If you have and don’t fancy doing 35 hours DCPC- there is a short cut, DVSA has admitted that anyone with grandfather rights that sits mod 2 and 4 will get 5 years DCPC entitlement… it is a shame they didn’t mention this before most lads have paid out for the full 35 hours- full story in CM soon
It seems the DVSA have been sitting on this and didn’t actually inform anyone. I found out off this forum sometime in February - contacted DVSA and they didn’t know. Eventually I got an email confirming it. The official email was sent out by JAUPT to all DCPC providers last week.
Now we have tried putting people with acquired rights through Mod 2 & 4 it seems there isn’t a working booking system and the last attempt took almost 4 weeks to get the Mod 2 booked and then the guy failed. I am told the first time pass rate is around 43% but don’t know how true that is.
Problem is Mod 4 can’t be arranged until Mod 2 is passed and it seems the Mod 4 booking process is as long winded as the Mod 2. So far everyone I have spoken to has elected to go the 35 hours route rather than spend 4 - 6 weeks trying to get the Mod 2 & 4 sorted.
Apparently the online booking system will be modified ‘soon’ and will allow straight forward bookings for anyone with acquired rights to get their first DQC. That should make things a lot easier and obviously people will now come flooding into the haulage industry - or so the DVSA say
I can see this as a step towards compulsory regular testing.
I know one of the modules involves a “case study” what is this about? As I remember case studies from school, it was a made up story about a company that had a load of answers within the text, which you had to pick out in order to answer the questions.
Load of ■■■■■■■■ really but I suppose you weigh it up against a weeks worth of ■■■■■■■■.
But then is 2 and 4 a pass or fail test??

yes!! I know this as i had to do them when i passed my class 2
B…

Yes Nick, they are both pass/fail.
However, they are offered as an alternative to the 35hrs in some cases, so it just goes to prove that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Funny that. I phoned JAUPT today about this exact subject and got 3 different answers as to whether I have grandfather rights. Passed my test in 95 do I need to sit Mods 2 and 4. Do I still quailfy for them as I have my licence after medical revocation.
They were really struggling. Put me in touch with DSA. The joys.
I did my mod 2 and 4 PCV. Passed both first time with no real tuition. It’s common sense stuff.
The computer one is multiple choice and goes on about weights, regs, defects etc. The practical one was a walk around check telling the examiner what I was checking at each point followed by 4 questions like “show me how you would check your vehicle had no clandestines on board before reaching a border crossing” which involved a quick check of the luggage lockers and under the bus.
Not too sure why people fail it, unless they have been told nothing and haven’t got a clue about the machinery they are training to operate.

There have been a few recent changes such as this one
This refers only to those who have never had a DQC issued to them
which is the cheaper option?

About same

which is the cheaper option?
The cheaper option is what is known in the trade as the “Dessy option”. Basically you don’t do your DCPC at all, thus saving yourself hundreds of pounds. Drawbacks are you can no longer commercially drive, but upshots are you can spend much more time here pouring scorn and vitriol on drivers who are still working.

so it could cost more
But it can all be done in 1 day, or 2. (AM Case Studies - PM Practical Test)

With a bit of crafty booking yes it can and at far less cost than even a cheap five day periodic course - both money and time.
Not sure what happens if you fail the case studies - that’d mean missing the practical.

Given a job on monday. In the office, bloke walked in and looked at my licence, CPC card etc. Another guy came in to load me and give me the keys. Office girl joked “He’s got his CPC as well.” “You don’t need that do you?” laughter okay then…
Transpires that they’d got some some other bloke in to drive a van, but the pallets were too heavy. “Can you drive 7.5 tonner?” “Yeah mate of course yeah.” “Can I see your CPC card?”
But you gotta love the CPC, it means I get work! (Jumping puddles all day long but work’s work right?)
Who qualifies for grandfather rights? I thought it was a case of you must have it by September last year, no excuses!
so all it saves potentially is time, if it costs the same but you can fail who is going to want to do that ahead of sitting bored In a classroom for a week?
This new ruling is for anyone to get their FIRST driver qualification card who already had a C, C1 or CE prior to 09/09/2014. They haven’t been legally able to drive since then (yes there are some exceptions) but may want to start driving now - so they can do either training for 35 hours or Module 2 & 4.
It even counts for someone who has maybe done 2 or 3 days of periodic training already but never got it finished - now they can just take Module 2 & 4
