hiya,
Fairly certain this motor was driven by a lad who lived in Darwen,
it used to be parked alongside the main road on a bit of waste land
opposite my then local the guy was called Tony who I think moved
to Barrow eventually, he was a very likeable lad and no doubt was
still with Brady’s at the end then over to TDG he’ll be just about off
the road as an OAP by now but he’s the type who would have gone
on for as long as he was allowed he loved the job.
thanks harry, long retired.

Was he called Tony Stone, or something similar?

hiya,
240 it’s over 40 years since I’ve seen Tony he was on for Brady’s then
and I would have been on for Deans of Darwen his surname i thought
was Edwards, a big ambling lad always grinning and a nicer bloke you
couldn’t wish to meet sorry I can’t be more certain about his surname.
thanks harry, long retired.

Tony Edwards is his name but I was told he was known as Stonesie in Darwin, hes known as OMO at Brady’s.
He was a tramper at Bradys over 30 years ago but had a bit of a mental brake down and from then on only shunted around Barrow. He definitely worked for Bowkers but was over 30 years ago he’s now retired.
Steve.

hiya,
Got you, remember the “OMO” thing something about not washing his clothes
the “Stonsie” bit stemmed from his liking for the beer with the same name a
pal of ours Billy Preston christened him that and it stuck, a nicer lad you have
never come across would do anything for you and always with a smile.
thanks harry, long retired.

not a great picture but this is OMO shunting at Kimberley Clark paper mill Barrow.

hiya,
That’s the fellah’ Steve have given the pic a good coat of looking at with a
magnyfing glass, thanks for that Steve, did Tony move L,S and B to Barrow
or did he just lodge up there and return to Darwen at weekends I left Darwen
in 1972 he was still living there at that time.
thanks harry, long retired.

He came off tramping for health reasons in the early eighties and then moved to Barrow to become a shunter and for nearly 20 years he lived at Brady’s yard in a caravan then married a local lass which didn’t last but he’s still in barrow in a flat. He does have a lad in Darwen called Carl who must be 35ish.

Not the best picture but gives you a rough idea.

Another picture behind the Scania Dennis.

hiya,
Thanks for the info about Tony Edwards, nice to know the lad is still around it
would be nice to contact him sometime but I don’t travel very far these days
I’ve tried looking for his phone number but no success, if you should see him
out and about tell him an old pal (Harry Gill) is asking after him thanks Steve.
thanks harry, long retired.

If you look closely at the top photo around the middle left you can see Tony’s caravan and car at Brady’s depot around the late 1980’s.

Fletchers Funfairs, these were taken by Brian Mcginley.

Fletchers of Maryport today.
Kindest regards
CG

There are a couple of other fairgrounds based in ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ from Wigton and Taylors who used to be based in Whitehaven but have relocated to Gilpin Bridge, ■■■■■■■■ near to Kendal.

In my day Fletcher’s had 4 lorries a combination of 4, 6 and 8 wheelers, they were an Atkinson, Albion, GUY and either a ERF or Foden, they bought an H reg Scania 80 but it did not last long in their fleet. At the time like most of ■■■■■■■■ Fleets their livery was green and red.

I am not too sure what they run now or how many they have?

Hello george
I think Fletchers have around 10 now, mainly ERF’s with one “05” reg Foden Alpha in the fleet
Taylors (I think) have around 11, a mixture of Foden & ERF
And Slaters of my home town run around 11/12, mainly ERF & Foden with some Renault Magnums too!

Hope this helps george marra
Kindest regards

Hiya Steve,I’ve searched a load of photos of sheeted loads and this is about the only one that “dropped” down to Bradys standards !!! IIRC I took a photo specially of this shambles and the ■■■■ who sheeted it (a driver not a Shunter I hasten to add) got an earful off me when I caught up with the idle ■■■■■■■ and showed him the shot!! At the time this shot was taken we had built up a large tautliner fleet and some of the drivers thought that running a flat and sheeting and roping were a “thing of the past” and they should only be pulling T/liners.However,we had a lot of very good drivers who weren’t fussed and much preferred the flats because it kept them on the paper traffic and away from RDC’s delivering Libbys pallets. Many of them took a great pride in their sheeting and roping skills and were a credit to both Bewick Transport and the industry in general.Cheers Dennis.

Tut tut tut It’s arse about face surprised the wind didn’t get in and blow all the sheets out.
The top guns used to like tipping waste in barrow with taut liners and sit and watch us stripping our sheets off our flats.

They might be able to sheet with the right gear but you have to have better skills at the mean brothers when no reel sheet
are available and sheet a 15 foot high load of reels with 4 half sheets and a flapper and outside export in the wind and rain.
Steve.

looking on facebook bradys are a bout to shut down down is this true?

They lost the reel storage contract for Kimberley Clark so most warehouses are now being demolished.

.

To do the job properly Steve, you had to have the right equipment i.e.Sheets and ropes,we never had 1 (one) wet claim in the 13 years we ran out of Bowies with flats, honest !I don’t know how Bradys went on and how the likes of The Addams family got any load to it’s final destination, dry, I couldn’t guess, unless it was during the height of summer during a hot spell !! They often had 5 and 6 sheets, the size of hankies, but snotty ones as well !! I used to go mad at Lamby and demand how they could compare them against our outfit, but heard he just liked winding me up !! he knew which was the decent outfit, plus I had Possy on my side,Brother !!! Cheers Dennis.

so is that the end steve or are they just sizing down?

Bill Glassey will have to finally retire then ! Cheers Dennis.
