Another one of Bakers hope it has not bin on before, cheers Buzzer.

Why the change away from being Scania and Volvo to purely Volvo?, was there ever a 4series on the fleet?.

High “NB12” we never got to having a 4 series scania on the fleet nothing against the mark except they were always at least ten grand dearer new than the volvo’s and when you are buying 12 new motors a year its not rocket science to work out why.Scania always said there motors were better on fuel and that may have bin the case 25 years ago but the volvo has vastly improved in this department in these later years and the dynafleet computer system that the volvo’s have is second to none,we can look on a screen and tell where any of our trucks are within 3 yards any where in europe without speaking to the driver, see if he is moving when he started which direction he’s going in,this is what customers want today which is an acurate update on there cargo.Dont get me wrong i loved the V8 scanias and we had very little trouble with them but although there dealer is a lot closer to our yard than volvos they are in my opinion over priced but if i was an OD with one motor it might be different, cheers Buzzer.

They were not really like for like though were they?, F12 400s and 143 450s, would the price not have been closer if you had been buying F16/FH16s?.

Never would buy an F16 definitely too juicy especially when driven by an employee with a heavy boot, cheers Buzzer.

Shame about the dustcart image on the frount of this fine scania,i would not alow this in our fleet at any cost, cheers Buzzer.

Buzzer I don’t think that we have ever met but I just wanted to say that that you must have made Davies one hell of a good place to work in order to have such a team of drivers and ex-drivers as there are on this thread. Nice one!

Many thanks David for your comments,i have always thought that you are only as good as the men that work for you, you dont have to ■■■■ up to them but should respect them for who they are and what they do for you.Of course you are not going to go through life without having one or two badduns but that is par for the course,we dont go as far as ESL in the clothing dept.but do give our drivers fleeces and polo shirts so they do look as they belong to some half decent outfit when they turn up to tip or load at customers premises. The other thing is they run legally today not like it was when i first started i have to admit, but they have really decent kit to work with, although in some cases we have given a driver a brand new truck and a month later it is like a ■■■■ tip,but Horry who is one of my sons now running the company just gets some one in to valet it and charges the driver for it.We spend alot on external cleaning of the fleet as we are a frigo company carrying mostley foodstuffs and this is good for the image and i think it makes the drivers feel good as well having a clean truck and trailer. As for past staff alot still keep in touch calling in for a cup of tea if passing nearby, but the old job is getting tougher than ever trying to compete with our european counter parts using cheap labour from countries like Romania etc who seem to be willing to work for far less than we pay, anyways i must stop my rambling and should write a book instead, cheerio for now Buzzer.

A picture of Southampton high street some years ago, cheers Buzzer.

It’s still recognisable though isn’t it? I’m guessing it’s looking from the bottom up to the churchy thing in the middle of the road.

Well you can’t take it with you and I’m sure everyone enjoyed listening to them at the time, lorries too quiet now. Was it always just Volvo/Scania or did any other marques ever make it onto the fleet?, any demonstrators that impressed?.
