Davies Int. Southampton. With photos (Part 1)

Buzzer:
Busy today tidying up and final prep for TB test on Monday, cleaned out all chicken and put olduns on internet for sale some one might give em a second life there are about 35 and I asked 30 quid for em so should have a taker from some where. Just hope its dry on Monday as we don’t test under cover, got a Spanish vet doing test she has been here before and only does TB work, not busy in her homeland so she works for my vets, petit and good looking which keeps the helpers attentive Buzzer.

Evening Buzzer

As I was scrolling down I thought the photo was going to be one of your Spanish vet…, :unamused: we had some of ours TB tested this week and have comeback clear so it’s off to Leyburn auction next friday.
Well I could tell it was Friday the 13th today M6 was closed this morning at Preston so had to divert round and then ended up in garage with ABS problems, but we got sorted and ran up to Bellshill to load now down at Leeming bar parked up for the night. Tipping near York in the morning then a load into settle in the afternoon…

Cheers Wrighty.

Kerbut well as I thought the old chickens gone to a new home today so that did not take long, had a text at about 8.30 this morning cos the Lady did not want to disturb me to early but I had already been out and about an hour doing me chores, we did have a Chinky fella came here for eggs once and he asked what I did wi the olduns and I reckon he wanted em for oven ready but I aint seen him for a long time so he dipped out. The add was free on a local site, only one call but that’s all you need and they are getting a second chance at the laying game, only charged em 30 quid but it’s a Sunday roast out for me and the Boss.

Wrighty I must try and get a shot of El Vetinario when she shows up on Monday, trouble is I invariably forget its an age thing, good luck at the Market on Friday with you cattle are you going or is that left to Alice to deal with.
Been thinking how you have been getting on with the weather up North, how has it been on the roads etc. Snow is fine when your a kid but when you have to work in it not the same, on the roads or farming just makes life a whole lot harder to cope with.
Know you & Alice had some time away last year have you got any plans this time round and who decides where you go ? of course it has to fit with the seasons work on the farm but we never go away but my Mrs reckons Im’e on a permanent holiday anyways but I enjoy what I do and if we did get away you got to get some one good to look after things while you are away.

Weather here today was very bright but a bitter cold wind, nice but rain is coming they say but I notice the days are definitely edging out now as I am shutting chicken up later & later each day so roll on the clocks going forward and lets get on with the Spring jobs harrowing and rolling, cant wait in me new tractor which also has aircon for when it gets red hot, wowee, Buzzer

Evening Buzzer

The weather up ere is fairly cold but luckily we only had a light dusting of snow, nothing to bother us going about our daily chores.
It’s Alice’s birthday at the end of this month so we are going to Teneriefe for 9 days, a nice break before lambing starts with Alice’s eldest son David in charge of the farm.
Our loader tractor is in dock at the moment with a bust diff in the front axle, luckily our local dealer has lent us a replacement until it’s repaired so that will be this months profit gone…
Home tonight and back in work tomorrow for a Manchester followed by a Leeds, tip and then load cream for Westbury on Monday morning so not too bad for a sunday will just have to miss church again… :unamused:

Cheers Wrighty.

Today was first half of the annual TB test and what an experience, never ever trust a Bull that’s for sure. As soon as you set up a crush and gates the cows are on mega alert and they know summit is going on, after the first five went through we had to get the Bull and remaining cows in the pen but Bully wernt having any of that, one of my helpers had a lucky scrape with him so I went in with me little machine as he sure was not to be trusted but in the end we got it all done, not looking forward to Thursdays retest though and the Bull is going straight to market as too temperamental. After we had to clean up the mess and I am lucky to have helpers who stay till the end.
Wrighty I did take a snap of our tiny vet from Majorca but not good quality I am afraid, maybe some one with better abilities on the computer can make her look like she should, cheers Buzzer.

Evening Buzzer

Nowt worse than a bull you can’t trust they’re just hard work, so he’s better oft spot and safer for you. Busy day at home scanning the crossed yows, 155 twins 27 singles 14 triplets and one empty but she was late tupped so could still be in lamb. Scanning the pure Swaledale’s at home on the 27th, so fingers crossed we have as good a scan then.
Writing this sat at Bridgwater having just got loaded, full day tomorrow going up to York to tip this then hopefully home for three days R+R…chance would be a fine thing but as you know livestock = work.

