from worse to bad:
Is it me !! , I used to think driving a truck was the best job in the world , I started driving at eighteen years old , at the time you could go straight for the class one and I worked for a small family firm who gave young lads a shot at artic driving . It was before mobile phones as such but everyone knew where each other was that night , so we would meet up n have more than a few beers , now a days your lucky if you see a local in pub and usually are talking to yourself. Most of the places we used to frequent are knackered now , there was a time when I wanted to be away 5 nights a week , now 1 is too many and I don’t think I get any more money now than twenty years ago , correct me if I’m wrong , the good times are long gone .
The politicians have nearly achieved their goal of ‘Divide and Conquer’
We are mere pale imitations of the Nation we once were
Everything has been split, not just the people!..We are now encouraged to ‘grass’ each other up at every opportunity, therefore the common trust has gone, along with many other qualities vital to leading a fulfilling, quality life
Couldn’t agree more with both these posts.
On the subject of grassing, why the piggin hell to blokes do it?, pat on the head from the gaffer or what?
One of my oppo’s dropped a clanger couple of weeks ago, and i managed to sort it out so no damage was done…thats what working mates do for each other…he phoned me up and begged me not to say anything, i was insulted a little that he should imagine for one moment that i would, but then we have our fair share of spies just like anywhere.
I told him my number one motto…‘‘management should be on a need to know basis, and what they need to know is as little as possible’’…also assured him that the situation was between him and me only.
About 25 years ago we had a driver that was the company grass, he ended up known as Tacho…the spy in the cab.
Old fashioned companies do exist, i work for one and am grateful, rare breed just like old school drivers.
chicane:
At least trucks aren’t born with an inbuilt ambition to die in the most imaginative, costly and inconvenient manner possible
You’re sure about that?
good point well made, life has a way of ramming your words down your throat
My humble apologies to anyone inconvenienced by a FedEx wagon stranded in the left-hand lane of the M6 southbound J34 around 15.30 yesterday. Merc Axor decided to deprive me of any gears just as I aproached the tailback from the 2 car prang, was left stranded while I figured what to do, (turn everything off give it a minute and hope the computer reboots). ARGH!!!
You will all be happy to know that the load of Mother’s day packs of chocs and flowers made it to their destination, stuff Stobarts its Chicane that saves the world

No well.I dont know NZ,but you have to take in Account that you dont need Lorry Drivers today as they were 20 Years ago.
Lorry are full with Gadget doing the Job for Drivers,If you dont feel well with the Work which needs be done just say “Its against Health&Safety” or “I’m not trained”
On the other Hand more and more Manager and Office Staff from the Uni who have no Glue about Transport Industry and dont need experienced Drivers who laugh stupid if they give a Order you can’t fulfill, during a un-experienced Driver would try to do the Job and is the one who gets charged if it fails.
With that short on Experience they can pay less and give more to the higher Educated Staff. You like it or dont. But send a CV with all your knowledge and you wouldnt find Work if you dont know one who helps you.But if you ask as un-experienced with 2 Year driving History you get chosen.

you even had the ‘breakdown’ to ensure the ‘oh disaster will happen if it’s 3 seconds late’ section for the show

You started driving aged eighteen so you can’t have that much experience doing much else. As someone who has done a variety of different jobs before driving for a living, I can confirm it’s still the best job in the world. Times change. Show me any industry that is the same today as it was thirty years ago and I’ll eat my face.
Sheep farming?
and
Musical instrument manufacturing…
NOPE!! A lot of changes in instrument design and manufacture - only strings (violin, viola, cello + double bass) stay the same and that’s because a lot of the instruments in use are hundreds of years old.
What a load of utter nonsense…I know a lot of musicians and not one of them has an instrument hundreds of years old…
you’ll be telling me next you’ve got a saxophone made for Beethoven…
Most instruments are still manufactured using the same methods they have used for many years. The exception being electronic instruments.
Most instruments in use are not hundreds of years old…the design is yes, and the process to make them is often very similar…and that was my point…
In you were to look at a recorder or flute made in the 1800’s you would recognise it today for being the same thing…it would look very similar to a modern instrument…how is that ‘a lot of changes’■■?
Every job I have ever worked, including being in the Navy, working as a tree surgeon, folding and delivering for a London laundry, and slaving away at a horse feed merchants, and assorted other truck driving type jobs, has been full of people telling me how terrible everything is now and how I “should have been here 10 years ago, then it was a proper job”.
It gets so old. So fast.
It isn’t ten years ago. Nothing will take the wind out of your sails faster than being surrounded by a depressed workforce who are lamenting the trade winds of yesteryear, when trucks were wood, sheets were roped, and men were steel.
There is only one day you can have any impact on in life, and that is today. So stop fretting about yesterday, or worrying about tomorrow. Know and accept that you cannot really make an impact on anything but the current moment you are living in. It seems so simple, to type it out like that.
It would be nice to meet some of the new breed who can actually find the positive in the current situation. Our own tame lorry driver switchlogic, is about the only positive person I could name off hand who seems to find the good in an otherwise considered crappy vocation.
