For a fair amount of years now I have been in the fortunate position that I no longer need to apply for jobs, rather they apply to me. This concept may come as a shock or appear odd to some, but you may apply the same principles as myself when you apply for jobs. I have invested a lot of my time in both study to gain professional qualifications and money by loss of earnings whilst studying at University and indeed by being on low wages as an apprentice. I now pick the work that suits me & am choosy who I will work for, although you yourself may not have my standing and respect, you can still have the very same confidence at interviews as I have. Your driving skills and work record could be your strength that you may not realise. You may be selling yourself short if you have no confidence in an interview and assessment drive. Of course I am aiming this post at the newer drivers but I have noticed a distinct lack of confidence in some more experienced drivers.
When I was a young driver in the 1960s and 1970s,I got the impression that you were not doing yourself any favours by mentioning any qualifications relating to a higher standard of education.Even in the 1990s and the 2000s with a lot of extra experience of driving, working and living abroad and an ability to speak four foreign languages,it counts for nothing.
The problem is, for drivers like myself who have come from other industries, how do you explain what you’ve been doing for the past 10, 15, 20 years? I’ve got a drawer full of certificates and qualifications, I’m certainly not going to be embarrassed by them.

Oh my, this is the worst thing you could possibly do to hamper your job prospects. You have totally had the wrong advice given in this respect. This is exactly the reason for my post. As an example I hold “good” driving jobs with good terms & conditions for the very opposite of your reasoning. Thank you for sharing.
That’s a very loud trumpet.

You definitely do not want to be dumbing yourself down and hiding your certificates, your past experiences and work history along with qualifications is the new era for drivers nowadays, by not putting forward CORRECTLY your previous experiences and quals and showing potential employers that you are going to be an asset to them, once again will inhibit the type of work you will be able to undertake. This post is particularly interesting to me as I am certain there are a lot of drivers out there who think it best to actually wipe out some of their past. It is true it is clever to be dumb but this is not a literal meaning.

Hi Uktramp ,
Firstly I say this with total respect as I enjoy most of your posts and find them mostly thought provoking and intelligent, but recently you seem to be coming across like you are “chest beating” constantly but hiding it within a topic for debate.
I have been in the industry for less than 6 months and one thing i have found is that people come in to the industry from all walks of life and career backgrounds , you seem to portray the average trucker as a knuckle dragging half wit who should be grateful that you have been sent from hgv heaven to save their souls.
I was previously a chief marine engineer in the Royal Navy and in an instructing / teaching role before leaving but this is my past , I choose to drive not because I cant do any thing else but because i enjoy doing it and agency work suits me but every day I have to ask for advice and I feel humbled by all those who take the time and effort to help me out.
Like in life , stereo types dont work , not all scousers will rob you , not all black people are drug dealers and not all truckers are thick…
I held a foreign going unrestricted masters ticket along with all my other qualifications but don’t tell anyone else I get inundated with job opportunities and people may get the idea I’m a big head …
I’m fairly modest.
No, I’m very modest.
I’ve a lot to be modest about.

I used to be conceited, but now I’m perfect.
