Dean's C+E Diary - Peter Smythe Training

Peter Smythe:
There’s a lesson here for everyone considering training and test. No-one is exempt from nerves and the outcome is not good. Here we have two candidates who, IMHO, were both looking at a comfortable pass. But, on the day, it didn’t happen. If they are gutted, I’m doubly gutted. I hate to see so much work and effort go down the drip because of nerves. But the important thing is to put it behind you and go again. Put it down to experience or whatever - just try not to do the same again!!

I’m so pleased that the posts on here have been so supportive. Let’s hope for a better outcome on 22nd. All the best, Pete

Ignoring the fact that you’re training people to drive artics in what is basically a 7.5 tonner with a trailer  … I do agree with your points above. I remember when I did my class 1 donkeys years ago and my trainer said I’d ■■■■ it on the test, but an unfortunate predicament merging with the M62 at Lofthouse where I had nowhere to go at the end of the slip road resulted in a ‘serious’ and the rest is history. Nerves weren’t a problem for me as I’m naturally fairly confident once I’ve grasped the basics, but they do say all the best drivers pass on their second go anyway :stuck_out_tongue: . No idea who “they” are though.

Kirk Ella 71:
Yes that can be true but for me if I think I have failed I then tend to relax a bit more as the nerves go if that makes sense so if I failed reverse I would still want to go out on which ever course there was not a simplified one although I know not all are like that

But if you fail your test on the reverse at Newcastle there is properly no chance of you going out on the road as you then cant do the controlled stop as this is the way they have the centre set

Good luck to both for next time hope the nerves dont get the better of you

They don’t do the controlled stop now they replaced it with independent drive assessment where you either follow road signs to a certain destination or follow a route as told to you in advance ie right at next roundabout right at next roundabout then left at next junction to see you can follow simple directions
[/quote]
they don’t do control stops no more

Well I’m all geared up for my second attempt and hoping for the pass result this time.

Just gotta remember an hours good drive with as few errors as I can manage and then I will be up there with the better drivers who pass second time… eh Rob?

Good luck for tomorrow dar1976, hope all goes well for you, will look out for your result

All mate the best

All the best for tommorrow. Hoping you pass. Will be checking for updates.

Yes best of luck to you

I am reeling with anger at myself for not passing again. A good reverse. In first time with no shunts. A great drive. Only 7 minors. We got back to the yard for the coupling exercise and the pins just would not engage. Had 4 goes at it. Just needed to lift the drawbar one turn and it went in first time. Didn’t compute in my brain that I could adjust the leg once it was uncoupled.

Seriously considering knocking it on the head as I am out of money and don’t know if I will ever get it right.

Hope that atomic gets result today as he has his test there today too.

Gone to slit my wrists.

Sorry you had a bad result today dar1976 im really gutted for you :frowning:

Thanks for all the encouragement from you all.

Thanks to Peter for putting up with me. His training has been outstanding.

Just wish I had the confidence in myself to pass this.

Just so gutted right now. Don’t know what’s best to do. Flogging a dead horse is coming to mind.

Sorry to hear you didn’t pass. You’ve come this far, it would be silly to give up now. Whenever you can, just keep trying. You’ll nail it next time for sure. :sunglasses:

Sorry to hear things went ■■■■ up again, but the money and time you have put towards it are only a waste if you give up before you pass. Just keep at it, after all you have the Guaranteed Pass Scheme so money shouldnt be an issue surely??

Anyways best of luck and i understand you must be feeling crap but you clearly have it in you to pass just keep at it.

All the best Phil

Extra training and use of vehicle for test is free but retest fees of £150 are still incurred and of course it is approx 100 quid return trip in fuel or on train. Plus 30 quid for b&b.

I see your point that it is a waste to give up now but the expense of retrying each time is killing me at the moment. I have 5 kids at home and I would not want them to suffer.

Don’t get me wrong I want to keep going till I pass but can’t see any way round it right now

Ah right far from ideal. Of course on the other side of things with the CE license you should be able to earn more in the long run. But you will just have to see what you can sort, hopefully things will work out. Can you take a break and go back to it when you have the money as part of the guaranteed pass scheme?

Again all the best Phil

Mate im sorry to here you did not quite make it this time and i fully understand the monies situation its not easy. I would say sleep on it tonight and see how you feel in a few days, dont make any snap decisions it may be different tomorrow :exclamation:

Just one of those things I guess.

Glad to see you passed

I’m as gutted as you Dean. You know you can do this and you’ve shown it’s well within your grasp. I can’t do anything about the travel/b+b costs but I am willing to defer the test fee if that helps.
Just like you, I want the result. You have my mobile - give me a call for a chat and let’s get it sorted.
Pete

Glad you passed

Dean dont give up yet just take some time out go back & rethink for a few days ( I know I have as I have said did fail my CE but will be gong back to do it in the near future have had to take a bit longer than would like but that is due to money & a few other things I needed to sort out 1st )

But dont give up yet

Gutted for you mate

Hope you have had a word with Peter and able to sort something out it would be a real shame as sounds as if you should pass next time ,

fingers crossed you can work this out and get that pass

Jen x

Peter i`d just like to say that I think you go above and beond when it come to caring about your students and the training , your a rare man :sunglasses:
