ‘recent’ input…from DAF-museum ( a Kromhout was preserved as that tractor was so
very much involved in transport for Philips and the bus-trailer from 1946 now in restauration)
to De Rijke-museum and the collection of Hesselman (Eternit was their best customer) with
also Verheul, DAF, FIAT (a disaster!!!) and Büssing for which they obtained a dealership short
before Büssing was acquired by MAN.

Nice line-up! Robert
