I could have done that John and pretended I was still a real lorry driver. The only thing putting me off is having to get out of bed in the middle of the night and having to pee out of the door.(Not very hygenic) When I worked for MaggieD he issued us all with one gallon plastic bottles and only charged us a pound.Generous to a fault.Regards Charlie

I sacked a driver once for leaving a full bottle in the cab when he was gone home for the weekend in the height of the summer heat, not very nice for the relief driver to have to deal with, cheers Buzzer. PS.thats what Richard used to sell to unsuspecting punters as best French Calvados, but they soon got peeded of with that.

Hi

Charlie I think you still owe me a pound for the last bottle !

John, The Calvados sales went really well, basically in Charlie & GazIOW’s case it was the start of recycling as we know it today, in one end out the other, my agent in Le Havre Hugh Rine made a fortune selling to Chantelle in the ā€œFerry Boatā€ :unamused:

By the way many thanks for offering to clean my fathers camper’s roof,as soon as we can clear the snow in Alton he’ll be down

Thanks also to Andrew for the pics,Angie says she wishes she’d had motors like that to drive when she was doing Italy,(whilst I was asleep in the passenger seat)

Regards
Richard

Hi Richard that was a surprise as i had no idea Charlie was your dad he kept that quiet,Angie is right about the trucks but Andrew does a good job of keeping us informed of how it is today on the european scene.By the way do you know if Chantelle is still about as i have not been to France since 1988 which is a hell of a long time ago, cheers Buzzer.

Now heres a truck that came to Eastleigh after its first five years with D.J.Light. of Holcolm nr Bath. It was bought by my mate Derek Miller and gave some good service for him.

Hi Saviem, when my mate derick went to look at that 88 it was on a saturday D.J was not about in the yard and got directed to Mr Lights bungalow and there he was in the garage tikering with a vintage bike,he said to my mate are you interested in preservation and my mate said he liked to see it so D.J said stand on this plate ( in the garage floor ) and down they went to an under ground room full of oldbikes and relative memorobilia about 30 of them and three makes only ones of there kind left,he also said he could not get them insured underground.Back to the yard and a deal was struck for the 88 and my mate noticed an international tractor unit in the corner and D.J. said he was on holiday in the USA and could not resist it so bought it there and then and had it shipped home.He also bought a Dodge bereiros new and reckoned it to be very good, high praise for a man who ran Scania’s and Volvo’s.Any way how you doing in this snow,i bet your selling hay hand over fist, i dont like it but we cant control the weather, cheers for now Buzzer

Evening Buzzer, first the ground is saturated, then it freezes, now this b… lot, heaven knows what it will be like in a month.

I hope you have all your hay under lock and key! The price here is shooting up! Supply and demand. I try to stay at the same price, and look after my ā€œregularsā€. That way when there are loads about, I still keep them. Funny, this year I was going to increase the acreage for hay, as the yeild 2012 was poor. Still I will always keep enough my my ā€œold ladā€, but last year I lost my little Conymara girl, …but she was 42!! But d`ont you get to love them!! Left a very big hole in my daily life.

I envy you your skill in driving, something Ive always fancied, but never had the time to try. In our village there is a chap who drives a four in hand, with a nice variety of carriages, comes up our lane regularly, complete with the ā€œcarriage dogsā€ at heel. Quite a spectacle, and some cracking horses. Maybe if I ever retire its something I might try, but I suspect it would be addictive!

Yes I rode down on that plate at Jacks Bungalow quite a few times, what an Aladdins cave. My particular favourite was, and is Wolverhamptons Sunbeam, and didnt he know a lot about them! Lots of those Mendip Hauliers were nice lads, and liked their bikes!!

You know I just can`t get used to seeing ā€œmodernā€ lorries, like the F12 on gazzers post, being regarded as ā€œclassicā€. Must be a sign that Im well past my sell by date, my pal still uses his F12 ā€œflat topā€, on a low loader, and we both think its modern!! Old age eh!

Cheerio for now.

Heres a picture of an early Robert Armstrong volvo F88 they ended up with a depot in Totton, used to pull for them on traction and used to enjoy doing France, two a week one round Macon and the one from Bordeax the boring bit in the end was all the ferry crossings, cheers Buzzer.

CX00423.jpg

I passed one of yours parked up in the long/abnormal load bay at South Mimms last week

High Kindle530 not sure about the long bit but abnormal might be a fair description of the driver, cheers for that Buzzer.PS you wuzzent drivin when you took that snap wuz you mate.

A pic of one of Radclive’s F88 with a new one in the background not yet sign written, one of our present drivers worked for them for some time in earlier years.cheers Buzzer.
