Hello.
Thanks little ha ba for the infomation on Geoff Bell (Carlisle). Have you got any infomation on there history?
Hello again.
I see that there’s little talk on Wigton Based companies, past and present. Coming from Wigton, I would like to see some Wigton Lorries Companies on.
Come on, what about Harrison’s, G.B Walker, Ross Transport, A.D Boyes & John Irving (was H & ME Fearon)!
P.S .Lets see some photos too!
Hello.
After my last comments, I’m putting a Photo of a G.B Walker ERF KV on which was taken at the Silloth Vintage Rally last Sunday (19th of June)
Hello.
Thankyou to ERF Guy for putting those fantastic Scott’s of Maryport photos on. I’am planning to put all my 30 Scotts photos on my the end of the month.
(P.S: ERF Guy, when were the photos taken?)

Hello.
A Big Thankyou goes out to ERF Guy, v7 victor and little ha ba for there useful infomation on Scotts of Maryport and Geoff Bell (Carlisle). Does anyone have any photos of Smith Bros (Whitehaven) Packaging Lorries? They were based at Whitehaven but had factories at Workington. I know Colin Patterson restored a Commer lorry in there livery this year (see photo at Silloth Vitage Rally 2011).
Can anyone Help?
Hello again.
Has anyone got any infomation on A.D Boyes? A firm favorite of mine (after Stobart’s and Scotts of Maryport).
I think they run around 15 lorries based at Ireby and Tata Steel, Workington.
Whats the History, how many lorries do they run and did they run some Scania 113’s in the 1980/1990’s?
Can anyone Help?

You are some “nosey bugger” you CG!! Good on you Marra eh! all the same!! A.D.Boyes of Ireby, now then I grew up as a youngster in Ireby in the 50’s,had a lot of relatives in the village at one time,my Grandad ■■■■ Oliver was the last village Blacksmith at Mains Hall.Anyhow Alex Boyes snr. took over the two vehicle “A” licence buisness of Jake Strong in,I think around 51/52 which was mainly a livestock haulier. The two motors were a Vulcan (I think) and a Leyland Beaver, the Jensen was replaced with a new Leyland Comet which I can re-call Alex driving into the village in chassis cab form! The cab that was fitted to the Comet was a Homalloy IIRC and William Gate drove the Comet from new and he remained as a driver with A.D.Boyes until his retirement. As the two Boyes lads left school in the mid 50’s Robbie first and young Alex a year or so later they each rode shotgun until they were old enough to drive at 17.Robbie was Williams lad and young Alex worked with his dad on the Beaver.Guess who sat on the bonnet of both of them(well not at the same time!) me! I travelled miles in both the Comet and the Beaver Saturdays and school holidays,I was probably a nuisance at times! but I loved every minute of it going to all the local livestock auctions as well the Scottish sheep sales. Then when Robbie turned 17 another “A” was granted and a 5ton Thames Trader (under 3 ton ulw) was bought,so guess who I rode shotgun with then,Robbie! For a while anyway then IIRC Robbie left and young Alex got a 7ton Trader which I continued being a passenger in until the turn of 59 into 1960 when we moved to Kendal. However those times in the50’s were very happy times for me and certainly wetted my appetite to enter the haulage trade as soon as I could at the age of 20.Don’t think I’ve got a bad memory although I sometimes can’t mind what happened yesterday!!! Cheers Bewick
nothing to do with the malt then dennis the memory loss
cheers martyn.

The ■■■■■■■■ thread has really bounced into life!!! Geoff Bell now there’s a no nonsense ■■■■■■■■ gadgy if ever there was one! IIRC I got to know Geoff in the early 70s when he was running what I would describe as an “intensive” operation between Scotland and Lancashire, with F86 artics(when Fast Eddie was running about in short pants!) I think he would have started in the 60’s and his well run operation, based at Willow Holme in Carlisle, was a credit to him.He didn’t just “manage” Carlisle Truck Inn he created it and owned it.It was probably one of the first in the UK and based on the American concept,I think he still continued to run his transport operation from the Truck Inn and at one time traded as Bell-Holliday when the late George Holliday joined him for a while.Geoff did eventually sell the Truck Inn to BP who piled into truck stops all over the UK IIRC so he must have had the right idea long before the Big Boys decided to take advantage of the concept!!! IIRC his main traffic in the early years was Glass bottles, two pallets high!! Cheers Bewick.

Unfortunately Marra I haven’t! A camera wasn’t something an adolescent boy carried with him in the 50’s! I did get my first Brownie camera when I was about 14 but was living in Kendal then.I made up for it in the 70/80/90’s when I took ‘000,many of which are posted on the Bewick thread. But I agree that if I could turn the clock back the shots I could have taken would be priceless. A.D. Boyes, J W Graham, H & M E Fearon,Johnson Bros. J J Bateman,W.Dockwray,Stan Fell, D Wilson,Uldale,Stricklands,Uldale.Bim Tyson Caldbeck. Two marras I had in the 60’s and 70’s when I started were Harry Thompson frae’ Cockermouth and Norman Dowell from Wigton.Happy days, cheers Bewick.
