i know its not a driving link girl gets offered a days work trial at local coffe shop . txts owner 2 hours after she was meant to start i cant come in its raining and im wet.
poor work ethic? or a snowflake generation thing. wanting everything for nothing?
It’s not just the British, all nationalities have their share of people who will do as little as possible, content for others to do the work for them, this has increased due to easy credit and the welfare state with its armies of social engineering apparatchiks making excuses for their particular sect of the bone idle being, er, bone idle.
Luckily for those of us with a good work ethic, this means as we get older where at one time we might have been on the scrap heap at age 55 if we were made redundant, due to the lack of work ethic and things like maternity/paternity rights impacting heavily on especially small business costs, us older reliable workers (and there are plenty of older ones just as idle out there, this isn’t a new thing by any means) have never been more desirable in the work place.
The woman should have phoned in when she knew she was going to be late for the trial shift but on the whole I think she had a lucky escape not getting the job.
Who would want to work for such an obnoxious prat
I wouldn’t be surprised if their business takes a bit of a tumble when local people read that article.
The businessman went on to state that staff ‘cannot ever call in sick’ and that he would
dock wages from a previous shift if they did so without a doctor’s note.
He went on to champion one staff member who hadn’t had a day off in three years because that
was normal for ‘thin, healthy people who don’t eat bacon’.

Bloody bacon eating Brit! Interesting though at the end when they talk to his employees and customers and they all love him, so you know two sides to every story
What an absolute prat ,Deducts money from previous shifts for absenses. What is happening to the UK and workers rights
No Brit workers are fine ,He just wants cheap slave labour .

Mr Julian Preston Powers (name says it all btw ) sounds a pretentious, pompous (and as you say obnoxious) ■■■■ end, with the sort of face that hasn’t been punched enough.

There’s none left mate, they’ve either been taken away by knobs like him, or readily handed back by the spineless.
Just look at some of the posts on this forum on various threads.

He should get the Nobel prize for medicine: if we all stop eating bacon it will be normal to have no sickness in three years…
I’ve always believed that the best place to see a “strong work ethic” - is a workplace that has what we used to call “Open Docket” when I was at RM and in the Union there.
“Open Docket” was what was offered to the returning-to-work staff after a strike “To clear the backlog” which often required about two weeks of 24/7 working around the clock, including “ghosting” (double shifts) for the non-driving staff.
Offer people a bottomless overtime availability - and people WILL come and put in the hours!
If you “Salary” people on the other hand, - everyone and his dog will be rush rush rushing with a “job and knock” mentality all the time.
NOT good for H&S let alone “getting things done in time”…
I agree with the employer, no work no money, it encourages you to not go sick, unless you really are sick, to many softies now days think a cold entitles them to a week off with full pay, If employers kept having days off sick, there would be no companies to work for, it’s called a strong work ethic, which people in this country seem to have forgotten.

I think you may have misread what the supervisor said, he says “staff ‘cannot ever call in sick’ and that he would dock wages from a previous shift if they did so without a doctor’s note”, that’s not only draconian it’s illegal.

Seriously? with some of the Victorian style employers we have today? …especially in our game.
Ok, so it’s up to the employer now to make an educated decision whether or not in his opinion you are genuinely ill or not eh?
Ideal if you’re a Dr’s receptionist or something , but I don’t know about you mate, but I would not be letting my lot give me an examination of sorts to pontificate over whether or not I was genuinely ill.
Like I said, workers readily handing back rights which were fought for tooth and nail by our Grandfathers.

Would I want to be served in a cafe by someone with a streaming nose, hacking and coughing all over my sticky bun, because they were worried about getting their pay docked?
I think not.
Having a month off for a single sneeze isnt on, Id agree. Neither is being a germ spreading health hazard.
From the NHS site nhs.uk/common-health-questi … -fit-note/
“Seven days off sick or less
If you’re off work sick for seven days or less, your employer shouldn’t ask for medical evidence that you’ve been ill. Instead they can ask you to confirm that you’ve been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. This is called self-certification.”

i’m on long term sick at present first time absent for 7 years, and don’t know yet if i’ll be fit to drive again…and i’m desperate to get back to work!
Not making excuses as there is good and bad in all things, but a lot of people have been exploited with zero hours contracts etc and by the time they find a decent job they have completely lost all interest.
I agree with cafe owner if you can’t be bothered to turn up on time for a trial. Then tough luck. But there’s no need for the language and what he said.
I’ve been to many places especially near break time. We’re on our diner 1200-1300 and it’s like 11 50 come back later. Johnny English goes hiding pulls a face about offloading 2 /3 plts as almost his break time.
Yet the Europeans so rush out offloaded me and be done just in time for there break
Same as places we close at 18.00 arrive 17.30 no chance where allowed 20 mins washing up getting ready to go home time. To late
I can see your view, but some might think that we are just jealous that they have decent working terms and conditions that we don’t have. Also they might be on just as low wage low interest job as us, we are not the only ones hard done by.

Is there anyone on here who still gets full sick pay from day one - without being threatened with the sack?
its a fallacy to think its only us brits with the bad work ethic. the foreigners turn in yes but then if nobodys looking are rifling thru stuff or passing it over a fence . now im on the subject have any of you come across a Luis Paredes out of Felixstowe?, i heard hes back on the trucks after a spell taxiing. if hes now driving for your mob dont let him take you down as an accessory . just keep your eyes open
