Good to see some up to date pics on the thread again. Out of interest, how far into Europe do you run to?

Andrew…nice photo,s…some time back you posted a photo of the Blanc from the French side, next time you’re heading into Italy can you get a photo of the Italian side, just as you come out the pipe…I’ve a couple l took 40 years ago, would be nice to see what it looks like today… :smiley:

There you go Fergie i knew the international blood in your veins would rear its ugly head but must agree its good Andrew takes these pictures so us old die hard truckers get a fix sitting on a computer. As you say its definitely changed from how it used to be but ime not so sure it is as enjoyable as I remember as we did seem to have some laughs along the way, cheers Buzzer.

PS. No fee needed, but Andrew must be cab happy with his new charge as he took his time posting this last lot.

Once we get that pink coach up and running J.D. we’ll load her up with all us old timers, get young Horry to drive, and a trip l recon…le havre to Milan…on all the old roads, stopping at the old routiers, cafes, and bars…might take a bit of time though…but, what a trip… :wink:

Sounds a crackin idea mate, but we better carry some emergency fodder as most of those places will shut up long ago, always remember a restaurant near the sawmills on a bad double bend on the road to the blonk cant remember the village but it was a long one down a hill, there specialty was spud and onion bake in individual terracotta dishes so hot you dare not touch 'em for half an hour. Always had a man parking you up so as not to waste any space if you were going on after dinner best to park across the road else you wuz trapped till morning, cheers Buzzer.

Evening all, Andrew I love the pictures, and as Fergie, and Buzzer say its super to see how it is today, from when we did it!..Maps…pictures…its an age thing!

When I did my “marathon”, utilising a very, very, circuitous route to collect my LB76 from Bordeaux, I was amazed just how the roads had changed, the familier Routiers closed, and how the lorry traffic was pushed down the “pipe” of the AutoRoute.

Did not affect me with a 40kph tractor and trailer, except just outside Anguleme, (told you the route was a journey of memories), when Mr “flic” stopped me to enquire if I was really from the Isle of Man, (the Deere I was using has IOM red number plates), as he goes every other year to the TT. Spent an hour talking…then had dinner together with him and some of his mates, just talking about Bikes, and biking, …oh and the 76, and 60s and 70s TIR work. Amazing the interest that there is, now its all gone.

Keep posting the pictures, but take cash…not “Fifi”…for I fear her mileage may have been turned back…we need to recruit more modern versions…Euro 3 ■■

I appreciate nothing to do with lorries today but thank you to take the time just to read the below. My brother Steve is taking part in this year’s 2014 London Marathon.

Four weeks until marathon day and Steve needs to raise just over another £2,000 to hit the £5,000 target he promised Tommy’s he would raise for his London Marathon place. Your money will make a real difference to ensuring families don’t go through the pain of stillbirth, miscarriage and premature birth that his family did with their little baby boy Adam. Andrew your pictures of your travels round Europe are appreciated by most on this thread and thanks for the one’s of other Brits still doing the job today, they are the rarer breed. Might one make another request and that is take a few shots of any surviving Routiers or Restops and we can all see if we can remember them, I know that present roads that you now travel on there may not be so many but im’e sure you will come up with a few, thanks again in anticipation Buzzer.

If you were heading into Turin, not a lot of traffic in those days.

Not a lot of traffic on the Autoroute either…

And if you were heading for Rome, and you had a couple of hours to spare, you could just park up and go sight seeing…


Bet you couldn’t do that these days…so, have have things changed I wonder?

DD we were very busy at the time and I bought it to primarily shunt tip and load trailers in the UK but if you ask any operator when push comes to shuv and a trailer has to ship it has to ship with what ever is available, so green card on it and away. That little P cab had a 4 over 4 gearbox with split on the top 4 so 12 speed, very nifty once you got the hang of it. We ran it when there was a lot of strike action going on in France but it kept getting through on back roads and lanes up and down and did us proud, plus we never painted it and then we unloaded it when some thing more suitable came along. Plus it was quite light so had a good payload, cheers Buzzer

though that normally involved finding the nearest bar/ restaurant. :laughing: :laughing:
