Great pics and info , I never worked for them but remember them well.
I seem to remember when they packed in ,1980 ish ■■ It wasn’t bankrupt just voluntary closure, or am I rambling ?
Anyone got the facts ?
Jim

yup as far as i know Jim it was volutary! The story my old fella tells me is that Stan Yardley was knocking off his receptionist, Mrs Yardley wasnt too happy about this :unamused: So as the controlling business partner she put the financal squeeze on Stan! Which ended in voluntary liquidation and a lot of people out of work!!!I remember my dad coming home and telling us the news! Donald Yardley, Stans son, went onto working in the office at Sanmar! He had the permit books and a book of reload contacts thicker than the magna carter!!! He stayed there right upto them going bust too! Apparantly he still works as an agent and is possibly one of the most connected people in transport…

Hi a friend of mine worked for them late 70s Mick Earnshaw well built bloke with moustache,a very nice bloke and the Eric Richardson did he end up as a manager at magpie minerals of gommersals pop

Did Mick Earnshaw end up at Sanmar in the late 80’s early 90’s? Eric Richardson became an owner driver starting with an 8 legger maggi then eventually working his way upto a grey 6x4 foden pulling Toe trailers out of Newhaven and doing a bit for Sanmar too! When he retired he sold his farm near Harrogate and bought a small house in Ripon. Last time i saw him in Ripon he was still chewin on a pipe and wearing clogs!!!

Thanks Topbanana, I knew my memory was something like accurate. At the time I was working just down the road a mile for a plant hire firm driving a skip wagon and wanted to get on distance a mate told me to try Yardleys , that’s my luck with timing!
I knew a lad who drove for them in the 60’s nickname of Snowball cos of his blond hair, can’t remember his proper name.
The view in Canada will be a bit different from Meanwood I think !
Jim

Excellent bit off history there banana.

Remember the drivers parked in vauxhall receiving the news.

i remember me dad coming home and telling me! i was gutted cos i wanted to drive for them lol

When they packed in the workshop manager , cant remember his name came to work for Archbolds as workshop manager at the new garage in Morley ,He was a decent guy.

I think his name was Peter Jackson though im not sure

Workshop manager was called Trevor Jackson, from Ossett, I went to school with his son. He also popped into our yard at Ossett and assisted in setting some injectors on a S80 Foden with a ■■■■■■■■ 220. Yardley’s was my inspiration to become a HGV fitter, after been in their workshop once when My dad went to buy a 20ft skelly off them.
The big lad driver referred to earlier was Cliff Berry, he gave me and my uncle a lift from Sheffield in the Safari Foden once when our time ran out.
Trevor also worked for Mercedes at Bradford.
There was also a fiery yard man, whilst I was there once, Cliff returned to find entrance blocked with a car, yard man promptly shifted it with Forklift and not gently ! Cliff went to Sanmar too !

Here’s an oldy,It appeared on Trucknet many moons ago. I wouldn’t mind that number plate for the wife’s car, her birthday is on the 22nd of August.

I worked for Yardleys in the early 70s before moving to Wilsons Boroughbridge. We started international with day cabbed Fodens running groupage to Holland and bringing fruit back. We then started running to France hauling hanging beef from Browns of Belfast returning empty to Hook of Holland or Calais rail depots to load fruit back again. The first sleeper cab Foden was DUG497K and I ran to Fiats at Turin from Eaton Axles at Newton Aycliffe. I last saw Kenny Jackson on the Italian side of Mont Blanc when he was having trouble with customs when he was driving for Frozen Fare, 40 years ago!
Cliff Berry and I are still in touch although we’re both retired. Ronnie (cap) Parsons was night foreman. Original colours were blue cab with red chassis before going green and white. London depot was Fentiman Road and Vauxhall lorry park. More news when my memory returns. Tyke44

I used to back load from their Southampton office in the early sixties usually out of Ford’s at Swaithling the fleet colour then was a dark blue they had a couple of mk3 tin front AEC MM.8 wheelers, they always looked vary smart.Cheers Alec.

Yes I remember Yardley’s Transport. I worked for them for a while in the early 60’s. The company was owned by Stan Yardley. They were from Meanwood, Leeds but had depots at Liverpool, London and Southampton. I worked out of Southampton depot as a day shunter for the night trunkers from Leeds.
When I say day shunter that was not strictly true because on many occasions after working a full day shift, I would do a night shift change over at Rugby.
As for pics I have just erased some off my pc but I still have 1 or 2 and my son has some as well . I’ll see what I can do when I am finally master of this contraption!
