Davies Int. Southampton. With photos (Part 1)

Evening all was on a boat last week with uncle dodge was nice to catch up over breakfast & he made the tea as well lol

Yesterday was a full service time for my little articulated Avant loader, all oils and filters and a good Greece up was the order of the day, just pays to look after your gear as it is expensive to replace and if you don’t it lets you down when you least want it to.
Today we gave the old Scania a run down to Frome market as it was the first of two Candlemas sales, loads of artics from up North waiting to load and head home with the stock on offer, they were all to expensive for me today and when you see what they are realising its hard to see em making a profit at the end of the day so my search for some young steers goes on. Did not notice the crap weather till I went to drive home and my god did Wrighty choose a good week to go away on his hols, cheers Buzzer.

I thought you were just a “hobby” farmer Buzzer !!!But you are bloody well tighter than the greedy “dyed in the wool” professional farmers !! dear oh dear !! So why don’t you give the Knacker men a “heads up” I’m sure they could supply you with some stock at “Your price” well it might be a bit dodgy but you could spend your many hours of leisure time nursing them back to health !!           Dennis.

Dennis you got me all wrong, although I don’t rely on the farming bit to survive and to put bread on the table and occasionally a bit of meat you have to be sensible when buying or as I say going through the IN door as it makes it a lot easier when you go through the OUT door at the end. You must yourself have done this in your business life and I know I always did, looking to get out easy without great loss even on a rainy day as they say.
Puzzles me to as to what you do with your time nowadays, hobbies passions other than sampling all manor of brands of Whisky, enlighten us please cheers Buzzer.

Well Buzzer, Dennis used to sit on a little cart and watch a horses arse bob up and down but perhaps whisky drinking has taken over now that old age has crept up on him? A reply will be along soon, rest assured!

Hiya Pete & Buzzer, Yes Harness racing was my hobby for about 20 years which I enjoyed enormously although the sport cannot throw off it’s dodgy reputation which I’m sad to say still prevails no matter how the current fraternity try to promote the sport ! Unfortunately I got clobbered with serious “ticker” problems in the late 90’s and was 24 hrs from deaths door in hospital, however I’m still here against the dire predictions Anne was given about my continued survival ! Apart from requiring a heart transplant I am grateful to wake up each morning, swallow my copious medication and look forward to what the day holds ! And contrary to popular belief on TN I am not a Whiskey imbiber by any means ! the odd one yes( with ice & water) but only very occasionally, now a Large G&T prior to our Sunday lunch  which Anne pours for me as I measure the Tanquery by the “Glug” !! plus Shw-------pes & slice of lime ! great ! Cheers Dennis.

Still popular around here, harness racing that is, and the wife of a deceased haulier is/was involved with it. One of Mrs Windrushes carers trains horses for it aswell. When I was made redundant 14 years ago and at a loose end I did some work erecting stables for a local farmer who had recently had a heart transplant, he was only in his late twenties but has since recovered well and now has a wife and kid and is as busy as ever.

Pete.

Dennis I notice that these horses have a sort of leg harness on supposedly to restrict the horse to breaking in to a canter, are these worn by all race horses or do some run without it Buzzer.

They are called “Hopples” Buzzer and they are used on the Standardbred Pacer, they keep their gait in synchro i.e. on a lateral gait whereby the near and off legs go backward and forward together . Incidentally the pacing gait as opposed to the natural “Trotting” gait is the faster gait, I know it sounds unnatural but it is a fact. Our horses were all Pacers which are the majority in the UK, America and Australasia. However, they don’t allow pacers on mainland Europe they only race trotters. My first decent race horse was out of a Pacing mare by an imported German Trotting stallion He raced as a Pacer but when he was going “free legged” ( no hopples) in training if you could roll him over onto the trot you had a first hand experience of the two gaits. But Pacers will go without hopples but usually do need Hopples to help keep them “on the Pace”. Hope my explanation is understandable ! Cheers Dennis.

Hi Jimmer yes it was, Mr Perris kept badgering me to buy it and he got left an inheritance and came up with the Wonga, personally I think it looked far better in our colours but I am a tad biased, too much bling for my liking and Barbendium only belongs on the top of the wing mirror arms, Buzzer.

One to welcome back Wrighty from the sun!

Should have kept it and put in your old two Tone blue and red Chassis and showed it !! Would have been a great ad for the company ! I’m sure the taxman would have paid for the upkeep as it’s used for advertising

Busy yesterday and cleared a load of old pallets from the yard plus all the old bent load lock poles, then today took delivery of a new feed trailer and installed in the end of the barn flush up to the gates, more feeding spaces and higher up off the ground but had to remove the jack to get her up flush and ratchet strap tight… All we need now is some cattle and of to Shaftsbury tomorrow to see what’s about there, we will get some in the end just cant wait as it’s not the same we’out some about, Buzzer.

Well here is my report from todays visit to Shaftsbury market, firstly I reckon it were 10* C colder there than at home especially sitting ringside. Markets are renown for being cold places as most are made of concrete and in fact me mate was despatched to get us tea more than one occasion as when I wuzz clutching the catalog and pen my shivering became such I was in danger of unintentional bidding so kept my eyes away from the auctioneer’s glance. At the end of the day there were some grand cattle on offer but what I fancied just made more than I wanted to pay, perhaps I should wait for the clammer to receed a little and then try and buy some stock and at any rate its far too early for turning cattle out yet as too wet and not enough grass
For the ardent followers of the “Archers” or “Country File” just two of the names this thread has been allotted I did remember to take some pictures to record the days events which are posted below for your perusal, The first choice for me was the Lim’s then the Charolais and finally the Herefords but all a bit too old for my needs but they all came from one farm and I think they were well rewarded for some cracking stock but the best always sells well, onwards and upwards cheers Buzzer.

Are those prices each or for all the stock in the ring ?
