Chris Webb:
That’s a great photo of the Scammell 8-legger coming out of the works .
Were the acid tankers running into British Cellophane?
Hiya Chris yes Brady’s ran a couple of acid tanks on double shift between ICI Blackpool and British Cellophane in Barrow and I think Cowburn and Cowper ran in as well with the old Scammells.Cheers Dennis.

Superb shots Stevie especialy the Scammell 8 wheeler exiting the steel Works I’ve come out of there a few times on a Sunday morning with a Comet and 4-in-line loaded with 22 ton of signode strapping for the Abbey which we transhipped onto the Octopus and trailer! I’ve said my piece a long time ago to young Bob about the delition of the “S”! In my opinion it was a childish act as both Jack and the Big’un were equally responsible for the growth of the Brady outfit.I know it was a standing joke for many years that the Big’un was the “S” on the end of the title but believe me he was an integral part of the buisness if not as high a profile as Jack make no mistake!!Dennis.
Yeh I often wondered why it was dropped. As you say Jack was a good part of the buisness. I remember my dad telling us about one of Bradys driver (I think Bob Kershaw) telling either Bob or Jack that he could have picked up a good load of GLIDER ENGINES but didn’t have any skids/timbers so Bradys made sure Bob had some from then on.
Anyway more photos this time of the F88’s they had some in Athersmiths the first is outside Athersmiths warehouse in Barrow its now a restaurant and Wacky Warehouse (although it probably was when Athersmiths owned it!)
Nice shots of the Brady/Athersmith F88s Stevie! and I can let you into another secret ,the Big’un always bought tractors and trailers in batches of six which I believe was a superstition carried on by the Young’un but I’m not sure! Obviously there were 6 F88s 3 for Brady’s and 3 for Athersmiths---- I remember them well! Cheers Dennis.
Ste Burrow:
Glad you liked them Dennis. All the photos were borrowed from Bob Brady when my uncle worked for him. Why did young Bob drop the “s” off sons? I never like asking in case there was a family fall out. Any way more old Bradys again.
Couple of the octopus’s I’ve been told it could be Frank Sleddon on the back of this Octopus?
When Bradys had a depot (or more than likely a phone box!) in Rotterdam

Following on from your superb shots Stevie I have a bit more info for you 1) Brady’s did have an office in Rotterdam the managers name was Edwin (A Dutchman of course) as they had half a dozen EEC permits which enabled UK operators to run on the european mainland and the permits were like gold dust to obtain! Maybe “240 Gardner” can give us more info on the EEC permit fron’t.2) The driver winding up the trailer legs is defo Nobby Clark as the motor is the only AEC Mandator they ran which was a disaster as it couldn’t get past Charnock Richard without blowing a head gasket so I believe that the Bigu’n cancelled an order for 6 Mamouth Minor tractors as a result of the Mandators problems!!! Cheers Dennis.

Well at least Bradys did it right. You do see lots of firms with various offices listed and they have an answering machine. Was that AEC a V8? I think Nobby Clark taught my uncle how too sheet and rope when he was learning the ropes.
I guess this must have been one of the last units with Athersmiths name on, I dont know whether there was a DAF 2800 with Athersmiths on?
Another of Bradys purchases was Furness Transport
Just arrived from B&W Motors

Hiya Stevie Nobby’s Mandator was a straightforward 6Cyl as the V8 didn’t appear until about 1970 (I think) and that shot would have been taken circa 1967 (I think the AEC was D Reg?) cheers Dennis.

Hiya Stevie I have to correct myself regarding Nobby’s AEC being the only one that Brady’s ran (new) they had another one a single drive Ergo Mamouth Major 8 wheeler in Furness Transport livery and if my memory is correct it was driven by a chap called Ronnie Lomas who had come to Brady’s when they bought out F.T.and it sure was a nice looking motor but not piped up or capable of pulling a trailer as the single drive would have been useless!! Cheers Dennis.
Got to keep the ■■■■■■■ thread up fron’t and centre!! as someone keeps robbing photos of it and transferring them to other threads!!! Here’s a shot of two new Bewick 113s just back from the paint shop.Bewick.

I have also put these on the Lancaster thread But no harm having them on twice.

Ste Burrow:
Where did you get them painted at coz they were a top notch paint job
Hiya Stevie I think these two might have been painted at Longtown but we used a number of paint-shops all over the place !! But some of the best job’s were done in our own workshop! But if we had a few to do we usually sent them to a Coachpainter two at a time!! Cheers Dennis.

Did a lot of repairs and servicing for Scotts when they were in Milnthorpe and I was friendly with young Ernie Emmerson ( he lettered a couple of Atki’s for me)he couldn’t read or write but if you put down on paper what you wanted he could copy perfectly!!! I was also a Pal of James Jeffries who managed Scotts of Rhyl Waltzer but I had nothing to do with Scotts of Barrow who were run by a Woman ( Elizabeth I think her name was ?) and she was a right slave driver with her staff!!! As regards the old bloke your on about was he an Emmerson or a Scott man? They both had some right characters in their gangs so I don’t know!!! Bewick.

Thanks for that Bibbs! Jimmy B was a character----I knew him well but I never bought any derv off Gilbraith’s.I bought my first derv off Brooke & Rees and then as we got bigger Gulf Oil took the account off Brooke and Rees and I dealt direct with the major.Sure sounds like there has been up-heaval in the AD ranks!! We are at a wedding in later August and Kenny M. will be there so I will try and get the full SP off him!! I was a founding Director and 1/3rd shareholder in Delta and it was me that got the Delta depot organised at Kendal.I ended up with 50% of the shares eventually prior to selling out to the Director that managed Delta on a day to day basis.Keep your ear to the4 ground! Regards Bewick.
Lawsons used to have a 8 wheeler of the same make (they were the dealers) and they had a fantastic Atkinson 8 wheeler.
Well “George” youv’e berated me for running British built motors when I should have been operating the Swedish marques sooner and up you pop and start praising Jed’s outfit for running Maggie D’s!!! Hey marrer! talk about double standards!! Obviously Jed made a very big impression on you as a youngster where did uncle “H” go wrong? Not only did Lawsons run Maggies but(pause while I roll on the floor laughing)but they were “dealers” as well.(As I wipe the tears away) I wonder where they were on the sales penertration list in ■■■■■■■■ I wonder if George Graham lost any sleep about the two sales he probably lost because Jed had to run the only two Maggies he probably “sold”!!! Maggie D’s must rank as one THE WORST trucks to appear in the UK in the 70’s Bar None! I can honestly say that other than the Scania 80 we ran at Bewick Transport we never had a bad motor but they sure were miles better than a Maggie! I wonder why you didn’t/couldn’t persuade uncle “H” to chance his arm with a Maggie D? surerley if a premier outfit like Jeds was promoting Maggies the other hauliers in West ■■■■■■■ must have been sorely tempted to follow suit so why wasn’t the county overun with Maggies like it was with Scania’s and Volvo’s? Probably the dealer wasn’t up to much maybe, who knows, the product certainly wasn’t!! with aching sides! Cheers Dennis.

Eddie Stobart bought one off them, in fact Eddie Stobart even bought the old depot off them in Carlisle.
