I lasted 22 seconds then got bored…just ban mobiles from being used whilst traveling and enforce it by a non money raking option,or accept its a fact of modern life.
We are supposed to be better than car drivers, maybe we should start proving it. Truck drivers SHOULD be penalised heavier in my opinion.
Absolutely spot on! Any licence is a a privilege, a Vocational Licence more so. Every single Driver driving a Large Goods Vehicle should at least be attempting to drive professionally, unlike the idiot in charge of that wagon!
That c**t should be banned from driving any vehicle for life after showing such a disgraceful disregard for other road users!

The lack of policing and enforcement of drivers is the problem. People unfortunately always try and ‘get away’ with things, one of the side effects of being a human being.
Because people cannot be trusted, we need to be watched, but when no-one is watching we will still try and take the ■■■■. Inward facing camera’s are seldom watched, and as such drivers still think ‘nothing will happen to me’.
If you were caught ■■■■■■■ around with your phone and it would cost you a £500 fine, SOME would stop. If you lost your licence for 3 months SOME MORE would stop.
It really is about time wagon drivers were SEVERLEY punished for using their phone.
Not just us lorry drivers, needs to be all drivers.
6 month driving ban would stop it.
It’s an instant ban for drink driving, but guess what? Drivers still drink and drive.

DieselDog- Nobody should use phones whilst driving, but piloting 44 tonnes is going to cause a lot more carnage than 1.5 tonnes.

I can’t argue against penalising truckers harder, but when it comes to driver facing camera’s, I’ll only agree to it when Joe Public agrees to it and we all have them facing us when in a vehicle. I can’t see that happening, and expect Joe Public would call instead for more Police!
The camera made no difference in this tragedy, it just proved guilt!
Apparently the driver initially claimed his brakes failed.

I don’t see any reason why this case didn’t merit the full sentence for causing death by dangerous or careless which is 14 years. On that note trying to lie about his guilt by blaming vehicle condition should have included a prosecution for attempting to pervert the course of justice and an appeal against the sentence as it stands to have it increased.
I said it on the other thread about this, but look at the mug shot of the driver. Would you employ him? He looks such a picture of intelligence that I’d be cutting his cv into little squares and penning a rejection notice before the interview had even ended.
And a +1 to the post about EE drivers seem to use phones more.
dieseldog999:
Bluetooth…earpiece…job done…no need to use it unless your txting or otherwise passing the time…I wonder what kind of sentence all the sanctimonious holier than though brigade would wish upon themselves if they mess up…never judge a man till you’ve walked a mile in his shoes…every time someone drops a bollok, then the same ones start baying for blood and saying he got off lightly…
Heres another angle on this debate.
Up until about 5 years ago, I would take the odd call whilst driving, that was until the company I work for mandated from then on that anyone caught using a device whilst driving would face instant dismissal, that also includes blue tooth calls.
From then on, I no longer touch any mobile device while I’m driving, so why is that ■■
Deterrent would be my guess!
And until the deterrent is made harsher by maybe a ban, bigger fine etc nothing will change. The prospect of me losing a good well paid job was enough to change my attitude!

Extrucker you are being a bit hard on yourself. The coroner exonerated you,you cant see through metal any better than I can. We could all find ourselves in your shoes at any time.I used to answer the phone but I dont bother now.
Thanks for your words. I’m far from perfect when driving but I don’t do anything like I see drivers doing. They think it won’t happen to them.
Perhaps the police should remove this “O” licence element from punished drivers?
…If not, then guess how many firms that actually have the driver-facing cameras already - are NOT going to use them to report crimes to the police, but “try and keep it in the family” instead.
Eg. If you get filmed on the phone - you get called into the office, and maybe dismissed.
RATHER than “Reported to the police”.
Result?
Driver just moves on to another firm where he might last a bit longer before “being caught” doing exactly the same thing he’s never felt the need to “reform” himself away from.
Has there ever been a case where the driver-facing camera evidence actually saved the driver from a rather nasty accusation? Forward facing ones can do this (as in the vid below) - but what about the driver facing ones?
Driver-Once-More:
The driver, acording to reports, was selecting music on his phone, not answering or recieving a call.
Nice to see someone is paying attention.
Makes you wonder if people cannot even digest news correctly how the hell can they have the ability to drive an LGV?
Glad to see that tonight’s ITV and BBC news have highlighted the incident, together with the in-cab camera footage showing the driver using his mobile.
I/You hope that this broadcast will make people think twice about ever using their mobiles whilst driving ever again,
