Curtainsider or tanks?

As a newly qualified driver if you had a choice of curtain sider job or tanker which one would you chose?

Tankers is physically less demanding in most instances.
What sort of tankers?

Well that’s more a container job then isn’t it.
Do you just deliver them, or are you involved in the loading and discharge of the tank contents?

Well I do ADR tankers and it’s physically a lot easier than the pallet work I did on curtainsiders.

Thanks for the advice

Remember, as a new driver you may serve your needs better by going for the more challenging work instead of the easiest. You’ll likely learn more in the same space of time doing a challenging job, so you can improve your skills and experience quicker.

Tanks may be less physically demanding, but the job can be every bit as challenging as general work. And dragging a hose up on to the top of a container tank, for a top load is more physical than some may imagine.
Depending on what sort of tank work it is, it may well be for 24/7 plant deliveries or loads. Pallet work could be the same or more 8 til 6 shop type work.
The ‘devil is in the detail’ as they say. Depends on the exact jobs you’re looking at.

Those container style tanks are zb’ing horrible. They do not handle like a regular tank because they sit so high off the ground. Plus you have zero protection if you need to get on the top of one. Just a poxy little ladder that you’ll be banging your shines on. I’d pick a curtain sider to be honest.

I’d guess you’ve had those tanks on a skelly? If dealing only wth tanks it’s probably gonna be a step frame trailer. Not as nice as a road-barrel but better than a flat or skelly. The food container tanks we did were all single pots without baffles (easier to clean) and made for a ‘lively’ ride. Same as anything though, if you’re aware of these issues you can drive accordingly.

Take anything you can get .There is zero shortage
And you need to get experience in every type of driving to compete with the idiot bast EU drivers who blatantly tell TMs i do it cheaper .

I’ve not driven tankers, but given the choice I’d pick curtainsiders. Most of the work I do is to construction sites or domestic building sites, half the time I have to struggle to get the curtains open in 30 seconds then find there’s no forklift and handball off 500kg of plaster. But then, I prefer harder work - makes me feel like I’ve earned my wage, and keeps me on my toes. Don’t want to slide into less challenging work and cruise along.

I’m assuming tankers usually only do a few stops on a route. Curtains normally 7-10 depending.

I’ve been offered both after driving assessments so I have a choice

Splendid :sunglasses:

Getting skilled up on tanks is possibly more likely to lead onto other good things, it’s a specialist skill you will then have under your belt, nothing wrong with curtain side work, but for every 20 drivers who have experience on curtains there might be only 1 with tanker experience and when that lucrative own account tanker job presents itself you’re already half way in, i’d be inclined to go for the tanks while the chance is there.

Are tanker jobs readily available in general or is it a hard line of work to get in to?

Am assuming ( could be wrong ) most firms would be wanting experience and not prepared to train non experienced drivers?

I literally walked into it unskilled because i knocked on the door and asked nicely for a job, best job i’ve ever had, had better top line pay but that was car transporters doing a week and half’s work every week.

Like everything, everybody was a newby when they first started, i don’t know many companies operating tanks that would take an unknown new pass straight on (though my company has put rigid drivers already employed through the artic test, already proved their worth so to speak), understandable they are cautious because the equipment is so expensive and even the slightest damage to a pressure vessel is an expensive incident.
Thats why i suggested the OP takes the chance while its there.

Normally Tommy, assuming you are a fairly new driver, i would suggest getting a few years driving experience before trying for the best jobs out there (though you might be lucky) because if you have a major bollox up as a newby you don’t want that bollox up to be on a job that just might be a job for life, if you get my drift, does that make any sense, probably not
