It makes my blood boil to see Agencies offering LGV 1 drivers £7.80 an hour - and that includes a SUNDAY! - when unskilled Posties (I was one myself in the mid 90’s) earn a basic £8.58 an hour for sticking letters through letterboxes…
Drivers earn their living sat on their arse, Posties walk miles, what’s your problem?
I’m thinking posties earn there money…
That’s not too bad a rate. I’m sure for some it would increase their pay packet by being paid £7.80 p/h.
It’s only a lump of metal on wheels we drive.
I wouldn’t do it, Sundays should be premium rate IMHO - although that seems to be going.
But I came off Buses / Coaches onto HGV’s, and on the former then all days were pretty much equal, so when I was considering a career change it was the advertised rates and the premium’s paid for nights, sats, suns and banks that made me choose HGV’s as much as my love for driving (at the time). I didn’t realise back then that every job I saw advertised was agency, that hit me later

why not go back to being a postie then.
Some of you people see nothing wrong with class 1 at £7.80ph for Sundays ?
I don’t think there’s anywhere in the UK where that can be described as anything other than taking the ■■■■

if only that was true!!!
Its murder backing that trolley of letters through some of those garden gates and lashing down the loads of parcels with straps and chains and getting the relevant licences to allow you to load your trolley and drive it safely so as not to kill anyone, the medicals can be traumatic if you have corns or flat feet…need I go on

+1
Lol that’s about half what I’d expect for CE on a Sunday. But I’m sure that some plonker will… Then the rate will never increase as why would it if they still fill the seat?

Yeah plus Unloading 26 pallets that weigh a ton and then reloading up and down a tail lift then onto next store rinse and repeat.
Posties have a union and one employer and stand together for better money and conditions, We work for lots over different employers which makes it hard to strike/withdraw labour.
If we don’t do it someone else will.

I agree.
Looking at it another way; what is the worst that can go wrong with a postman - he puts the wrong letter through the wrong door. A professional truck driver, on the other hand, has to navigate an expenive piece of kit, not to mention it’s cargo through sometimes immensely difficult surroundings. How can it therefore be justified the two are on a comparable income?
I was earning only very slightly less than that back in 1989 as a qualified HGV grease monkey FFS!
Fact of the matter is, these ■■■■ takers always know that some pole will take the job and arse reaming that goes with it.

That may well be but unfortunately that’s the way its going, I can see every day of the week being just a normal day with normal hourly rates in the not too distant future, this is the way employers want it and so do the government, the gvt may say they don’t like the idea of zero hour contracts either but they will do nothing to stop them, drivers cannot stand together, there are so many companies its impossible, also drivers these days are just drivers, no roping and sheeting in the snow and freezing rain (very little anyway), auto boxes, air clutch, air suspension, aircon and the list goes on, yes we may be in control of a huge pieces of metal that are worth hundreds of thousands of pounds in some cases but all we do is drive them, a lot of jobs now you are not even allowed near the back doors apart from checking seals.
It is sad that the cost of obtaining a license is so high with the rewards so low I agree but if you feel that way then driving something else about may suit better. I for one have not done any DCPC training, I will be hanging the keys up come the summer, you eventually get to the point where you feel screwed just once to often.
It’ll only go this way if people are stupid enough to drive for that rate on a weekend or night.
Companies who offer peanuts presumably will be happy to accept the damage the monkeys will do, good, hope they wreck every bloody motor and damage lots of customer premises.
Sooner companies like this go out of business the better.
Course those looking to hang their keys up this year could sign on and do the biz damage wise…
I still don’t know why truck driver are paid more then bus/coach drivers and I have done both jobs.
I’m Talking about being responsible for human life over some boxes of stuff for some big company somewhere.

+1 - although per hour, most bus companies pay more than most truck companies around here.
BUT per week is another matter.
And I’d certainly not want to do 70hrs driving a bus
I was offered a local bus driving job in October for £11 and hour

I think Stagecoach pay around that in Manchester, First are similar but would take 5yrs to get on ‘top tier’ wage.
BUT, they pay the same 7 days per week and whatever time of the day / night.
