I think having one with nothing on it is something to do with the Curryhouse Curtains Brigade? Signifies that you are a definite Long Distance Mutha Trucka Badboy. Plus its always useful if you hit a bump in the road and your dreamcatcher falls off your frilly pelmet it lands on your table instead of the floor. Onto the obligatory Guinness bar towel.
Now this is just a fairly boring observation on dash tables but no doubt it’ll turn into an argument about them.
My observation in that the vast majority of dash tables I see in people’s trucks have next to nothing on them, maybe a packet of ■■■■ and a phone. The table itself is reason enough to get a fixed penalty from VOSA so why would you risk having one only to put nothing on it? I have quite a big one in my truck and it has loads of stuff on it, nothing that massively harms vision that is, well apart from the table itself, and a giant Lego head! But he’s in line with the pillar so no vision is lost.
Also of course they are not cheap, mine was €130. It just seems a lot of money not to use it.
What i want to know is why ARE they so bloody expensive. After all once you have a template then just a case of cutting the wood to suit. mdf is cheap enough etc.I know some look fancy and stuff but a plain one shouldn’t cost the earth.

Can you really get a fixed penalty for having a dash table Switch?
I bought one for my old topline in Germany and it had a TUV sticker and note to say that it was safe to remain in place while driving. Does anyone think that would cut any ice with the VOSA?

Haha excellent post! Especially the Guiness bar towel…
Even so I might be getting a TGA soon and you’ve got to admit there isn’t much shelf space in one of them.

The problem arises if they impinge upon the swept area of the wipers, which pretty much all of the fitted ones do. I’ve had a couple of warnings from VOSA but no fine as yet. It would seem VOSA are the only ones pedantic enough to bother, they are very common across Europe.
Well if you want pedantic then vosa are the people to go to. I think its because its an easy nick that they like that particular offence. On a recent pull at Purfleet, I handed over my paper charts and digi card for the previous 28 days knowing full well that I was in deep ■■■■ due to at least 3 bits of naughtiness, after 5 mins he comes back, “Thankyou driver, off you go.” I was so shocked I nearly forgot to say thankyou! The field of vision offence is a nice easy one for them cos it doesn’t involve too much brain power

I agree, when I ‘lived’ in my truck a table was quite handy. I can’t say I really need one now.
Do you think if you got a matt black one the VOSA would notice? Haha
Back in the 80s and 90s,it was all the rage to fit black fake bulls in the windscreen, and items of a bull fight, those spear things, and not forgeting the international flags of all the countries that you had driven through, naff or what.
