Driving Old Motors

alamcculloch:
Why are lorries considered old at 10 or so years?I am more a bus man than lorrieiist but the buses and coaches seem to have a life of 25 years.

Tippers are old at 5 years…

there are 2 or 3 companies in the midlands that still run tidy fleets of ERF EC11’s some of which are older than 10 years

Fibreglass cabs though, which obviously helps.

It only helps in a way that the cab doesn’t rust, it doesn’t help the mechanical side or the electrical side of things

Good job they’re bulletproof as well then.

Hands up how many people can remember aspiring to driving a new A, H or L reg motor?

just searched the net and it looks like the old girl went on right upto 2000, 17yrs, not bad really

i was driving a k reg leyand 17 today only had 40k on here, starts half a turn, was also driving an m reg foden 3275 6 legger tipper on saturday, also company has an s and x reg foden alpha early cab both 6 wheels and cat 300 and ■■■■■■■ 380

Those pics above make me feel real old. I used to be a fitter on those 4350 Fodens and EC11 ERF’s etc.
And I cant believe that the “L10” 10 litre ■■■■■■■ is no longer used. So much has changed since I packed in the spanners. Oh- and the ole Leyland Freighter above!!! Did they ever make a good one of those ■■ :grimacing:

Me

I was driving a v reg one of those man f2000s until august gone absolute animal but indestructible only went as the firm didn’t want to spend 5k on an exhaust for lez

My first regular motor was a 3275 6wheeler on a N reg. I was enthusiastic back then; I’d put chrome “ladies” on the grille with a ■■■■■■■ badge, Foden scarves in the side windows, England flag in the rear and two smaller ones on the bumper. Engine tunnel had been carpeted by someone else and I’d cleaned it all up and there were Hook Norton beer towels across the dash
By the time I’d done that they gave me a 4340 6wheeler and done the same to that. They gave me a brand new Alpha 345 after 3 years or so and gradually the “blings” gone down to just a Canadian plate on the grille…
Judging from how poor our new motors have been (Volvo FEs are almost worn out at 3 years old :open_mouth: ) I’m starting to get fond of the old girl now…

This one?

well - the owner has been a driver for 50 years so I think he knows what works and what doesn’t!

In the last year we’ve just got shot of a pair of Y reg and a W reg Scania’s.

We’ve still got an R reg LDV tipper that is the biggest pile of crap going, I’m sure if we sent it to Africa they’d send it back. It is an absolute nail, rusted through and couldn’t pull a greasy man out of a bath. It gets thrashed and abused by whoever is unfortunate enough to drive it, in the 5 years I’ve been there it’s never had an oil change and still the thing won’t die.

Can you elaborate on that? Something to do with emmision standards or summin??

I was following a Volvo wagon and drag today on an old V-reg (must be 1979?). Looked pretty smart, name on the front was something like Richard Wiseman (?).

Not a great pic as it’s a photo of a photo; my first ever lorry on the left parked beside Dads. The V reg is now in our yard on static display awaiting restoration…

this 1987 e reg scania 92 is still working everyday

I made the pic of this old lady when I was in Poland about month ago… Does it counts?

theres a few old motors ive driven in the past that i’d gladly have back tommorrow (and they were old when i had them)
1992 daf 1900 four wheeler (first proper lorry i drove-twelve speed splitter and an eminox exhaust, proper king of the road lol)
1993 scania 113 eightwheeler (very cramped cab but so easy to drive)

My old girl, 12 year old and still chompin.
