Davies Int. Southampton. With photos (Part 1)

Buzzer:
Going back a little, Pat called them George and Mildred when he worked for him but we renamed them Zimmer and Twin Peaks when they were with us, it is of course George Rayner RIP and Mary he was a good old boy, Buzzer.

PS who are the other two in the picture ?

This pic was taken by me on the Sealink Soton to Cherbourg boat New Year’s Eve 92. The other two in the pic was Phil Pragnell and his missus! The he was on BKG at the time?

Hi John
If you have any spare could you bring a special copy of Commercial Motor for me on Friday only being a poor driver I cant afford one like you rich pensioners.
Also does anyone have any pics of John Smith in action

Cheers Rich

Rich,

I’ll do you one for £12 it’s signed by Steven,James & Horry

Regards
Richard

Funny that Richard, our longest serving driver Roger has a lovely wife and god knows how he managed that and she honestly thought we had three boys, like you she had never met James, cheers Buzzer.
PS. please stop chopping the rates it’s not good for business.

MaggieD:
Hi all,

I have not eaten today because I used my £2.80 meal allowance that Angie gives me every day to purchase a copy of Commercial Motor, if Mappo had not given up his paper round he would have doubtless sold me one for 50p, and the pages would have been stuck together , anyway I was driving through Four Marks and spotted a paper shop, pulled up jumped out of my 1978 Magirus 232 only to be harassed by a Big Issue salesman trying to relieve me of my cash,he reminded me of a chap who drove for STS transport but I’m sure I was mistaken,it was the bottle of Frizzante he was drinking from that led me to this conclusion. I ignored him and his shouts of “Do you want a Plus” and went in and having parted with Angie’s hard earned cash, I grabbed the magazine and quickly thumbed through it finding the article.
A wonderful story about a family business that is doing really well in these hard times and long may they continue,a credit to all the family’s hard work over the years even more so having employed the likes of Winky, Mappo, and some bloke called Rocky in the past :unamused: It was such a shame that Horry wasn’t even mentioned in the article, only his brother Steven and some bloke called James !! I wonder where that little lad who used to wash the trucks off in Lorraines is these days ? :open_mouth:

Well done all at Davies International

Regards
Richard

Richard, thank you for those kind words, it is appreciated. Unfortunately Horry was unavailable at the time of the interview, so the other one stepped in. He was last seen being chased out of Lorraine’s by George, who accused him of jamming centime coins into the pressure washer. Unbeknown to George, the last truck on the washpad was burgundy in colour and the name on the door of the said vehicle rhymed with ‘Moshmenna’.

With regards to Mr Cherrett, picture on Soton thread, the evidence is quite overwhelming that he was solely responsible for removing all stocks of Myrina oil from the security hut. In his defence, this would probably be just enough oil to make it to Pompy docks in the Frogtrotter.

Here are a couple more pics of George and Mildred

Here when he worked for Tony Newman T/A Routenorth

And when George worked for me

As you said good old boy was cremated with his stetson and cowboy boots in a cardboard coffin!!

Regards Pat

Hay Stuart… I’m sorry to say that Bailey J.passed away last year,he lost the fight to the big C. I think I known what he’ll be doing up there now…

Now this one might test your brain cells, here he is in the old raised portocabin office complete with his Crombie coat which he often had just slung over his shoulders. Although he originated from up the old London Town somewhere he did move to the waterside for a while, do you know this man and what was he selling ? Buzzer.

Well done that man, he turned up at 5pm one day and I had never met the man before. He said before I leave here I am going to sell you a new truck, confident bugger but the deal he offered was so good I could not decline the offer and after a night’s sleep I rang him and said would you do the same deal on two, yes came the quick reply and that’s what we had. At least he wanted to sell you a new Volvo unlike the pratts in the job today at MC truck and bus, cheers Buzzer.

I remember when we just had fans JD…oh and sleeping across the engine cover, home made curtains in the windows. Oh, and no proper retarder ( unless you had a Berliet )… No Clim Pod■■? What would Tony the tart think of that■■?
I well recall him sweating his nuts off In the old 88 you restored. These boys now don’t know they’re born… CD playersf , microwaves…? We had tapes and a gaz bleu. Not to be confused with Gaz IOW…
" You were lucky ". … To quote Monty Python.

Take Mappo for example… When he started driving his back mudguards were thatched and the log book was in Latin…
