DAF 2600

What do we think about the DAF 2600? was it a good lorry? and what were they like to work with and repair? This was the era of the monster steering wheel IIRC. It clearly influenced the later cab design but it didn’t tilt, was that why there don’t seem to have been that many about in this country?

Introduced in 1962 and in production till (2800 came) in 1974, some 15.000 were produced.

If the non-tilt cab was a major cause…most competitors did not have in their range…

ZF gearboxes, but later ones had 13-speed Fullers. The Dutch called them ‘Juke-boxes’ - a brilliant nick-name! Here are a couple of pics to excite you. Robert

hey Robert, mention this is a Dutch brochure (2600) the 13 ton drive axles were 2605 called and think this were inported in GB as the MB 1924 and don’t think you had the 1624 ■■?
But of course all had only 1000R20 or 1100R20 tyres ■■?

Het CAV, it was one of the best lorries in its time, pitty no tilting cab (awkward to work on), and drivers liked them to driver.
The first good engines in it were Daf’s own DK and DKA 230/250 hp SAE.
At first it wasn’t aviable with right hand drive.
The later Turbo version with it 324 hp was a weeker engine, head gaskets as the 3600 it had.
And for the rest as all, harsh, noisy inside of engine cover, coldy, ZF box,or two speed with the Leyland engines.
Had a lovely look, depend of the driver or owner.

Eric,

I thought the first ones had Leyland P680 engines, then they changed to DAF DP680s, then to DK1160s? At some stage, the grille changed from mesh to slats, so maybe this coincided with one of the engine upgrades. The slatted-grille one seem to have the cab mounted a bit higher, even before the 304 model.

Can someone do a definitive list of 2600 variants? Here’s an odd one, just to muddle things up further:

And to muddle further: Anorak kindly posted this pic on the Dutch cabs thread. It shows a batch of 2600s with high-roof conversions made by Paul & van Weelder of Nieuwerkerk a/d Ijssel (NL). Robert

Hey Anorak, you have right with the P680 engine, but WROTE the first best engines

That one is a 3500 one was at Sarens cranes Steenhuffel, test typ built for military but never took them ore maybe a few, they chose the FTF. In was more as 2,500 meters wide too, so not allowed for normal work.
ERF knows more about that 3500.
Think made already a list of the different types in an other tread, otherwise do it again ■■?
The DKB had a raised engine hump for the Turbo.

The Dutch cabs thread says the conversions on the DO models were done by PevW, but these 2600s are not mentioned there. Is there any supporting evidence to the assertion that PevW did any of the conversions? There may be some clues in this picture, that I nicked off the site mentioned in the other thread:

The cab is longer, in addition to the obvious increase in height. Does anyone know why this operator needed such large cabs?

At a guess I would say that that could well be a Dutch removal company. The truck has a box body and the fella appears to be wearing some sort of overall / coat thingy. The big cab would be a crew cab, big enough to take a crew of 3/4/5 men on a daily basis and more than enough room for a crew of two for long distance, European deliveries.

The DAF FTT (6x4) 3500 was a one-off as a tender/bid for the Dutch army. Indeed FTF got
the order and in the DAF-spec (specs are rarely with suppliers-names) it had a V12 2stroke
good for 448hp/2100rpm and 158kgm/1200rpm. Cab was in tilt-version and indeed this vehicle
was sold to Sarens as Tiptop so rightly mentions.

Note: Vehicle width was 3.10m and vehicle weight 21 tonnes
