Diesel engine runaway

Offt!

turbo seals blown letting oil into the inlet manifold, the only way to stop it is to stall the engine turning the key off won’t help, it will stop in the end when it fires a conrod out the side of the engine

Or hoy a coat over the air intake, if the cabs up wrestling with an intercooler pipe works if you’re brave enough.

Last place I worked this happened in the yard, driver put it into gear to try and stall it, just shredded the clutch and flywheel, which shattered and smashed the bellhousing! It blew the engine anyway.
So on top of the engine, there was a bellhousing, flywheel and clutch to pay for as well :frowning:

You also could cut the Pipe from tank

It’s not running on diesel. It’s running on engine oil.

co2 into the air intake will work if you have a good size fire extinguisher handy!

Stalling the engine doesn’t always work, I saw one that just kept running and destroying the clutch in the process, best advice if you ever do see it is to run away! Hard hat and hi viz will not save you from a conrod approaching you like a bullet!

Aye and the cab floor won’t stop bits of shrapnel embedding themselves in your bracket if you’re in the cab - you definately don’t want that to happen - get out of the cab and get away from it!

I’ve actually seen this happen first hand and there is nothing you can do once and engine starts to eat its own oil :open_mouth:

Mind you when it does stop its pretty disappointing as there is no huge explosion

Just mechanical pain :open_mouth:

Nothing you can do except, stall it out (if you catch it early enough), block the air intake, blast the air intake with Co2, choke an intercooler pipe, did you read any of the above ■■?

Makes you think while you’re cruising along at 56, what’s going on under your arse (what if??)!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Years ago I did witness an old mechanic (that’s when they fixed things) having a problem removing an injector from a Bedford KM, pipe off nuts removed and even though he had used a bar/hammer/threatening words and behavior the injector would not budge, he cranked the engine over and said injector disappeared up through the roof of the cab (yes the steel one) and exited the workshop via the roof never to be seen again. Scared the sh*t out of me as a young trainee whilst said mechanic simply lit his pipe and said “bugger - he’ll have to buy a new one now won’t he”?

Ha ha, we still do things that way, using compression to pop them out. The trick is to leave the pipe connected. Yes, it will knack the pipe, but a new pipe is cheaper than a new injector.

This old guy must be long gone now, he was one of the old school who could put his hand on a Gardner engine while it was running and tell you what was wrong with it, he would say stuff like - ee got a bit o ■■■■■■ slap on numma 3 or - ers takken a thou offn them berrins.

This is making me feel too old now

A Gardner enthusiast will be along shortly to point out that you cannot tell if one is running merely by placing your hand on it - it’s that smooth.

I dont have a sound card but have watched the vid
and I cant believe some of the above replies hear
it is hard to see from the video coz it is dark but it looks like black smoke not blue
why everyone thinks its engine oil I dont know
