Digi card left in overnight

i was in one of maritimes offices tother day and one of the posters on the wall said drivers would be fined 420pound if the cards left in overnight.now on the continent the police like you to leave the card in.what happened to european harmonisation,if this is the case how many drivers from mainland europe are unwittingley being fined.

Next time you are in there tell the poster it is an idiot. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

There is no fine for leaving the card in overnight.

See THIS THREAD where our resident VOSA expert had this to say on the subject of leaving digi cards in overnight.

geebee45:
Nothing wrong in leaving your driver card in the tacho provided that no-body else is going to use the vehicle, that the correct mode is being recorded and the ‘end country’ has been entered correctly.

If it is charts they are referring to then again no problem, provided the chart isn’t in for more than 24 hours and the trace gets overwritten.

I think you’ll find theres a little bit left out in the translation here. Leaving the card in is fine. Leaving the card in when you finish and starting again after your rest period without entering your finish and start locations is probably what will get you in trouble. They assume you won’t understand this, or maybe they don’t understand it so they tell you to remove it
Never mind being fined, you could, potentially be parked up for it !!!

i take it to put your start and finish you have to do a printout everyday.is that right.theres no mentoin of this on the poster chaps

No, you do it by way of the menu. You enter the menu and scroll to Entry Driver 1. There you will find options for Begin Country and End country. You select the appropriate one and then enter the country by means of it’s 1, 2 or 3 letter code. For Spain after entering the country you also have to enter the region. When you are done you press OK to store the entry.

I’m guessing here but maybe they are telling drivers to eject there cards so they will enter the end country as they may not have been doing this when leaving the card in, which is an infringement even if you only ever drive in one country, such as the UK.

Instead of putting up posters which say ■■■■■■■■ would they not be better teaching the drivers how to do it properly?

Surely leaving a didgi card in over night will just record your daily rest, I cant see the problem.

It will do if you change the mode to rest and you’re right it is neither a problem or an offence, provided you make the entries for begin and end country, even when they are the same.

ah right cheers neil, ive not got a digi card truck but i thought id ask the question anyway, and you never know it might help someone out that has a digitacho and hasnt been doing what you describe

coffee holic, i dont think it,s a problem in this country due to the abbility to speak the language, explaining to mister vosa and showing him your work sheet would cause no problem. now over the water with mr jamdamier or mister guardia most unsivil would be a problem.

You will find it more of a problem if you take it out over the water. Neither option is an offence but they do prefer to see it left in over there and it makes sense as it keeps it safe and less likely to lose it if the cab is broken into.

If you tramp for Eddie Stobard you leave your card in ALL WEEK according to the trainers at crick.

I always remove mine, mainly because it helps me to remember to put in the country of end of duty, and start. But also, if i’ve parked in a lorry park and at some point need to move a yard or two then it doesn’t show on my tacho card. I do realise that it will show on the VU, but i will not have to explain the movement to the tacho analyser which i reckon is more difficult than explaining it to a VOSA examiner bod.

Remember to hide that dutch one you have if vosa pulls you

Is it an offence to leave your card in and not put in a manual entry of a start/finish? I just leave mine in x hours when on rest and when ready for the off just change it to other work, never bothered about start/finish country unless when removing thecard.

Yes, it’s an offence.

never used a card but as many did i always used to run on break with a chart mainly so i didn’t forget to record my breaks (some agreed with this others thought it a terrible crime) have you got this option with a card i.e if on break will it automatically record your driving?

Yes, driving is recorded automatically by the digi tacho. Just like most analogue there is no mode you can select for driving.

Every one of those would be an offence. If you got nicked for a couple of transgressions they could throw all of those into the mix as well so instead of being done for a couple of offences you could be up to a couple of hundred.

When you reinsert your digicard, do a manual entry to cover the period when your card was not in the tacho.
The way to do this varies slightly depending on the make of tacho.

Here in Germany, the police are not really bothered with the “Letter of Attestation” for weekly rest (as opposed to the French who will skin you alive if you don’t have one) but are now keen to see that a manual entry has been made onto the digicard to cover overnight/weekend removal of the digicard from the tacho.
