Them there wood pigeons sure put on a spectacular feather shedding display, even as an animal lover i find the drama of truck/woodie impacts grimly fascinating. Not so barn owl k.i.a,s,deeply distressing.
Had a few over the years, had a pheasant smashed the headlight nothing left of the headlight only some tail feathers, couple of badgers which one was last week and had a barn owl which flew in to the side of the truck then hitched a ride back to the yard. Only found him the next door on the floor so we took him to a wildlife hospital and he was ok just in shock.
But a few years ago one of our drivers was going to Banbury from Coventry (A423) early one morning and he hit some horses out of 7 only 2 was ok. Someone left or open the gate to the field but the farmer said they checked the gate the night before so we couldn’t claim of there insurance.

I bet that was grim. Reminds me of the Traffic Cops episode where someone hit 2 horses, killed both horses & the chap driving the car, that was shocking. Did not envy the guys dealing with that.
wood pigeon on the M11 coming from stanstead to the M25 in 1999,crapped the life out of me as it hit the windscreen, funny thing is the windscreen stayed intact not one bit of damage, but when I got back to heathrow I looked at the windscreen and there was the powder that birds leave when struck,a perfect shape of a bird in flight, wings out, everything, wish I had taken a picture, felt sorry for the bird though, obviously dead the impact was quite big,no way it would have survived, also hit a baby rabbit once, ran out just as I passed, the wheels clipped it and it was sent into approximately a dozen very fast somersaults from what I saw in my mirror landed back on its paws and ran off, very lucky bunny
Hit a pheasant in my Rangey a few years back. Bloody thing knackered my n/s fog light.
Pigeon flew into the passenger window on the wagon coming back from Hull once. Sh*t myself!!
I got whacked by a pheasant on the A76 out of Dumfries last year. Also, nearly put a transit into a ditch many years ago when a rabbit (I think) darted out in front of me on a country lane in Cheshire.
Another one from years ago. 1975, driving my Fairlane from Brisbane to Adelaide. Just on dawn, we’re doing about 80 / 90 mph when I saw an eagle coming across a paddock from my right with something in it’s claws… rabbit I think. It couldn’t gain enough height and flew in to my window, closed luckily for me. Terrific bang and no more eagle. Window still in one bit. One of those cases where you don’t know whether to slow down, go faster or stay as you are.
Hit one pheasant and it ended up in the load of sand I was carrying. I didn’t consider health and safety, the load wasn’t sheeted.
Another time I ran over a pheasant that had just been hit and was flapping around in circles on the road. I finished it off, which got angry waves from two oldish women walking past.
Have deliberately run over rabbits, clearly suffering with mixomatosis.
A couple of cats in the early hours whilst on flour deliveries, never stopped.
The best was a cat…it was hiding underneath our car on our driveway. The funeral was in a convenient wheelie bin a few doors down. I wonder if I could’ve claimed the reward, or even sold the corpse to the local kebab van?
Back when I was 18 I had a Fiesta Rs Turbo and the 1st day I had taken it out a Cat ran out from a garden and bounced up and down under my car made a few loud Thuds. I quickly stopped got out and see it still alive bleeding loads and shaking all the blood around the road with his head. I never forgot it was sad to see, all I kept thinking was this is proberly some little kids cat or a Old lady’s.
Hit loads of rabbits over the Years, most I believe had Mixi as they always ran towards you and you could see swollen eyes.
When I was on nights at DHL coventry coming home about 5am quite often the a45 would have dozens of rabbits on it (just sitting on the carriageway) pretty difficult to avoid squashing few, few year ago with daughter in car had wipers on and bird hit the windscreen just as wiper arm came down decapiated the bird head went flying off and body wedged under wiper arm (try explaining the headless birdy and blood accross the windscreen to a 5 year old!!) had a lad working for me call once just after he had left the depot to say he had hit a dear went out to fetch him and the deers head was through the windscreen on the passenger side!
Years ago was coming home through some where in Wales when it was raining and the road was absolutely covered in frogs getting to the other side for a few hundred yards. Cant imagine how many I squished but had no choice, was single A class carriageway and no where to stop, and for how long would I be waiting?
This little sucker was well jammed! Having hit most things, deer, owl, rabbit, frogs, fox and a dwarf (he wasn’t happy!) I think I need only hit a princess to have hit the entire cast of a Disney film!
I hit a pheasant on the mountain near home, so I stopped and popped him in the boot. Opened the boot at home and the b*astard flew out! Almost clean underpants time!
When I used to deliver parcels in a transit around Midhurst Petworth in West Sussex I would drive straight over a pheasant then hear a thud as it hit the main engine support bar that goes under engine
Taken our lots of seagulls with air dam or box. Leaving a cloud of feathers behind me.
The best/worst was when I was following my mate when I was on the coach’s. Both of us in late 80’s vanhool’s.
On a591 passing sizergh castle when an owl flew out on him. Feathers exploded everywhere.brake lights as he slammed on.
The owl had folded the screen in. Took ages to clean his seat.
my list of dumb animals that have hit me.
pigeon (several)
pheasant (several)
rat (1of)
deer (1of)
seagull (several)
removal truck (1of) hit me head on in car
My brothers car was hit by a dumb female animal on drink and drugs !
Had a fox trot straight under the front of my motor on the M6 at Kendal in the early hours a few months ago.
Don’t recall ever hitting a pheasant, although had a fee near misses.
I have noticed how stupid pheasants are, if they are at the side of the road and they are disturbed by the noise of a vehicle, instead of flying over the hedge away from the danger, they always fly across the road usually into whatever has disturbed them.
When I was doing m/e years ago, driving through Turkey when it was a white out with snow, birds could not identify anything to land on, and the only thing visible would be dark tracks in the snow from vehicles, so that’s where all these tired birds landed, with feathers puffed up for warmth, they looked like little old men, but unfortunately by then they were too tired to take off again when the next vehicle came along, result? a lot of squished birds!
I hit 11 rabbits one night. I will confess that after the second one I did start aiming for the buggers!
You may as well make the stew meaty!
