hiya,
Any pic’s of Burridges conversion??
thanks harry long retired.
.
Looking through all these pics featuring Penrith hauliers and I have noticed a glaring omission-------what about D&M Cargill !!! Curly was a one off !!! some of you gadgys about Penrith must have some tales to tell surely! I believe old Curly met a sad lonely end in a log cabin or similar what crying shame . I was sorry to have missed his funeral !I hope he was buried with a set of tools & chain & dwang.!!!
heyup, just got in from inverness, read your post, got some memories and i know an ex driver of his but i never got any photos, wouldnt you think that one his wagons would have been preserved, cos they were tidy motors, always well turned out,
.
Little bit off subject but near . Mentioned him before in a roping & sheeting post, maybe yungnud might know used to see a fella regular when backloading Sania 110 red colour might have been Daysons, anyway not the firm so much but the fella , Only had one hand the other was a hook, could manage a load of reels no prob 2 sheets & a fly, (not a pun but he never asked for a hand)
The James Cropper artic FJM422F was their first steel cab Seddon new in mid 1968 fitted with RR220 engine and I am certain the driver was Collin Veevers.I also recall that when the Bewick Atkinsons delivered pulp into the mill George Sandham , Croppers fleet engineer,(now theres a character!)would come out of the work shop and start berating the Atkis/■■■■■■■ but always ended up saying Croppers couldn"d afford Atkis and I would tell him Bewicks couldn"d afford to run thirsty RR !! When Croppers finally re-equiped thier fleet with Seddon/RR tractors they kept a solitary 6wheeler flat fitted with Leyland 600.This motor was driven by Frank Forrest one of the senior men who had no desire to drive an artic. What a grand bloke Frank was , after he retired he went on to driving PSV,s for Stainton,s of Kendal for a good many years mainly on school work.
The photo of Athersmiths Seddon&trailer was taken at the 3 Sisters Markyate I was there another night when Peter Davies shot the same outfit and you should have heard the ribald comments from the other drivers------words like Museum, scrapper,Ect ect… all in jest you understand!! I also believe the photo of the new Athersmith Seddon 8 wheeler (black & white shot) was the same vehicle when delivered new circa 1958.When we used to pass it on M6/M1 in Brady’s Octopus &trailer (Eric Poss.at the wheel) you would swear the Seddon was parked up in the slow lane!!! Happy days !!! P.S. Possy’s nick name for the 3 Sisters was The 6 ■■■■ !!!
Does anybody around the Penrith area remember the four drivers based in Penrith who drove for Maltby,Rotherham, based Multiple Fruit Supplies (GGD) on the Littlewoods contract in the 70s and 80s.There were two on afternoons and two on nights and parked on the old station car park IIRC. Names I remember were Gordon Hunter,John (Jack) Sowerby and Jack Paterson. The other driver lived up the old A6 heading north out of Penrith and his motor was parked in a lay-by opposite his house - he was on nights regular but I can’t remember his name .The tractor units were Scania 81s and 82s with blue, tandem axle box trailers.
The old black and white shots of the Brady Comets and Badger coupled to the 4 in-line trailers brought back memories of Sunday mornings in Barrow loading the Octopus & trailer for the Abbey at Margam. Possy would tell me which trailer had our 22 ton of Signode strapping on and I would jump into a Comet shunter and off into the Mill (Steel Works)to fetch it .The night shunter would have loaded the trailer on Friday night and it was always on a 4 in-line !!! If you have ever tried to pick up 22 ton with a little Comet that was on its last legs you will understand !! After 4 or 5 goes you got it coupled !! Then after a" Leaping Leana" start it was off across Hindpool Rd. and down Duke St. into the depot and along side the waggon & trailer.Bearing in mind I was 18/19 years old at this time '66/67 but in Barrow at this time The Big’un (Bob Brady Snr.) was a good pal of the Barrow Borough Chief constable so no problem there son !!! The Big’un would get into the old ex Vickers yard crane ( he had been specially wieghed and measured to operate this piece of vintage equipment !!!) Possy oversaw the precise loading of the waggon &trailer .After which the immaculate sheeting & roping took place and I mean IMMACULATE when we had finnished he would walk round to the near side (my side) and if all dolly eyes were not in perfect line I had done a rough job and I was down for the teas for the week !!! Sometimes we had an extra 5 ton for a little steel works at Griffiths Town ( I think it was called ) so we would have 19 ton on the 8 wheeler and the rest on the trailer !! The Welshman on the wieghbridge at Griffithstown used just shake his head in disbelief . When we were in South Wales we always stayed at a cracking dig in Llansamlet ----Walfords Cafe run by the Phillips family old Ma. Philips was a Gem !!! When we got tipped in the Abbey we would re-load usually off Gwynne Bowen ( Jack Reece was the Traffic Manager) out of Trostre or Velindre or somtimes MB in Neath ( we spent a few hours in the MB social club !!! ) Our loads were usually 20 ton of tin plate for MB at Aintree or Atherton or sometimes Carlisle. Those were the days !!!
How about Stampers of Penrith, who on earth decided on the brown livery ?
erm, i think thats called non fade,?
once painted with that you cant really tell new from old, they all just blend in, but i suppose it makes a change from white an stickers,

Is this the same 6x2 Dennison that can be seen out and about on the show circuit? Restored by Dennisons themselves?

No problem. It certainly is a tidy example, Dennisons made an exellent job restoring it. The 14 ltr ■■■■■■■ sounds well to!

A few photos out of a book about Marchon,Whitehaven,a place I went in many times - up that bloody hill - when on tanker work.
The AEC MK5 driver would press a button and be loaded with 16 tons of phosphate rock from the docks and away to the works,I wonder how many trips he did up that hill?
Any of you old ■■■■■■■■■ recognise him? And while I’m on rambling away, what happened to West ■■■■■■■■■■ By-Products from Flimby, they ran into Marchon I think, maybe with acid.
Brilliant old clip of Shap Buycrider, reminds me of the Woodhead and A66.
Aye Marra whoos’ta garn on ? I can mind in the 70’s that when our Mcguffie Transport ran 3or 4 loads of new drums a day into Marchon Scotts of Penrith supplied them with a new Atki Borderer with an extra low Diff especially for the rock job out the Dock.I believe it ran on 3 shifts and did into the teens of trips per shift. There was a lad on it called Rodney (I think) .He had driven for H&L on a Dennis then started on a 4 wheeler ERF for a marra of mine Harry Thompson (no longer with us)Bit complicated but hope I have got the thread but no doubt a marra will put me reet !! Bewick.
hi guys any chance of some more pics of bewicks please ?
