Cracking models BIGGEE only one problem my old son Bewick International never ran any DAF’s or Volvos !! They wouldn’t touch DAFs with a bargh poll but they did run a few Volvos in the UK over the years !!So now winter is here how about replacing them with a Scania and say a Magnum !! Regards Bewick (Mr.)

Looking through all these pics featuring Penrith hauliers and I have noticed a glaring omission-------what about D&M Cargill !!! Curly was a one off !!! some of you gadgys about Penrith must have some tales to tell surely! I believe old Curly met a sad lonely end in a log cabin or similar what crying shame . I was sorry to have missed his funeral !I hope he was buried with a set of tools & chain & dwang.!!!
Who were the three Curly drivers involved in the shunt comming off the Motorway — The first one stopped and the second one just managed to then the last one didn’t and stuffed the middle one into the front one (are you still with me?) The trouble was Curly had just re-built the one in the middle as it was one of his first artics D Reg. What a sickener!! Com’on some of you Gadgy’s in Penrith can own up as the old Lad is in big workshop in sky so there is no danger of another rollocking is there !!!

Cracking pics Bernard of some of Curly’s latter fleet but is there any of the early motors it really was a well maintained outfit !! I once remember calling in to see him when he was at Hackthorpe and he was down in the pit painting the gearbox on one of his motors !! The man was a legend there will never be another Curly period !! Bewick.

I’ve remembered another Curly “tale” from the very early 70’s ( before the A series ERF) when Curly rolled into Durose at Newcastle u Lymme about 8 pm with a brand new ERF loaded with Wokington rail . Apparently he had taxed it that morning and nipped over to w’ton and loaded it ready for setting sail the following morning !! However he had decided that he liked the new motor that much he turned right at Keswick and carried on south !! Anyhow he only had the gear on he stood up in so guess who gave him the loan of their towel and soap !! He also got a bollocking of " our mother" his wife when he phoned in later to say were he had got to !! The man sure was a "one off " Bewick.
Hi everyone,a couple more of curly cargills for you,the only old one Bewick is the one you see with the low loader which looks as it is in its second life after curly let it go.Bewick,i have sent you a pm,

There is a sticky at the top of the forum page, with notes - if you’re struggling send me a pm and I’ll jot something down for you.
Excellent screen name, by the way
Till you get there, here’s a Brady’s shot to put you on: not a good quality shot, I’m sorry, but the 40-year-old negative is a little tired! I believe that the motors are GEO 43/4F, a pair of Rear Steer Atkinson ‘Silver Knight’ tractors. 44F was later with Bowker, and cut down to a 4x2 unit.

I would love to see the Brady picture as an ex Bradys Driver.

I will have to ask my dad but I think this motor was in the name of Furness Transport who Bradys bought out.
Anybody know the relationship between Stampers (John G & GW) and Cardiff Brothers? I know Jim Cardiff ran the Glasgow end of JG Stampers for many years and later Cardiff Brothers had a few wagons there, not sure how long for though.

And one of the aforementioned motors, and which seems to have a sleeper conversion by W & J Riding

I believe the John Stamper in Glasgow was Geoff Stamper’s ( Penrith )dad 'cause I’ve heard Geoff refer to "Father in Glasgow " and G.A. (Gordon) Stamper Culgaith was Geoff’s uncle .Cheers Bewick.

Cheers guys - I love that photo!
There’s obviously a family tie-up and I’m pretty sure the Cardiff brothers are in there somewhere too. As I said before, Jim Cardiff was the top gun in Stampers Glasgow operation (Managing Director I think) in the early 70’s, and then the Cardiff Brothers wagons appeared, white MANs.
The memory might be going a bit, but I think the Penrith wagons were J. Stamper and the Glasgow ones John G. Stamper. Or maybe the other way around.
I’m just curious because I was with Stampers in Glasgow for a couple of years and Jim Cardiff was a decent guy.
I’ve often wondered what became of the whole operation - did the end of the steel work do for them?