Cheers Wrighty.

On ebay today. Robert

Busy here too today Wrighty, yesterday we had to resort to me getting my little loader machine in the barn to face of the Bull who got a we bit agitated and had a go at one of me helpers, you cannot be too careful when handling stock even with all the right equipment. One of the cows snagged her leg on the loader spike so I had to get her out today for the vet to give antibiotics and flush the wound, got her in a separate pen and she did not like it and pawed the ground like a bull, any way we had her in’t crush and dealt with her ok and put her back wi the others as she would be calmer in there, they have a retest on Thu so we can jab her again then. Thinking about it and I know you will understand this its like when you have to tag or ring a calf, the cow was fine before but can get very protective and turn real nasty so caution is needed at all times eh, cheers Buzzer.

PS. keep up the lorry spotting Wrighty and Robert even though I say it me self that F88 picture is orgasmic and she still did all Europe in the 90’s earning her corn.

Hi Buzzer, and all down the farm i have had a self imposed “keep off the social media sites for 8 =weeks” many reasons but nothing to do with any thing or comments on the whole of truck-net ,time was the problem, once i got on this old key board that was me stuck so i had a bet and won,al though i have been reading your posts ,on the sly.

IT is amazing how just this type of banter ,chatter ,knowledge keeps me sort of back in the old game ,all though i would no way EVERY DRIVE A LORRY AGAIN.i find i get enough out of this site, so thanks to you all.i just wonder why lots of men who will have something to say “do not” IF YOU KNEW ME i just about, can write by hand but you would not read it, and that is true believe me from a left hand writer ,who had to write with pen and ink at school and i used to drag my little finger over all i had wrote ,a bloody mess.so get on the key board it is easy…

The trouble with me, i do not see any one i ever worked with within the road transport industry, the people i now know are all ex blue collar workers ,so that is why i just go on and on here, I have written over 200.000 words now on sticks about my life from ,first school ,first work …seatime, jobs after, then transport.and sent it to OLD POND publishing that publish nearly all of the transport related books .but they told me it wants editing , i expect because i have told how it really was [no glory hard work long hours etc]however i have no idea what is required "Editing"if they wanted 20 tons of hand ball i would have been your man.now im thinking why have i told you this if any one knows someone who could point me in the right direction i would appreciate it .

That said, i have just finished"the vodka cola cowboy"e-book amazon £11.00 good read ,i would have like to have known more about “MICK"BEFORE” pro motor" now there is a cracking site the new one, it all flows what a good job them lads had .no hard graft, before they landed there, they were lucky men, it goes to show if you lived in the right area and new the right people there were good jobs around while we/me were scrating for£5 and hour 1980 i am pleased that some of the men done well…Buzzer as for BULLY you can never trust a bully like some i new lol with 2 legs…pdb.

Looking for Wrighty in Skipton in ‘our dancing town’…

John.

Nice to see you back on here PDB , was wondering if you were still with us !

We’ve missed you Peggy deck thingy

PDB welcome back but what I want to know is what was that bet, what did you get as a reward ? don’t think I could stay away for 8 weeks we would be on page 37 or 38. trouble is you wonder if some one has passed when they don’t post owt for a while.
As I walked down to do the animals this morning I had to put down my egg collecting bucket and take a picture, ■■■■ was the sky I could not resist and it is below, about early as we took the team out today and although bright and sunny it sure was cold, needed the coffee break half way round for sure and when you get off the carriage you are so stiff you got a job to walk but pleased they have had a run out. When all horses away I gave the carriage a wash as it aint bin done in a while and needed it bad, then I blew up the air bags on the suspension as they were a bit low as well, that’s it for today just got the TB test to look forward too (not) tomorrow fingers crossed Buzzer.

Evening Buzzer

Great photo on a nice clear morning, we’ll be up in one of them planes shortly on our way to Tenerife. Fingers crossed for the T B test and hope old bully plays ball I was combing one of our bulls today he loves it and would stand all day if he could, didn’t take a photo though in case I needed to make a swift exit…
Good to see PDB back online, like you Buzzer not sure I could do two months without coming on ere…

Cheers Wrighty.

