Driving and manual labour

hi all
anyone have any ideas on what jobs there are out there that involves some manual labour aswell as driving?
im thinking that most drivers just want to drive so the fact that i am willing to also do physical work could maybe be used in my favour and hopefully get me work that pays well.
i got my class 2 a couple of months ago and work for a company that recycles car tyres, its quite hard work loading the truck myself but like i say i dont mind that, only problem is the pay is not too good.
i know some companies wouldnt want to employ me until ive got two years experience so maybe this is something for the future, just wondering if there is anything out there where the fact i am willing to load the truck could be used to my advantage.
thanks for any ideas.

What about the food distribution firms ,Brakes 3663 Bid vest. You could be a coal man they work hard, I know I have done it.

Brakes Food Service pay over 30 grand for class 2 work delivering to restaurants and the like. Plenty of manual labour and they take inexperienced drivers.

Removals?

That’s not a bad gig if you get into the euro driving part as well

Wise fella Spudgun, when there’s muck and graft involved, preferably with some skill and nous too and not just ■■■■■■■ stuff about you’ll find the money will be better, you are more difficult to replace too because most lorry licence holders only want to attend a steering wheel and that scene is well oversubscribed hence the money is crap.

You’ll find your niche mate cos you want to, keep your eyes and ears open see what others in the more unusual lorry work are doing, and good luck.
My niche was in car transporters, which is a lot more physical than it might appear, made a good living from it which set us up well, so there’s one suggestion but you’ll really need your class 1 at some point on that game cos not so many class 2 motors except in the salvage/recovery side of things.

I enjoy food work, I have my own route (West of Swindon as far as Bristol) and I’ve lost nearly 2 stone in the year I’ve been doing it. Ours is loaded but we pick the order from the load, so you have to use brain as much as brawn.
It’s the best money I’ve earned and it’s job and knock with any overtime paid without question. You do the route as you see fit too.
Some firms are harder than others but on the whole it’s amongst the best paid class 2 work, so much so it’s not worth me going for class 1.

I’ve done removals…it was good fun, but ultimately hard on the back. You’ve got to be a people person, though.

At one time tipper work was quite physical (I lost two stone in a short time when I started on them) but nowadays the manual side has gone alas. Removals and shop deliveries seem to be the main jobs requiring hard work, I’m guessing there is very little in the way of bag or brick/block work now that isn’t palleted or craned?

Pete.

Aye Pete, I remember loading gravel at Newlandside Quarry One of Tilcons in Weardale, You had to load out of a hopper and the bloke that controled the door movement was a right narnna, I was a tonne over the top one day, But the geaser on the weighbridge made you wait until another tipper came in that wanted the same type of stone and I had to shovel it into his wagon, Plus the lazy sod just sat in his cab while I did it, Mind you I wouldnt do it now, In fact I should have just tipped the lot off and said get it right this time, Of course being an owner driver I needed the work so I just had to grin and bear it, Regards Larry.

Don’t know any names of company’s.
But try places they do events etc.

Kind of thing where there’s am event on at the NEC you deliver the stalls and the stuff then help set up the stand and stuff.then days later take it all down and move on someware else
Events management kind of places.
.
To.be honest I’d quite like something like that. If any one has ideas

anywhere ive worked, then i always liked to consider that a driving job entailed driving, and that manual labour was a spaniard.

You could look into dray work, delivering keg beer and bottled drinks to pubs and clubs
It’s hard heavy work but it pays accordingly and you’re going to have at least one drivers mate with you
The hours are reasonable as well depending on what and where you are delivering
I’m not sure if there’s any significant difference in pay between class1 and 2 dray work either
One thing I can say for sure is that 22 gallon kegs when full of ale are heavy!

Exhibitions and events…can be hard graft but good fun as well.

Just keep in mind that your body (health) is a finite, non-renewable resource.

Look for scaffolding delivery/collection work. You’ll lose the silly masochistic tendencies within two days.

Livestock, some easy days, some hard days! It’s obviously a dirty job, but like anything, you get used to it! but plenty won’t want to do it, which is generally a good thing to the pay!

thanks for these answers, some good ideas on here.
ive actually done removals for 7 years before, and yeah i know i mentioned physical work but not up for that again for a number of reasons, and yeah i am trying to look after my health a bit more, part of the reason i dont wanna just be only driving all the time to be honest.
if im still gonna be driving in a couple of years ill be doing my class 1 so the car transporter side of things sounds very good,im reckoning id need a good bit of experience for that though.
ill be keeping my eyes and ears open for these events organisers aswell.
theres some good ideas on here for the future, for now though im gonna still be getting soaked chucking old car tyres onto my truck

Co-op would be a good bet. Most sites will now take newly passed, rates tend to be decent and xmas is round the corner.

I’ve always viewed the physical exercise and health link like the bs climate change agenda.Lack of exercise, including any and every excuse possible to get out of physical education periods at school ( thanks for all the sick notes mum  ) hasn’t done me any harm so far. While the handball work I did have to do in the job especially later in life has by doctor’s advice done ( a lot )more damage to my health in wrecking my back than any good.I probably would have ended up crippled in my 30’s if I’d have dome a lot more of that instead of all the years mainly sitting driving on trunking work. The fact is for all the medical science bs the human body is a very frail badly designed piece of junk when it’s used for heavy work.Especially in terms of the skeletal structure and joints like spinal discs, hips and knees and even feet.
