I was driving my 6 wheeler fully loaded with slabs of marble&granite on the M3 last Wednesday in lane 1 & noticed ahead a hgv broken down on the entry slip road & noticed a car coming onto the slip road so i checked the mirror to see if i could get into lane 2 but there was traffic in lane 2 so i stayed in lane 1 when all of a sudden the car in front of me stopped to let the car enter the motorway! Luckily enough i had a decent gap between me & the car in front but still only just managed to stop before hitting the car. The driver was totally oblivious as to what was behind her & i have never had this happen before where somebody actually stops on the motorway to let somebody enter & was totally dumbfounded by her actions!
So dumbfounded it took 4 days to gather your thoughts and type it up?
Dash cam footage? Without dashcam then it didnt happen, everyone knows that!
No i am still dumbfounded about it but i only got home last night&i don’t have internet access when i am out on the road. Also i dont have a dashcam fitted.
Wasn’t really a decent gap then, was it? A “decent gap” would allow you to stop safely even if the driver in front did a full-on emergency stop (or crashed into a stationary vehicle).

Errr, he did stop safely so it clearly was a decent gap
Happens on the A34 on a daily basis.
Best one was when 2 cars were coming up the slip road, first car quite rightly saw me coming and braked to pull in behind, car 2 drove round car 1 and stopped in lane 1 to let them pull out! I stopped inches behind them waiting for someone to rear end me.
They both carried on oblivious

Did the driver in front do a full-on emergency stop though…?

Stop doing that typical Trucknet thing and trying to create problems where there are none. I wonder why anyone posts on here sometimes

Thank you ! A sensible comment.

Although rare it does happen, maybe a missunderstanding between 2 drivers or an after you no after you moment buta hazard on the road can cause drivers to be more courteous than one would expect.
Fair do’s for being a safe distance and showing a good example of how professional drivers are prepared for the unexpected.
Also holding station in lane 1 causes less disruption to other traffic than trying to barge into lane 2 in a girly panic like I witness on a daily basis.

Thanks for another sensible comment
Do you drive for cosentino Alf ?
Just for the record i had left a sensible gap & was able to stop in 3 brake movements so as not to do a full on stop & risk shedding the load. Before anybody makes a spurious comment the load being insecure & it should not shed after hard braking the load was well secured to our industry standards.

Most of his vehicles have the safety bars on so the load cannot go any further that that. Who do you work for Dan?
So to sum up, a driver did something stupid, a more aware driver travelling at a sensible distance was able to stop in time to avoid a collision then everyone got on with their day.
Nothing to see here, no story, move on, nothing to see and no drama no matter how hard people try to make it one.
The OP was simply asking if it was common to see someone stop on a motorway to let someone out, that’s all.

+1
It was just a post stating that in all my 40 odd years of motorway driving i had never experienced somebody actually stopping on a motorway to give way to another vehicle that was entering the motorway.

Sounds like you did a good job there. Well handled.
