My son passed his C+E in July, a month before his 19th birthday. Within two weeks he was double manned with “one of the old boys” at a well known Norfolk haulage company in a red DAF CF artic. Two weeks later he’s tramping on his own. Happy days…
Did all my lessons and tests on Saturdays and during day when on back shift in a sawmill. Passed test on Thursday morning, did some phoning around while on back shift, using numbers I’d collected off wagons I’d seen in and out of the mill.
Two companies said to come and have a chat on the Saturday. Can’t remember the first, but it was from Ayrshire the other was in Carlisle. Decided to try Carlisle…after 5 minutes was told that’s your wagon, how much notice do you need to give?
Quick phone call later, I cashed my holidays in and started with P.Hinchcliffe on the Monday morning.
Bloody sharp learning curve, tramping on tippers when your pay depends on kms and load/tip bonus! Fair play I was sent out with another driver for a few days to learn the basics.
Biggest help was all drivers and office staff used the same (Phillips navigator) map, so any directions were easily shared. Bloody good, but hard job.
Passed my Class 2, didn’t do any driving, was only interested in Artics so went straight up to Class 1 & passed, had interview within a week, brief formal chat & assessment drive - offered the job there and then - driving 5 nights a week, started the following monday.
Passed my class 2, got a job within a week, the obligatory multi-drop, didn`t stick it long, got a job driving an eight leg bulk tanker, they put me through my class1.

Bonjour,
Driving on the Continent just does not appeal to me.
I just don’t want to put up with that extra “foreign stress.”
