As from Feb 2014 will be MOT failure if you’ve had the hammer & spanners out.
I’ve read on several forums where DPF’s have been removed either by owners or by
garages.
Looks like there’s going to be some very annoyed folk out there!
Oh well put some aftermarket heatshield on. I thought it was only a matter of time before they cracked down on this.
If you had a fleet you could just swap it in for the test. Although it will probably be one of those things that after the initial crackdown it gets forgotten about.
we used to have MOT cats from Volvo and std cats to run with

Only if the filter has been physically removed and replaced by a straight through pipe, they cannot remove the filter housing to see if the guts have been removed.
And a diesel will pass the smoke test without the guts in the filter!
And that’s from experience, and info off an MOT examiner.

Seem to think the smoke test itself is being dropped. Although I think they were saying they may read info electronically from the truck or bring in new technology to test actual particulate levels.
so if particulate levels are to be tested will this spell the end of the ad blue removal?
Uh Oh! I work in the motor trade and am seeing more than a few problems developing with these DPF’s, and heard of people removing/bypassing them. The clogging is happening on many cars that don’t seem to be used for long/fast journeys. In particular ambulance/police and taxi’s because of high idling time!! So glad I own a pre-DPF diesel car, especially since it had low use & short journeys when I got it (although would have appreciated the reduction in tax!!)!!

AD - BLUE has nothing to do with particulates ,AD-BLUE reduces Nitros Oxides…
Future Euro legislation will probably look at particulates ,as the NOX emitted now is so low it can’t be reduced any more
Norb as you will be aware many hauliers now have the ad blue turned off, just wondered if this will be detected on test any time soon?

Found his CM article in it they’re saying detecting NOx and particulates with some handheld device. Sounds a bit like TV detector van type bluster though and they possibly haven’t really got any system that would reliably work anywhere near sorted yet.

The answer to that is to turn it back on for test.
The problem is due to the nature of ad blue if it’s been turned off for any length of time the chances of it working right when turned back on are slim, not that it will be a problem to me running a euro 3 fh and a foden 4000
As a little experiment, spill a little bit of ad blue into an ash tray and leave it for a day or so. It goes hard and plasticky so would sure block up if not used

I haven’t got a clue if my old runabout Ford Fusion diesel has a DPF filter fitted or not. It’s a 2003 model, will it have one or what ?
Cheers.
I’d just like to say thanks to Silver Surfer for bringing this matter up. I bought a diesel car in September, which the following day developed problems with running. The garage I bought it from were good in that they spent a fair bit of time trying to resolve, but in the end had the DPF filter removed. It solved the problem. However I was not aware that they had done it until the gave me the car back, so it was done without my say so. I did at the time look at internet about it and saw it was a but of a grey area legally. However now with this news I have a car which due to their modifications will never pass its test again, and is in fact according to the press release, being driven illegally. I have written to the garage asking them to resolve by putting in a new filter (should be an interesting response). The other thought that springs to mind is if you are buying a 2nd hand car, how do you check if the filter is present or has been removed? Unless of course you insist on a brand new MOT.
It’s a veritable mine field!

Doesn’t work for car decats. The MOT examiner has to check for the EU approval stamp on them so even none approved ones fail.

That’s hopes and dreams from those who’ve bypassed them. People saying its all bluster are trying to convince themselves. Sensors are massively smaller than they used to be. You can get a breath alcohol analyser that clips onto your iPhone and adds barely an inch to the length.
It would be well within the realms of current technology to build a handheld NOx and particulate analyser.
all down to what the mot tester is like
so many companys by pass or remove the DPF system we had Cat covers put on the Vans an coach to stop people nicking them you cant see them
