god it ain’t rocket science, the rules are easy to follow!! the problem is a lot of transport planners ain’t got a clue and expect you to ■■■■ wonders. the new digi tacho’s display what you’ve done, but if like me your still on anologe then the best money you can spend is on an hour guard or similar. then you can’t go far wrong.
my biggest problem is my 90 hr fornightly spread, thats pushed to the limit every week, but thats just one of the things you have to put up with when you tramp, the rest just normally falls into place
prockie:
Does any one actually know the tachograph rules, or is it just too complicated? Or is it quite simple for the driver to know and work out how long he has, and when it’s best to stop and save the time? If being on the fork park at the Port Of Felixstowe under by face frame for 34 mins counts as rest and if 12 mins under canopy, staring at a shift change in place, is off your driving time or not? All very confusing - how do you know all this drivers?
Is this supposed to be a serious question ?
If you don’t know the rules then get off the road.
the rules are complex which has its advantages. vosa and the police know 80% of them. but i know 98% of them.
this gives me a distinct advantage.
Was on a delivery to lichfield on monday, and just happend to notice the computer on the goods in was displaying the tacho software, one driver had racked up 11 yes 11 infringments in a week lol.
I haven’t had an infringement that I wasn’t expecting in nearly 2 years, so I must be doing it all right
“Prockie, why don’t you come clean as to who you are and why you’re here?”
I’m so sorry I have not checked back and looked at this for a while. I have not set up email alerts for when people post on here in reply. I would love to come clean…
I am an online developer with an HGV licence, about to bring out an iPhone app for the haulage industry and I am checking the need for the elements of the app’. While I can see the need, I am making sure how many drivers would actually access it with iPhone or if it has to come out on Android too (more money of course). I also need to check out what the app would be best served doing and the tools that drivers need.

Lets see if I understand this correctly
You can’t understand the regulations and you’ve developed an iPhone application to keep drivers straight with the regulations that you don’t understand
If I’ve got this right it begs the question … why
edit:
OK I think I see it now, all this crap about how do we understand the rules is just an excuse to spam the forums in the hope of getting people to buy your app
MADBAZ:
I think they should modify the rules so you have to have a min 20 minutes rest every 3 hours with a max SHIFT time of 13 hours in 24, with a max of 5 shifts in a week, non of the reductions, extensions, compensation & wtd bollox.
That sounds extremely complicated to me, and worse still not even flexible…
What Rules…?..Do what most of us do…drive till the boss tells you to stop…then after a couple of hours in the chair…work till your tired once more, then do it all over again…its mainly guess work…but you can rest on a bay if you have a chalk stick…and a couple of cones…
I don’t have a iphone or android phone yet. I used have
a drivers hour guard which kept me legal until I broke it
accidentally. I have not bought the new one I use the tacho
and pen and papper at the moment to work out my hours
and any quires I have I ask and find this site a great help.
I’m all for anything that helps to do the job better and would
by something if its good but as said above if you don’t know
the rules its as only good as the info you put in it. I don’t know
you or not judging you and wish you success with it and would
like to see it working and know it makes the job easier.
I have a few questions is it like the drivers hour guard but in an
app form for phones?. Also if you can post more info on what it
is going to do ect as is it not coming out this september time?.

There’s plenty already out there, some use the gps to know when you’re moving to record driving time, some even work as a ‘road angel’ too, think you’re a bit late to the party if I’m honest.

I have seen computer software that works just like that. The idea of Fit for Purpose clearly wasn’t in the build manual.
Things like Worked more than 6 hours without a 30 minute break
Driving less than one hour
Vehicle Overspeeds
Driven hours, even when Using Article 12
Taking excessive Breaks
Night Working Hours

Your app would have to work for iPhone, Android, Windows phone and BlackBerry.
If you don’t understand how the regs work, how are you going to make a usable app?

Theres already one called TTGaurd for the iphone and ipad and i think it works on other android stuff, I have it, it works extremly well, you cant go wrong with it and its on £4.99, i use it everyday (or should i say night?) and its currently sitting here in the background counting my daily break for me so i know at anytime how long ive been driving, resting, otherworking, etc, etc, etc.
Highly reccomend it, has been discussed on here before briefly.

Thanks for all the comments.
I am writing the app brief for the developer, after personally checking out the percentage of Android and iPhones that truck drivers have with them in the cabs, ensuring it’s viable for us to go ahead. The good news is that it’s going ahead!
Point taken about TTGuard and no I am not from a news paper! I am a novice truck driver that sees the potential for an app, as I am aware that I need help when I am driving as a novice! It’s a shame the app can’t help with the way drivers are spoken to at depots and yards but maybe that could change too!
The website is now live for this haulagesupport.co.uk/ with links to follow us on Facebook and Twitter and doing so would give you the latest news of any release and development or help needed with testing the app!
Comments at this stage would be appreciated as I am writing the brief this week!
Don’t ask me by the way, I don’t know nothing
why would anyone want an android in the cab with them.
let’s face it, an android is just another name for a dalek.
it’d be shouting and bauling “take a break, slow down, exterminate, exterminate”. you don’t need it.
and can you shag it? no. you’d do yourself an injury.

Since the app you’re thinking of / trying to develope has already been done, why not develope a language for ‘google translate’ from English to RDC and RDC to English.
“Sit over there and shut up” - translate - “Could you please sit over there Drive, we’ll give you a shout when it’s ready, but please double check in an hour incase we forgot due to us being stupid as hell, thanks”
“Bay 6” - translate - “Could you go on Bay 6 please Drive, then press the button on the wall and return to this uncomfortable, smelly waiting room to drink some of our luke warm ■■■■ water out of the over-priced machine rather than your own gourmet coffee in your comfortable cab? Thanks”
“Keys!” - translate - "We have to take your keys from you Drive, because some muppet who knows nothing thinks you’ll drive off with a forklift halfway in the rear of your trailer, we know this very rarely if ever happens but we must tell you it happened to 1 of our forklifts a few weeks ago when a foreigner of (insert nation / region here) origin saw the green light to his left and pulled off the bay, the forky had no warning by the engine starting, the vibrations through the trailer, the sound of the brakes being released and is in hospital in a bad way… "
etc
