Dartford tunnel

Isn’t it about time this ridiculous set up was dragged into the twenty first century ■■ Either banish the tolls or automate them. Please.

Not much help if you have to queue in traffic for 40 minutes to get to the toll plaza…

I had a dream once that the government were gong to get rid of the tolls once the bridge was paid for…

I got told the other day, that the tolls were being kept in place as a congestion charge - only the government could come up with that as a serious statement! However they did say that the toll booths were going in favour of ANPR billing as you drive past, but that the tolls were going up to pay for the technology.

Gary

i agree…they spend ■■■■ knows how much on building the flyover from the m20 to elieviate congestion, then clog it up again at dartford.

Got one ! But as orys says its no bloody use when you queue for an hour before you get the chance to use it.

Fully agree there. Dont think i have ever been through without being sat in a queue for what feels like days!

France are the main users of the peage and they do work, sometimes they have to queue, but in general they are quite free running.

I don’t have a problem with them and if there isn’t an accident I doubt anyone is queueing much more than a few minutes.

Well, I’ve been queuing for much more, like 2 hours for example, just a friday afternoon on the tolls just outside Paris…

And now they introduced the tolls on A4 motorway in Poland, you have to queue for 40 mintues in busy periods… That was good in 1970s when the French system was build, but we have XXI century now. Especially that Polish solution is stupid, as you have to queue first time to have a ticket issued and second time on exit to pay… It should be ANPR system, and then you stop to pay on exit, or better even, if you have local number plates the bill is sent to your home and only foreigners would be stopped to pay cash or card…

London congestion charge works fine without the toll booths, so what’s the problem to scrap them in Darfort as well?

that doesnt apply to dartford though...theyll be right back past the m2…as i type

It is ! Swanley roughly. Hence the post. And not an accident in sight.
Anpr is the answer IMO.

Erm, the news today begs to differ, something like £128 million I think that is owed to TFL for unpaid congestion charge :open_mouth:

Oh? I didn’t knew that. But there is still a question: are these loses bigger or smaller compared to the theoretical cost of placing toll booths at every entrance and congestion created by it?

You have nothing to complain about until you have tried crossing the George Washington bridge from NJ to NY especially if you have to do it twice a day with up to 2 hours waiting even with a tag.
If you don’t want to wait in line take the long way round and save the cost of fuel, and time.
There is no option for us over here unless we are warned well in advance and even then there is another huge toll to pay.

Why don`t various logistics and haulage companies, get together and file a law suit against the Govt. Citing the previous statements and sue the arse off this money grabbing bunch of ■■■■■■■■ :imp:

At least in the UK they get rid of the tolls once it is paid for, or reduce it for maintanence purposes. Over here it just keeps on climbing. The G W Bridge is now 75 years old and the toll one way for a truck is a staggering $65.00 :exclamation: Then if you need to go across to Long Island it’s about $40.00 each way.
Could you imagine paying 65 quid to cross the Seven bridge ?

No they don’t, as stated earlier in the thread the dartford was paid for and the government kept the toll as a congestion charge. The toll is also due to increase by about 50% very shortly IIRC

Yes it is going up, it will be a fiver for trucks. Also by congestion charge I take it you mean a toll to cause congestion!

Probably not far off for The Humberside Bridge - was about £18 last time I crossed it, that’s roughly 65 of your worthless currency isn’t it? :grimacing:

I think the money they make on ‘road fund licence’ and tax on fuel, and tax on the tax on fuel, and tax on all spare parts, only foreigners should be paying tolls ANYWHERE in the uk, we already pay more than enough.
