Driving Old Motors

Who drives an old motor ( say 10 years+)?
Be interesting if anyone still drives Seddon Atkinson, (Sandbach built) Fodens, ERFs or dare I suggest a Leyland■■?

there are 2 or 3 companies in the midlands that still run tidy fleets of ERF EC11’s some of which are older than 10 years

Not to mention the F88 on logs.

oh yes, Mr Weaver, forgot about him

Well our modern tipper fleet consists of 2 ,6 wheeler dafs L and M reg mostly used in the summer for carrying chippings for surface dressing (tar and chipping road surfacing) current off the road no tax but mot’ed.

L reg volvo FL7 8 wheeler , slower than a snail when loaded and needing double de clutched gearchanges in 5th and 6 th .

W reg daf 8 wheeler , knackered body  on her , jumps out of reverse ,wont go into fifth until warm .

oh and we have 58 Plate daf 8 wheeler  , nice truck but rusty thompson body lets her down .

My current truck is a Foden  Y reg, 3000 series (i think) with the daf cab , 380 cat engine with jake brake :grimacing: , shes an 8 wheeler hooklift , although tomorrow she is in tipper mode .
cheers Mike

Hands up how many people can remember aspiring to driving a new A, H or L reg motor?

I was driving this last year X reg and nearly a Million Km’s, not a tidy motor inside, tried my best clean it up though.

This fella is a bit of a character with his DAF 1900 delivers Malt to breweries, all rope and sheet and hard work. Our other driver at work is tenously related to him and reckons he gets some fantastic mpg out of it.

Don’t know about drivin old trucks but the boat/ship/seagoingbarge I am driving now was born in '86 and that was knackered when launched :frowning:

(opinions are of the author and not those necessarily of the owner)

Fibreglass cabs though, which obviously helps.

Irn Bru has still quite a few Seddons and ERFs. I had a “pleasure” of driving one of their Seddons and I am glad that I am not doing it full time

It only helps in a way that the cab doesn’t rust, it doesn’t help the mechanical side or the electrical side of things

Still plenty of 3 series scanias on the road and they are at least 15 years old now.
Not just 143s plenty of 113s and the humble 93 out there. There’s got to be a few 112/142s knocking about.
There was a bloke in south London who was running an old leyland six wheel grab from the 70s. Not sure exact model but it was the one with the cab they used on the Clydesdale boxer etc.

Surely all EC11s are older than 10 now? Last ones made in about 2000?

Ive seen an 05 plate registered one… :open_mouth:

Saw a G reg ERF E6 4wheeler about an hour ago; dropside tipper of Mustoes of Glos.
We used to have what was meant to be one of the last ERF EC11 8wheelers; W reg and lovely to drive.

Sent from my Iphone whilst waiting to load at LaFarge Banbury…been here 30mins and the shovels pratting about rather than load. Ive also found Ive got a slow puncture ffs :imp:

Why are lorries considered old at 10 or so years?I am more a bus man than lorrieiist but the buses and coaches seem to have a life of 25 years.
