There isn’t a current model of truck I’d even climb into now that all the fun has gone out of it. As for a truck that is the envy of anyone: I’ve never been a ‘look at me’ trucker so I don’t understand the sentiment. On the other hand, if there’s a (not very current, I know) E-series ERF at the bottom of the yard, with a ■■■■■■■ 400 and a 9-speed Fuller in it, I’ll drive it to China and back for you! Merry Xmas one and all! Robert

Couldn’t give a toss what anyone else covets, limited to 55 mph power unless you are on max weight and doing some serious road work, bhp figures are almost irrelevant now, what the hell difference does 440 or 750hp make on a typical journey, sod all, its all willy waving and look at me cobblers. If i had my choice in vehicle, which i won’t get unless i’m prepared to give up my proper job and work for peanuts elsewhere, i aint, would be a manual gearboxed large as possible cc engine under a small as possible cab, with a proper retarder or Jake built in, make is basically irrelevant as all European makes are stuffed to the gills with electronic junk anyway so 5 years and they’re buggered.
First choice would be a Hino 700 with a rear tag axle…i don’t do nights out any more and we have to get in some seriously tight places, so the smaller cab (if it has windows all round) might just mean the night monkeys hit less of it on the gantries and customers premises than they currently do, well in theory, in practice they don’t give a toss and nor does anyone else so carry on chaps and do yer worse??
b.h.p irrelevant we do a job to bamff from ashbourne me in my 490 scani my mate in fh 750he can get to bamff tip and have 15 minits driveing to get to were we park at tufiff i can make turiff in 10 and have to roll in next day to tip ■■■■■■ mate is 2 houres down the road so bhp over eneything maters to me plus a generus limiter

Sorry mate, but that sort of running is exactly what’s wrong with the job now, having to run that tight that 15 minutes in a day is that important, sod that for a game of soldiers, but thats me, its your job and no doubt you like it or you’d leave.
I still maintain bhp isn’t the be all and and all there, if you looked at engine capacities and torque figures, which is what i suggested, you’d find out why the difference between the two, the bhp is just a headline figure.
You’ve been around more than long enough to have driven vehicles with a large capacity engine rated @ X bhp and and the small engine model rated X plus 10/20/40 bhp higher, every single time where lugging power counts the bigger engine wins out and gives better economy to boot.
Not as it matters, the thread was asking what truck would someone really want to drive, i suggested what i wanted for my particular job, i hardly ever get above 53mph except on overrun cos we don’t rush about and the company doesn’t want us doing so, but i would appreciate an engine with good lugging power and built in Jake or similar performance retarder, a manoeuverable vehicle that offers grip hence the rear tag, and manual box to make getting in tight spots easier and to take away the frustration of the auto box being unfit for purpose, a day cab would do me fine cos i don’t do nights out.
Ok my choice isn’t the same as yours, but a 750 whatever doesn’t impress me necessarily cos it would be overkill for my job, my choice doesn’t impress you cos it wouldn’t be your choice for your job.

Sounds good Rod, we went on Tues and suffered on Wednesday.
That’s what happens when 50 yr olds still think, and behave, like they are 20yr olds
it was a good day out though, so have a good un, and keep away from those strippers.
I’ve said too much

Good! That’s about the time I need to put the mince-pies and the turkey sarnies in the side-locker of the tilt. We should easily make it to Londra in Istanbul for a New Year’s ■■■■■■ on the EFES pils! Cheers, Robert
