Current King of the Road -the truck everyone wants to drive?

Got to agree with you mate and to be honest, though I’ve just got an R450, the 13 plate R440 it replaced might have been in several aspects the better truck, but I jumped in feet 1st, only concern as to whether it had the Kitchen pack like the other one. Didn’t ask whether it had power option on the gear box :unamused: or manual override :unamused: or the crappy Scania bed that didn’t clash with my driver seat :unamused: or a clutch pedal for slow manouvering :unamused: still its new

Last one I drove was a R440, capable, reliable etc but they messed about with it somehow so when it read 89 on the tacho it was actually doing 51/52 (gps) so what would have been a 12hr shift ended up taking 14+hrs to do, ffs [emoji49][emoji49]

Yeah 440 its a good truck, as long as the bean counters are kept away from the specs sheet. When we got the 13 plate 440’s, they had off road option only on the gearbox, so they went into have the road going options put on, I managed to get the power option added aswell as normal auto and eco, it made for a really useable truck. I didn’t know that I was going to be offered this new 450 til a few hours before it arrived, so wasn’t able to quiz any further than, does it have the kitchen pack :unamused:

A mate of mine has just got a new 520 V8. I was talking to another driver, who know V8 lad too, He says to Me “they’ve strangled that those euro 6 V8’s so much that there as good as useless”, but you know what, I bet he wouldn’t refuse one, strangled or not. I’d have one, There’s no replacement for displacement

Radar19:
My Premium is good enough. Plenty of power for a 26t, lovely to drive with that iShift box. Only wish it could have a better cab. Massive engine hump, and no locker space!

I drove Premiums for 11 years, and they were a much underrated truck, but I would be loathed to come out the Topline Scania’s I’ve had for most of the last 5 years.

Thats exactly it, the headline hp figures (within reason) mean bugger all, its the cc and when and how the torque arrives that makes a pleasing engine, or not, then the gearbox and how it behaves engaging power and behaves at junctions if auto can make or break a lorry for me, hence my displeasure with arsetronic and any merc autos i’ve had to use.

Couldn’t even tell you what model mine is. Not interested. If I’m offered a new truck I will only have 3 requirements; a fridge, plenty of cupboard space, a microwave (or cupboard space for mine), and my inverter fitted.

At this moment in time I would happily take a truck that has enough room for me to have my bed and passenger seat down at the same time. I don’t need much room as I don’t take much, my work gear stays in my bag and I have a small fridge which I only take every now and then.

We are meant to be getting refleeted next year (believe it when I see it) boss has mentioned everything from DAF, MAN, Volvo, Scania. Manual, automatic, mini artic, keeping us in rigid,

My response always being the same , I’m paid to drive.

Secretly I want a new scania though

That would be a handy extra, but they do like to keep it as close to cheap spec as possible , I believe.

They have . We have one at our place R520 topline with a stick and its a horrible thing to drive . Its hanging the whole time - when you push the loud pedal it just wont pick up and go .
I was given a choice between it and an FH12 v2 480 with 800+k for 3 days - the FH won .

I think they whole willy waving thing has gone the other way. The willy wavers now seem to be the ones who like to boast about how the truck is irrelevant to them and how they like driving old crap heaps, like Hinos. The rougher the suspension, the more tricky the inevitably manual gearbox the better. Almost like people try to prove how manly they are by willingly slumming it!

Myself, doubt anything will surpass the FH16 750 I drove. I was proud to drive that lorry and it was as perfect a truck as I’ve driven. Endless power, arm rests, auto box! Heaven! I like driving nice trucks with features that make life easier, and I’m not ashamed of that. If I never drive a manual truck again it’ll be too soon.

As for electronics ruining trucks, I remember drivers saying the same thing for at least 25 years, and yet in Africa, Asia and South America plenty of EPS Powerliners are still earning their keep. May come as a shock but electronics can be fixed too you know, often much more easily than mechanical things.

Well I was one of those that more or less said the truck is irrelavent, I certainly wasn’t willy waving, but was coming from a practical point of view, that my priority is as long as it has a decent living space etc. , like you I prefer modern comfort.

The marque? No I don’t really care, although I gave a few eg.s of what I have had, and liked. As for wanting to go back to crapheaps, another no.
Although I was brought up on …quote: ‘tricky manual gearboxes’ I have got used to, and warmed to autoboxes which make life easier. I had a manual for a day last year, ok it was full synchro but would I go back to them? not a chance, anything for a quiet life nowadays.

As for the modern Electronic exports, there is not a lot of choice now, although I suspect that if there was, the over engineered electronics option would come a poor second.

The only V8 I’ve driven was an R500 on a 06 plate, and that was such step up in power and torque from the 4 series 470 I’d been driving. I only had that truck for a few months as a stand in before I got a new R420, which was totally breathless by comparison.

I sometimes think though that some off these drivers just say this stuff in some bizarre attempt at not losing face, but if your telling me that the V8 has been strangled, then I can only take your word for it, but I’d still have one, just from previous experience

electronics can be fixed too you know

at a lot higher cost

the reason i have manuals, is because you dont get gearbox faults for no reason, you dont get relays going that stop the gear box from working  and if you every lose a gear 9 / 10 times it will get you home, unlike an auto :grimacing:

as for the truck i want, ive got one 164 580, but my other would be 143 500, one of best engines ever built, look after it and it will just keep on going

i forgot the best bit both are going up in price not down :grimacing: :grimacing:

I would like to start a thread on the truck that all drivers would like to have

I’d like to have a snot-green coloured 08 reg Renault Magnum.

With the extras gremlin that allow bits to fall off or work intermittently ?

I’m talking about ours - other R520’s may be speced differently. Ours was bought on the promise that it would return 10 mpg and I suspect the standard gear ratios have been changed to keep the revs down and save fuel.It runs around 1000 rpm at 50mph and as I said gutless any attempt to pull away or get a burst of speed results in dropping at least one full gear to get going . A half decent 143 450 or a 164 480 would eat it on a poor day .

Sounds like a truck built by Magnet or Wren you’re after then…
