DCPC: Jackanory Driver

We’ve all experienced one, the sort who has to discuss every point made whether it’s rubbish or not, or has an experience to relate to the group when you’re trying to sleep.
How do you cope with them? Make snoring noises, start your own conversation, yawn loudly etc?
Perhaps you are a Jackanory Driver? Why do we need to hear about your totally made up life on the moon with Fly By Nite etc?

You’ve got to do something for 7 hours… might as well fill it with something!

I am of course a massively long in the tooth Class 1(million) license holder who has driven to the moon and back on only a Gardner 180, and have experience with ultra heavy haulage (the stuff so big, you didn’t even know it existed). So you all would benefit from listening to me. A bit.

At least that’s who I am on a Dcpc course anyway…

I like to bring up 2 things on CPC courses and they’re guaranteed to cause a row.

1 - 15 mins only after 6 hours. Pulled this on my last one and the whole class including numpty trainer ganged upon me. Great fun.

2 - Driving a non tacho company vehicle home after running out of driving time but still having duty time left. This one really winds them up.

Now I just let them agree with things like that. I know it’s right but ■■■■■■■■ to them I just get up and make myself a coffee, go for ■■■■■, have a crafty sleep etc.

Well that’s wrong for starters think about what you have said :unamused:

By the time that you would of driven 6hrs you would of already had a 15min break unless you like working for nothing,(DVSA fines) as for WTD many don’t observe that waste of space ruling

I have said that a 15 minute WTD break is required after 6 hours. Start at 1pm, need 15 minutes by 7pm.

They all claimed 30 minutes. Are you claiming the same ?

No, you need the break before exceeding 6 hours so as long as you don’t exceed 6 hours the break can come after.

Jackanory driver? no… more like Jackanory Trainers that haven’t got a clue what a lorry is

Its amazing how many of our drivers used to work at brian yeardleys doing the continent being away for months at a time,he must have had 1000,s of lorrys at one bit way they talk, the strange thing is none of them know each other and when you ask them a question about going over the water they change the subject sharpish   :unamused:

is the usual cpc trainer bloke a bit of a numpty then? the guy who does/did all the cpc that our firm hired is also a driver himself and works haulage wen he’s not taking courses, never had any trouble getting on with the hours with him.

Good post, and so true, you get the Jackanory of the ex Middle East driver who navigated using the stars and ate camel stew for breakfast.
Then as said, the ex concert tour driver, who did the Madona and U2 world tour.
The ex Euro driver, who did Russia and some Turkey thrown in for good measure.
There is a Jackanory in every Dcpc course.
The next story, Richard Long, taking combines to Serbia, getting shot at, on the way.

Yeah this :grimacing:

Can only speak for ours but yes, they all have their own bs rules they come out with. One trots out the ad blue pigs ■■■■ story as well :unamused:

Haven’t been subjected to the landing leg fines yet though, still waiting for that. I copped for the Herald Of Free Enterprise and sleeping on planks across the engine in the same week recently though so I only need the landing leg story for a full set :grimacing:

Technically you need a tunnel fire, Channel or Mont Blanc, and an embassy siege or an exploding truckstop (Wally Stop) for the full house.

Terry T:

is this a new one? Only one i’ve heard is off a bloke at ours is you get fined by vosa something like 200 quid for each turn of the handle if the legs aren’t fully up when driving.

Yep thats the one. £60 seems to be the accepted figure. I guess inflation round your way is a killer :open_mouth:

And don’t forget if you give him some gob he puts the legs in high range

For the full set you also need the “you’ve got to be 6 feet away from steering wheel” and “if you’ve had a drink, don’t leave your keys in the ignition”
And as already stated, a Herald and/or a tunnel/Mont Blanc to be able to qualify for your pet of steak knives
