Dennis it does not make sense to me running such a large fleet all on a sub contract.
None whatsoever “george”,it’s debatable wether the Prime contractor makes a margin so it dosent say much for the “subby’s” chances does it ? I would be suitably intreagued to see the subby’s operational costings ! Maybe they won the Euro “mega bucks” Lottery so they can subsidise their haulage business indefinitely! Cheers Dennis.
That is what I was thinking!
Hopefully our young budding haulier has learned something from these last couple of posts!
I definately have george. Manybe having such a large fleet on cubbing isn’t a good idea.
Possibly running a fleet with 50% on subbing and 50% own acount work is better
Kindest regards

“george” you have pre-empted my thoughts exactly but I wasn’t going as far as the percentages you were quoting.I would have suggested about 110% and subbing maybe 10 to 15% this way you were never vulnrable to losing any traffic to competitors and when traffic slackened off a bit you could still keep your own fleet more-or-less fully occupied. We found that having a better than average ratio of trailers to tractors a benefit as we always had trailers standing loaded which enabled us to absorb a couple of days,or so,of slackening off.You may enjoy having exchanges with the young, very knowledgable, “haulier” from Wigton but I wouldn’t waste my time,I’ve heard “sparra’s ■■■■” many times in the past !! Cheers Dennis.

You should really pay a visit to Morecambe and have a chat with a man who will tell you all about Haulage.
What about 400%+ with your own work, rather like Duncan Hill in the 80s, he owned 5 vehicles but probably had up to 20 (top quality) subcontractors, most of his cost base is variable not fixed.
Great advise george and Bewick. Very valueable infomation
This ESL subbing lark must pay off though because Phillip Wood of Carlisle runs 8 Lorries on ESL subbing, all fairly new.
Subbing is something to consider, but maybe not in the numbers that Brewer of Penrith has.

Dennis I’ve given my opinions on sub contracting in large numbers to other hauliers, now running a clearing house that sounds like a superb business, good luck with your new venture keep us updated.
I reckon there are some openings for “sharp” accountants in Southern Europe at this time, particularly in Greece !! Then you could move with the contagion as it engulfs Spain,Italy and Portugal and finally Eire !!Fee’s/Commisions/Bribes/Laundering charges paid in Dollars naturally !!Cheers Dennis.
I don’t have anywhere near the knowledge of the industry that some in this debate have so I could be a mile off, but from a personal point of view the idea of subbing out to more than one firm, as well as taking on your own work, sounds to me like a good way of ensuring you’ve not got all your eggs in one basket. In the rather choppy world that can be haulage, it doesn’t sound like a bad move to me. As for subbing out your own work, you just need to make that there’s enough margin in it for everyone to be having a slice of the pie.
Final thought Gill, just because a firms running brand new kit doesn’t always mean they are doing fantastically in the figures. In fact quite often its the ones running older but reliable trucks, with no monthly payments to go out, that can have the best paper trail.

I deliver into Igglesund now and have not seen a truck in their colours (apart from the Transits that some run around in), usually it’s Stobarts or Nofolkline Curtainsiders in their.
I’ve seen a few of Armstrongs with a wood based company on that the name escapes me, and also Jenko’s with “BSW Timber” down the side.
Hello dew
No, you won’t see one in Igguisunds colours because Stobarts got rid of that livery in 2006.
The BSW timber ones that Jenkinsons have are taking bark for BSW Timbers waste recycling business at Harker.

Another fine example of the [zb] you make up on a regular basis, the BSW liveried trailers that A W Jenkinson operate are engaged on UK wide bulk haulage, just because they have BSW on the side don’t assume that’s all they carry. Since when did BSW have a recycling business at Harker? They have a sawmill at Cargo!
Hello Duff Lock
Its called A W J Recycling, which is a 50% partnership between A W Jenkinson and BSW.
Really, its not Harker, its Hespin Wood near Longtown.
Once again you’ve proved that you just make things up or make assumptions on what you may have seen on your weekly outings with your carer. The company is actually called AWJ Woodwaste Ltd and it works in partnership with ■■■■■■■ County Council, BSW have absolutely nothing to do with the operation. You really should stop making things up or you leave yourself wide open to ridicule.
Bit of advice Diff Lock, you better hadn’t ridicule that young fella he’s a “protected species”,otherwise you’ll be verbally attacked by the “Stasi” and you may get a threatning message from the Mods !! Or maybe it is just me they don’t like and you will be allowed to speak your mind with impunity, lets see if you get a response,I won’t hold my breath !! Cheers Bewick.

Thanks for the advice Bewick, I’ll keep my head down! I’m just in the middle of reading the Bewick thread, only 8 more pages to go! It’s cracking read mate, you’ve got a lot to be proud of.
Nice shot of Normans D1000,the bloke that used to take those shots was called Roy Beecher he was from Clithroe IIRC,he sent us a number of similar ones from different places on the M6,I used to give them to the drivers so I can’t put any on the thread, bugger it ! Cheers Dennis.
Pinched this off Bubb’s scrapbook thread, and noticed it had an AO ■■■■■■■ (or ■■■■■■■■■■ then) reg, pre 1963, any of you old timers on here recognise it or recall who the original owner was ?

From what I have seen from your posts on here, you’ll not make it in transport you appear not to have what it takes. You should take up crofting in somewhere like the Shetland or Orkney Isles, or move to Iceland.
Hi ROBROY
That photo is’ny to clear but I am nearly certain the reg. is PAD it’s been around the rally circuit for a long time so no doubt someone will confirm or denye. Eddie.
