Day off after first day for another job interview

Hay al, got a hard really tricky situation here. I was offedred tempory contract a month ago to start work full time monday tomorrow ! min wage pay, long hours, diry grafting work. but most importly the job is only there till september. but the crew do seem a alrite bunch of people. Althought I have never worked for them before. Thay called me friday to confirm I would be starting monday. To which I gladly agreed as I have not been able to find anything els.

A couple hours after confirming with them I received an email to a job I had aplyed for ages ago. I never thought I would here from them so I had kind of forgot abou it. Thay are asking to attend an interviw tuseday !! its a big company with great pay, pension and benefits, great working hours, lots of scope for advancement, clean work and a most importanly a permiment position.

Only of course " IF " I get the job…? alot of people will be going for the job and the odds on getting it are really tought, but its a really great oppertunity to not aleast try for.

Trouble is how the hell do I explain this one to the other poeple I have agreed to start working for this week…? ither way its a major put out for them. I don’t want to mess them about I really don’t. But if I want to go for the interview I got to say to them on my first day I cant be in tomorrow as I got an interveiw with another company !!! :open_mouth:

I gess its a classic bird in the hand or bird in the bush situation. What would you do…? Anyones thoughts on this would be appreciated. this is doing my head in bit. Thanks all

You said it in your own words “temp contract” if the other job is permanent if your successful then the temp job comes second, got go with what`s best for you

Look after No.1 :bulb:
If the temp job is as crap as it sounds, who cares anyway if they feel messed about…they should pay decent wages.
The fact they are nice people is irrelevant, and if you ■■■■ up the interview go on the agency at a better rate than the crap job until something turns up.
You’re welcome. :sunglasses:

It’s a temp job, explain the situation if they can’t give you the day off don’t go back…
If you really want the opportunity of this job you must make that interview but try to be honest with the bosses in the temp job first they may understand they may not…

Go for the permanent job but if you have to fill in an application form I would suggest that you use a spell checker.

contact company two. Say Tuesday is inconvenient for you and arrange another date so you can give company one a few days notice of an essential day off.

Tell them your going for a interview if they really wanna keep you they gonna have to up your wages… Minimum wage is ridiculous anyway for hgv driver they are taking the ■■■■

Be a little honest with them stating that your working for someone else ATM and it would be improper to take the day off at short notice, and ask them if it’s possible to attend on the Saturday. This would show that your a consensus worker and good time keeper.

Failing that roll up in the truck of company 1, park it down the street put it on break, a quick change into smart clothes and attend the interview with company 2. Then after the interview continue on with the drops for company 1

If secure work with good pay is really what you are looking for (i.e. you don’t see your current arrangements as a permanent way of life), then conceive what you have instead as a turd in the hand versus a bird in the bush.

I would just be open with your temporary employer, and put it to them that you’ve been offered an interview for a permanent position with pay and conditions vastly superior to theirs, and will need the time off on Tuesday. The problem of cover is their problem, not yours - they are going to drop you at the end of September without any bother about how you continue to make ends meet (and it’s not as though you are being paid redundancy money or premium rates to make up for your bother in accepting temporary work).

I also wouldn’t look at it as a major put-out for them - they can’t seriously expect you to prioritise their inferior offer, you’re just the latest mug to turn up at their door. They prey on workers like yourself who are forced to accept temporary work when what you want and need is permanent work. If they don’t want people to leave to do better, secure work (or even pursue the chance of it), then they need to offer the same. They are the same crew who are probably undercutting other firms, big and small, who do offer secure work and reasonable pay.

And look at it this way, you may well be in exactly the same position come September - you will need to find permanent work, and the interview will conflict with your existing temporary employment. If they will release you then (before the end of your temporary contract) to search for permanent work, why won’t they release you now for the same reasons? And if they won’t release you, then you’re going to have exactly the same dilemma at the end of September as now - except you’ll have thrown away all your chances in the meantime, and you’ll have made it clear to your existing employers that they can offer insecure work to you and yet still receive security of service from you in return.

You have to find a a way of going to that interview, it ticks far more boxes in terms of employment over where you are about to start.

But if possible don’t burn your bridges with the other company, especially as you say you can’t find anything else.
Not sure if you’re a newly qualified driver? But if you are, a few month HGV driving experience will be better than another few months of waiting for a job to come up.

Personally I don’t like putting people out, but if they’re paying minimum wage for temporary work, they should be used to getting the dross who don’t give a [zb] and newbies who’ll be off as soon as a better offer comes along.

and the bloke that’s been there for ever and call himself senior or lead driver and thinks he’s part of the management.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Employees come and go endlessly, don’t worry about how a company feels, it doesn’t, just look after yoursekf

I’d come up with some excuse not to start the offered job till Wednesday.

The attitude you get back will tell you if you should bother going back Weds at all.

Above post is on the money.

He is actually quite wise for a clown.

A bit tricky as they are expecting you in the Morning…
Think I’d be speaking to the perm job on Monday (while at the temp job), requesting the possibility of a rearranged interview as you’re not the sort of person to let an employer down. If that doesn’t work bin off the temp job if the perm one is potentially a lot better and you think you have a shot at it. Best of luck!

You don’t mention if the temp work is direct or through an agency. If the latter, phone them, explain the situation, it’s then up to them to cover it.

If you’re directly employed, turn up Monday morning and tell them ASAP. If they really want you till September they’ll live with it, if not, at least you’ve been straight with them. It may well suit them to at least get you through any inductions etc. on the Monday so that you could skip Tuesday (is it possible to do part of a day, if it is at least offer) and come in ready to rock wednesday morning.

Above all you owe it to them to be honest. Job might be crap and temporary but at least they offered it to you.

We recently interviewed for a van/7.5 job, fairly urgent looking for a driver, and the preferred lad couldn’t start for 2.5 weeks, so we waited for him instead of taking on someone that could start then and there. If he ever leaves us, we know he’ll be fair with us and it tells us a lot about his general attitude anyway. So I’d try and schedule for a weekend interview.

It might be a carp job, but it’s a job and if you are a newbie, you’vs got a valuable 6 months experience.

min wage pay, long hours, dirty grafting work.

What is it with some of you lot :unamused: .
Why is everybody so intent on showing any respect to this outfit.
Crap job, crap work, crap conditions, for the reward of minimum wage :unamused:
No disrespect to o/p but maybe he was the only one… (fill in the blank)… enough to apply for it .
I reckon that they could not believe their luck that someone applied for it, so they offered him it.
As far as being nice people, they would have to do something at least to make it sound attractive.
I wouldn’t think twice about stuffing them, you only reap what you sow, and if nobody applied it would send out a message to them…stop cutting costs and PAY A PROPER RATE :bulb: as you can sure as hell bet that they are making a decent profit.
■■■■ em I say.

The thing is the OP said they couldn’t find anything else, I did wonder if this was because they were a newly qualified driver. So even a few month with this outfit might give him the experience to go elsewhere.
