Downton, poor poor pay

eagerbeaver:
It’s the best job ever.

And you should know, you’ve had enough of them (jobs, that is)

Sent using smoke and mirrors.

It’s not great, but it’ll suit someone who wants to gain the experience they need to “live the dream” elsewhere.

I regularly get asked how much I earn by the companies trunking down to me, and I always answer, “how many times you’ve shagged the missus this week?”

It doesn’t matter what someone else is earning compared to me because it doesn’t matter if I care or not. If I wasn’t happy with my wedge I would either adjust my efforts or my employment situation.

Unless you work out of that depot, and all live in the same houses, buying the same food, driving the same cars, ■■■■■■■ the same women, it just doesn’t compare.

The o/p could have been a bit more tactful in his wording if he wanted to have a pop at Downtons.
Most of us know there are a few Downton drivers on here so why choose to ridicule them in the ‘‘WHO WOULD WORK for ■■■■ poor pay like this’’ bit. :unamused:
A comment aimed at Downtons themselves, but not knocking the existing drivers would have sufficed.

I’m assuming he is agency in a lucrative area, on more than average money, so it is maybe a gloating excercise, who knows.(…who cares)

I have worked for firms abroad and UK on mega money, but unlike the o/p, my level of maturity exceeded coming on here having a pop at those who were not and gloating.

I am on average money now, but at the moment the job suits, I aint maxing out anymore, I’m home every weekend, I know what I’m doing every week, I have a reasonably quiet life on it so it suits me.(I aint a Downtons driver btw)
I suspect the Downton lads on here are the same, so let them crack on with it, and I am sure they won’t give a flying ■■■■ what the o/p thinks of them anyway.

Robroy i think the op thinks he is the best driver in the country when in reality hes just a ■■■■.I did ask how much they should pay but he did not want to answer.I think he wanted it to go in a diffrent direction to what it did.

On top of the basic they also get DCPC paid for and time attending course paid for, parking paid, £25000 DIS payment.

£5 meal allowance, whats that going buy you these days?

also fuel bonuses?? if they give you a route with steep hills, or have a heavy load how can fuel efficiency be a drivers problem? i bet most are automatic aswell.

I regularly achieve my fuel bonus, mind you I’ve never had the full hit £250 a month, but I’ve done £150 a time or two, and £50 about half a dozen times. I can drive in eco mode if I want, but that’s down to me. I prefer full chat and make the delivery, or the toss it off somewhere that 56mph allows.

Alas, it’s easy for people to gloat when they are sat on a good number with hours that suit them. I was in that situation once, but then my circumstances changed and the hours didn’t suit anymore. We all know the reality is that it’s quite difficult in many parts of the country to land a job that ticks all the boxes for hours, location, pay & enjoyment, not every good driver can have a top job, your usually having to make a sacrifice in one department.

As an example, some guys would rather cop unsociable hours for the wonga (or be lucky enough for them to suit), whilst others would rather take a hit on money & work more hours to get their weekends off and/or do a job they just enjoy or is on the doorstep.

Each to their own. Plenty of top quality drivers work for the likes of Downton’s, often in areas where there are better hourly rates available, but they all have their own reasons for being there. Nobody opts to work for £9ph instead of £12ph if it’s a no brainer.

I’m newly passed and just accepted a job on nights doing artic and wag and drag.

Hourly rate is 9.80 however I get £25 week extra for driving a trailer and £55 a week bonus providing I turn up. 47.5 hours per week Monday night to Saturday moring.

All I have to do is take a truck to be tipped then come back and take another truck to be loaded then come back same route every night unless i get my ADR then I get another run. If I get back before my 9h I still get paid for the 9h and I can bugger off home early.

As a newly passed class 1 driver this is perfect for me as I’ll gain experience driving artics and doing wag and drag. It also benefits me in other ways like not having to get up in the morning cause I hate having to get up at stupid times I’m really not a morning person but best part for me I don’t have to load or unload anything. I’m not lazy either I’ve delivered furniture all over UK and worked for P+H but this is ideal for me and I see it has an opportunity.

Sometimes you have to not be picky about money just to get some experience under your belt and quite a lot of places now ask for 6 months rather then 2 years so even if someone does it for 6 months it’s still valuable experience and the wage part can be sacrificed. Having done cleaning jobs and security and warehouse thone two other jobs this is a doddle.

Well when the A1 is closed at Scotch I do a route that is with a heavy load running at 43 tonnes on the return journey, steep hills and in an auto. I have to contend with Windy Hill in both directions and all the hills on the M6 including going over Shap and I can still return 9MPG. Trouble is many drivers don’t even get that running on the flat with a fairly light load.

Theres far too many on this forum who will knock anything below £10ph. Theres many drivers over here on 9euros an hour and have been working the same company for years and very happy with their lot. They’ll also get their arse out of the drivers seat and help unload where they can which is more than can be said for many brit drivers who supposedly earn £12-£15ph and refuse to do anything else but drive. The job advertised will suit many that have been out of work/ dont want to work for an agency or newly qualified drivers.
No doubt all those on here who take the ■■■■ out of relatively low pay/ supermarket drivers and agency are all on mega money, drive a blinged up Scania V8 with Eminox stacks, Alcohas, polished tanks and peekaboos and only do monday to friday :unamused:

Earlier this month the OP posted that he is on the same money he was 10 years ago… No wonder he is looking at job details on websites… :unamused:

My name is Donkey, and i work for Downton. …
I’m on a salaried, 4on-4off rota. I take home a little less a week ( but still more than £9ph) than when i tramped mon-fri, but I only work 4 or 3 days a week. Taking four days holiday sees me off for a fortnight.
If your weekends are special/important, this is not for you. If the weekend is just another day, see above.

I wouldn’t knock any driver for taking a job at any rate, but I will knock the employer for doing so. £9.00 an hour is pretty poor for driving an artic when I pay not far off that for van drivers and actually pay more on the weekends.

Ok, we get it. You are the industry leading employer of the year. And I bet your drivers only work 8 hours a day too.

Nope, always been very clear about the double manning and long hours, though sometimes yes, there are 8 hours. It’s difficult to quantify why I think 9.00ph is bad without relating it to personal knowledge, which was done to clarify that I wasn’t having a go earlier at any driver.

£9 p/hr …iirc green group is £8 p/hr

Most driving jobs in South Wales are around £8ph.

Exactly, I wouldn’t expect London wages here in Swansea, but then I wouldn’t expect the house prices, rents, C Tax, petrol or food costs of London either!
