Is it me !! , I used to think driving a truck was the best job in the world , I started driving at eighteen years old , at the time you could go straight for the class one and I worked for a small family firm who gave young lads a shot at artic driving . It was before mobile phones as such but everyone knew where each other was that night , so we would meet up n have more than a few beers , now a days your lucky if you see a local in pub and usually are talking to yourself. Most of the places we used to frequent are knackered now , there was a time when I wanted to be away 5 nights a week , now 1 is too many and I don’t think I get any more money now than twenty years ago , correct me if I’m wrong , the good times are long gone .

The politicians have nearly achieved their goal of ‘Divide and Conquer’
We are mere pale imitations of the Nation we once were
Everything has been split, not just the people!..We are now encouraged to ‘grass’ each other up at every opportunity, therefore the common trust has gone, along with many other qualities vital to leading a fulfilling, quality life

You started driving aged eighteen so you can’t have that much experience doing much else. As someone who has done a variety of different jobs before driving for a living, I can confirm it’s still the best job in the world. Times change. Show me any industry that is the same today as it was thirty years ago and I’ll eat my face.

If you ate your own face it may be seen as an improvement

+1, think it helps to be on for a good firm though. My only gripe is speed cameras!

No well.I dont know NZ,but you have to take in Account that you dont need Lorry Drivers today as they were 20 Years ago.
Lorry are full with Gadget doing the Job for Drivers,If you dont feel well with the Work which needs be done just say “Its against Health&Safety” or “I’m not trained”
On the other Hand more and more Manager and Office Staff from the Uni who have no Glue about Transport Industry and dont need experienced Drivers who laugh stupid if they give a Order you can’t fulfill, during a un-experienced Driver would try to do the Job and is the one who gets charged if it fails.
With that short on Experience they can pay less and give more to the higher Educated Staff. You like it or dont. But send a CV with all your knowledge and you wouldnt find Work if you dont know one who helps you.But if you ask as un-experienced with 2 Year driving History you get chosen.
■■■■ me! That’s legible!!!
just thought of another:::::…Piano tuning
it’s not much of a list though only 3 between us, must try harder
Believe me sheep farming has changed a hell of a lot more than driving, even on the hills, used to be 1 herd to 500 ewes now its more like 2,000, new diseases, regs (even more pointless and badly thoughtout than DCPC) etc every bloody year
Driving is a piece of ■■■■, even if trunking can be mind numbingly boring. At least trucks aren’t born with an inbuilt ambition to die in the most imaginative, costly and inconvenient manner possible
I have done a varity of jobs i have worked in a office i have done car spraying and done abit of mechanics as well as working in IT repairing computers and I’m only 27. I have to say lorry driving is the easiest so far although the IT work was fairly easy and laid back.
One job I would imagine is easy would be a farm worker ploughing fields all day or cutting hedges ? or maybe even a landscaper sitting on a lawn mower all day cutting grass and trimming hedges ? Correct me if I’m wrong though

You’re sure about that?
Hmm - 1980 then:
I imagine a lot of jobs in the catering industry are pretty much the same - waitress, McD’s burger flipper etc.

NOPE!! A lot of changes in instrument design and manufacture - only strings (violin, viola, cello + double bass) stay the same and that’s because a lot of the instruments in use are hundreds of years old.
try again… car manufacturing!!! that is still the same, still built by robots and sometimes humans…in fact I bet you would struggle to see much difference with a car from the 80’s to one now. Apart from the electronic stuff they put on that you don’t really need.
I’m still not convinced enough to eat my face. No industry is the same today as it was thirty years ago. It doesn’t matter if you’re a tinker, tailor, soldier or spy; health & safety laws, modern technology, human rights, the list of things that have brought changes in the last thirty years goes on. The world changes, jobs change, you have to change with it or you get left behind like the OP, crying into a pint while reminiscing about the olden days when everything was so brilliant. If you don’t like the best job in the world anymore, move over and give someone who appreciates it a chance.