Buzzer ,Wrighty,
Many thanks for your concern also to the other members who have commented ,well Wrighty it was more of less of what you have wrote "i do not think i could be away form here for so many weeks " precisely THAT. your always on the blo----y computer etc so i said ok i will keep off it for 8 weeks and the wife said she would try “PATCHES” FOR THE SAME TIME,I WON…PRIZE ,IN 52 YEARS OF MARRIAGE I ONE ONCE…LOL

Buzzer is the TB testing a MAFFI U K only requirement or is it EURO -WIDE,I understand the significance of the test however does “pedro” up in the hills and beyond IN Spain doing the same…I and others used to deliver Lambs [carcasses] all over Spain and the hygiene was not good maybe they have got to our standard?
They were strange ,if any of the lambs [carcasses] were on the trailer deck .as the strings had broken that were holding them on the meat hooks ,they would want us the driver to crawl under the meat that was theirs, to pull them out first why??the were the same color as the lambs hanging on the hooks i never found out because i would not do it…when they eventually got to them while unloading they would take great delight and throw them in the corner of the abittior as if rubbish and sign the CMR so many short,[so they thought]after it was finished I WOULD STAY ON THE BAY go to the office and tell them what was going on they would ■■■■ a deaf one,so i would then give them the chance to alter the CMR then go back in and put the lambs carfully back on the trailer, they would be gobsmaked, the CMRwas soon changed and they had their lambs…but know where to wash out another problem…pdb

Today was TB retest day, did not sleep well last night thinking how the hell can I get Bully separated from his girls with out any one getting hurt. Off I goes and bought a bag of beef nuts got a couple of troughs down and tempted them all out the barn with Bully as well, then slowly we separated the cows in two’s and three’s back in’t barn, had Bully on his own opened the gate straight in the crush and shut the gate then chained it to make double sure it was secure, he had a wait of an hour for the vet arrived and penned him on his own which he wer’nt too keen on then ran the cows through no problem, all clear test and Bully booked in the fat ring on Tuesday, cant have that playing on me mind that he may hurt someone even though it means losing money, I know some who would sell him for breeding with out a second thought, all fun in the farming world some you win and some you lose bit like transport really, Buzzer.

Aye Buzzer you can’t be too careful where a Bull is concerned no matter how quiet they may have been they can turn in a moment ! Our foreman shunter who was from a local farming family had his elder brother, who ran the family farm, killed by a bull ( a good few years ago now) that was jointly owned with the farmer who’s land surrounded our depot ( I’m at his funeral next Thursday :frowning: ) Apparently this bull had been the quietest they had ever had !. On a funnier note although it could have been serious, back in 1969 I was once delivering 10 ton of Fert to a local farm when the knacker man turned up to collect this Shorthorn bull. Well we were working away tipping this fert and the farmer told him he would come and give the bloke a hand to load the bull but this fella said nah! you carry on I’ll soon have him loaded and he disappears into shippon ! About 2 or 3 minutes later there was screaming and shouting from the shippon and we rushed over to see what was happening and this knacker man was up clinging to the overhead airline pipes and Bully was sharpening his stubby horns up and down the up right pipe in the stall. They had a right job to get him loaded after that. I just got on with tipping the rest of my load ! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis ah the delights of hand ball fert, remember loading at ICI in Avonmouth of the elevator, they gave you one man and you dare not miss every other sack and that takes some doing with 20ton coming your way, later it were all 30cwt pallets with 3 fork lifts doing you took about 5 minutes to load and only a fly sheet for that load, we even loaded the French SCAC trailers back to Petersfield for Dorchester Transport, that’s why we always put our hands up for loads of ATO chem plastic pellets to Neath.

The odd load of fert I did was from Crossbones at Bridlington subbing for K.Fell & Co Minthorpe, who I bought out in 1976. But in general anything to do with Agriculture, IMHO, was too low rated for me and I quickly realised the fact and gave it the “elbow”. Happy days  Cheers Dennis.

Nice day again here but a bit chilly, frost never went off under the hedge rows all day, did me chores this AM with Bully confined in the horse barn but aint happy. Went for a afternoon stroll round the summer grazing lot with Mrs D and young “Woody” who chased some Canada geese but cant just work out how they get away so quick.

Wrighty how did you get on at market today ? just wondered like , cheers Buzzer.
