Dartford Crossing

The most beautiful sight of today - seeing them booths demolished !

I went through there on Thursday, one of our foreign friends was begging the attendant to let him through, holding up traffic in the process. The lady in the booth was more than happy to see the back of those tollbooths.

Probably I have seen her today as she stood next to booth and waved to anyone passing with a smile on her face. Nice lady. Little blonde.

she was smiling cos she just got her redundancy cheque

Looks like the foreigners will be happy with the new arrangements - they will be able to use the crossing for free.

To go with the free parking :open_mouth:

And the free HGV levy

Here is a great time lapse video of the changes

And the free HGV levy

Well somebody’s paying the levy?

For most European hauliers paying levys and toll charges are just part of their normal operations, they pay the Vignette for Belgium, Netherlands etc. they pay the Maut in Germany, so why wouldn’t they pay this?

They are making more from the fines than the levy itself

I was thinking the same thing ,I’ve dodged the tolls round Milan a couple of times as the barrier lift the camera flashed ,but never heard owt !

Looks like there could still be tailbacks going through the tunnels due to the fact that 4 booths with barriers will be used to control traffic, whats a safe maximum speed to go through those narrow booths, 20 mph? or are they going to put wider ones in?

This is what it is going to look like when finished .Ican not see any toll booths to control traffic.

Measures will be implemented to deal with oversized vehicles and goods vehicles that need to be escorted through the tunnels. Barriers will remain in place on this side but always open unless the tunnels need to be closed.

They are removing all but 4 north bound.

I think keeping the booths will be a temporary thing until they finish re-aligning the roads, but then there will be a new traffic control system for the northbound carriageway to allow tunnels to be closed, over height trucks to be diverted and Vehicle being escorted through the tunnel to leave the holding area.

I would think, looking at the pictures off the proposed new road layout, that they will be new barriers, not 4 off the old ones “repurposed”. I read it as a means to control traffic when 1 or more lanes need to be closed, for instance in case off a breakdown in 1 off the tunnels. I know it wasn’t written in the article, but sometimes a bit off common sense has to be used

To My way off thinking, it cant be any worse than before

No “just deciding to pop through on the spur of the moment” possible?

Bugger setting up an account - if you’re only likely to use the damned crossing a couple of times a year…
Bugger pre-paying - I’m not always going to be “Planning” going that way hours or even minutes in advance…
The crossing might become as awkward as using a Cross Channel Ferry rather than what SHOULD have been done - which is to hand the whole thing over to the public - no more congestion, except when ■■■■ drivers crash in the tunnels…

There is an alternative to setting up an account with them, you can use this company http://www.dartsave.co.uk/index.html to manage it and only pay after you use it, upto 7 days after with no penalty, unlike them who will fine you if it isnt paid by midnight the next day.
That covers everything but trucks, but according to the site you can use your SNAP account if you have one to pay it as well.

Oh FFS this again? There was a whole thread where people tried to educate you on how simple a process this will be but you seem to have just stuck your head in the sand and are unwilling to even try to understand the changes.
I bet you could be in a room by yourself and still find something to disagree with yourself about.
