I’m a new driver and have a question. Say Ive driven 3 hours and take a 45 minute break does this lose me 1.5 hours of driving time?
No. You can take another break after another 4.5 hrs driving and continue to drive up to your daily max of 9 (or 10 if you have one available).

Cheers.
So to clarify I could do
3 hours driving - 45 min break - 4 hours driving - 45 min break - 2 hours driving (or 3 hours twice in 7 days) - home
Yes, that is correct.

Twice in a week, 00:00 Monday to 24:00 Sunday, not 7 days. You could do up to ten hours of driving on a Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday which would be legal as two of those days are in one week and two in the next. Obviously you could only do that if you hadn’t yet driven for over 9 hours since the Monday and don’t do so again until the Monday of the third week.

Thanks. It’s a lot to get your head round, and then there’s the working time directive and working hours, but I think I’m more or less there now.
Just the reversing to master now, and I’m struggling a bit to put it mildly. It’s getting me well frustrated making a ■■■ of myself when other people are watching.
Was on my phone when I replied earlier, so didn’t have the patience to expand on the 7 days bit, hence why in my original reply I just put if you have one available
Slowly and small adjustments tris, don’t let testosterone flood your brain when people are watching you if you have to get out and have a look,do it. Take it easy.

I’ve been practicing on the carpet with a toy lorry this morning.

Forget the audience, pretend it’s just you and the truck. It will get easier before you know it.
Yes, it is a lot to get your head around. I only do it part time so I have remind myself every time but reversing is coming on nicely as I don’t really care what anyone else thinks, I’m proud of myself for achieving the licence plus all the other tests. I done good, sure I’m no expert yet but I’m careful and courteous; more than I can say for some!
Check out mydrivinghours.co.uk it’s free and it shows you what you have left to work with hourswise, I find it great to back up what I think I know [emoji4]
I find, reversing on correct size, move steering wheel up, window down, head out and watch the trailer wheels. Just keep a spare eye on the other mirror for getting too close to vehicles on the left etc.
It comes with time, don’t panic, nobody was born a reversing superstar.
My 1st time in an artic - assessment for test - I just climbed in and ■■■■■■ it, but 2nd time on the road and went into a tiny yard (think it was Servisair 2 at Heathrow?) and had to reverse in there, couldn’t get it right, was sweating and everything
I did a lot of playing with toy wagons when I was learning, me and me little lad, (at the time!) swapping trailers and backing on pretend bays, it sounds daft but it helps get your head round it.
Waynedl is spot on.
When I passed my test I one of my first jobs was doing 3 months for an agency working as a shunter in a small yard. For learning reversing it was the best thing I ever did. I can put a trailer anywhere I want it. However even after that and a subsequent 20 years experience, like all drivers I still have moments where I can have the biggest yard there is, painted lines on the ground and still not be able to reverse onto a loading bay without making a complete pigs ear of it.
say, a driver starts at 6 am, uses his 4.5 hrs driving time by 12:00 noon, needs to take a 45 mins break, finishes his break at 12:45,then he knows he won’t be driving much (definitely less than 4.5 hrs) but will be working for over 6 hrs, lets say he will finish his work at 19:30.
He won’t be able to use any POAs.
How many break, if any, does he still need to take before the end of his shift?

15 mins
Hasn’t the driver taken 45 mins already?
As far as I remember the regulations say, a driver needs to take 45 mins break, if he works for more then 9 hours, so in this case 45 mins break has already been taken.
Why need for an additional 15 mins break?

A driver should not work more than 6 hours without a break of at least 15 mins
1245 to 1930 is more than 6 hours

what ROG said is correct but I know a load of people who interpret it as once you have had a 45 you can more or less work until the end of your shift.

Well, if they are working more than 6 hrs after their 45 then that’s a load of people who are in the wrong
