hiya,
Fairly certain this motor was driven by a lad who lived in Darwen,
it used to be parked alongside the main road on a bit of waste land
opposite my then local the guy was called Tony who I think moved
to Barrow eventually, he was a very likeable lad and no doubt was
still with Brady’s at the end then over to TDG he’ll be just about off
the road as an OAP by now but he’s the type who would have gone
on for as long as he was allowed he loved the job.
thanks harry, long retired.
Was he called Tony Stone, or something similar?
hiya,
240 it’s over 40 years since I’ve seen Tony he was on for Brady’s then
and I would have been on for Deans of Darwen his surname i thought
was Edwards, a big ambling lad always grinning and a nicer bloke you
couldn’t wish to meet sorry I can’t be more certain about his surname.
thanks harry, long retired.
Tony Edwards is his name but I was told he was known as Stonesie in Darwin, hes known as OMO at Brady’s.
He was a tramper at Bradys over 30 years ago but had a bit of a mental brake down and from then on only shunted around Barrow. He definitely worked for Bowkers but was over 30 years ago he’s now retired.
Steve.

hiya,
Got you, remember the “OMO” thing something about not washing his clothes
the “Stonsie” bit stemmed from his liking for the beer with the same name a
pal of ours Billy Preston christened him that and it stuck, a nicer lad you have
never come across would do anything for you and always with a smile.
thanks harry, long retired.

I bet manouvering that 6x2 Big J on soft ground was “barrel of laughs” “george”,cheers Dennis.
Apparently that photo was taken at the Kendal Steam Rally near the Shap Road, that was my first introduction to Kendal!
When I was aged 10 I travelled from Maryport to Appleby In Westmoreland in this Atkinson one evening after school, Rayor Fletcher Snr was the driver, other lorries followed.
I noticed it was the Showground at Kendal “george” which was an extremely sore point with me with regards to the “Raceway” having been used for running steam rollers on then you were expected to race harness horses over the same severly compacted surface ! I lamed a good two year old filly in 1983,her near fore leg was always suspect in later years, but I never ran any more of our horses at Kendal again, much to the annoyance of the Promoters, but common sense dictated you can’t have Steam traction and race horses using the same surface ! useless info I know, but very relevant if you valued your horse flesh !! Cheers Dennis.

I thought that the steam gathering was moved to Flookburgh.
Quite correct “george”,the Showground in Kendal was sold in 89/90 IIRC and built on.Anyway,I thought you’d be off down the Wine bar by now to keep up with everything that has happened in Docklands to-day,unless,of course, you’ve just returned from the bar and are sobering up before leaving for to-nights escapade ! Cheers Dennis.

Where do you “dig em” up from Frank, great shots mate, was this the only Scammell that A/smiths ran? If it was I recall it loading at Beetham one day and the driver was a little scrote called “Gummy”,he was stood on the top of the load having a ■■■ and blowing the smoke down his overalls, but in the sunlight streaming through the sky lights it looked like he was on fire! The smoke was rising out of his pockets, back of his neck, trouser botoms etc. Mart Ashburner, the warehouse foreman told him,in no uncertain terms, to get down and report to his office !! But it was hilarious to watch all the same !!Cheers Dennis.

It might be incase he accidentally sets the sprinkler system off whilst having a prohibited sneaky ■■■.
Steve.
Now then Dennis as your drivers were top notch sheeters, Did they ever sheet pulp like we used to at Brady’s.
Not the best picture but gives you a rough idea.
Steve.
