John,
Truck driving was a family tradition and I have held an HGV for thirty odd years. Went for interview with Edwin Shirley just after passing my test but was too young to drive for them and it would appear for lots of others at the time (insurance Co’s.wanted you to be at least 23). Started work for Square Grip in Eastleigh 1980 and before I knew it was married and started the family thing. started work for Clapcotts in mid 80’s and continued tanker work up until 2006 when I “retired” from driving as it just wasn’t enjoyable any more.
Never drove abroad, although I wish I had at least tried it, enjoyed driving in an era when it didn’t matter in what part of Britain you were you got respect from other people and road users, not like that any more as far as I am concerned.
The pictures are all out there somewhere it’s just a matter of finding them, the one of the your truck in the snow was borrowed from a video on the BBC website.
still got my HGV, done my Driver CPC and still get to drive occasionally in my work which is around the New Forest area so not many hassles.

We used to tip loads in Sayers yard at Thatcham when we wuz on the SCAC job in the early 80’s.ATO chem.plastic pellets in bags but Sayers did the bulk loads as well, always a tidy fleet, cheers Buzzzer
Hi again John… as I recall, Sayers yard was on the left as you went down the hill into Newbury on the old road…Did they have another yard at Thatcham? Or are you talking earlier times? Before the By pass… ( Newburys, not yours )…
Either way I always remember passing their yard , driving an ancient ERF and wanting to be a part of the glam world of " CONTINENTAL " and a Scanny 111. About a year later I discovered the reality of spending many nights away from home, long hours and bent customs in many different countries with hours , and sometimes days to clear…most of it not so glam… Must have liked it though like most on this site, gluttons for punishment eh.

Bonjuie Balders , we also used to tip in Sayers at Thatcham for SCAC,I used to pull trailers for RH&D who’s main office was in Poole but they had a portacabin in the dock at Pompy of course that’s way before its like it is now only room for about 20 trailers and a gravel surface but I never remember bumping into you all those years ago,i remember the steele pipes they used for piling when they extended the dock coming in on SCAC flat trailers good job tipping them at £25 quid ago with no diesel cost, even in them days on a good week you could earn 16 or 17 hundred quid on traction.Remember Mappo having a disaster trying to pick up an ATO trailer which had been dropped to low by the tug driver,it ran away with him and went down on its nose taking the legs with it and bent the chassis like a banana, but we got it lifted up with two big forklifts and delivered to Newbury.do you remember there were four security guards on the gate in turns ,one had a fruit and veg barrow in Pompy and one was an alchoholick good old days, now look at the place you need a map to find your way around.
The thing is Balders when you had that atki you could only go one way and get a posh motor once you had done ur time, the thing is today these old boys go straight into modern trucks with no learning curv but do they realize wot us olduns put up with,me I had a non sleeper Mandator on for PBC but when your young its a big adventure.
Anyway my brecky is calling and ive already unblocked the sewer this morning, think we need a seagull centry fitted to the loo to prevent this re occurring but we best not go there so cheerio for now Buzzer.
robthedog:

I didn’t think it was a good enough spec to have been one of yours, it was the colour scheme that made me think maybe

Ha! who would think you and I would end up on here discussing your toilet habits…Maybe , we should start a new thread about that…I wonder how long it would take to get to a hundred pages…
Yes, I do remember the gate boys… thank’s for reminding me!
The old Mary Hopkin days won’t return, and I guess that’s why all of us love remeniscing. and the truth of it is , we really did have it tougher then. FACT…to quote David Brent . The trucks we drove, and the roads we drove them on, the characters and the friendship.
The last truck I drove, about 2 years ago, was an M.A.N. with an automatic gearbox, tipped in Paris…, reloaded Rouen… and SOOOOO bloody boring. Like being a train driver.
Ah well. tata for now, Balders
Baldrick1953:
And by the way…1700 sovs a week back then■■?
That was an earner. Luvvly Jubbly as Del would say…
Good dosh then Balders but you did four Manchesters and a Sandbach on a Friday so you could wash down the motor in the afternoon ready for Sunday night, and some times you had to reload tractors from massey fergusons at Coventry on the way home but cant believe we used to all that legal either.Remember doing two loads of ATO to Scotch me and Mappo leaving on a Sunday afternoon and I swear he had sosage, egg and chips 7 times in a row by the time we got back to Pompy even turning down a chance for a couple roast dinners but he wasn’t eating that crap, cheerio for now JD.
Buzzer…don’t forget the fertiliser back loads mate, nice bit of bunce.
I can’t believe how you,ve exaggerated my consumption of sausage egg and chips
I,m sure I only had it six times and not seven on that trip.
Baldrick…hya Stuart mate, I,m sorry but no matter how hard I try, I just can’t
Imagine you in yer wellies planting spuds. Keep taking the tablets.
