Hiya John, IIRC “CG” got fed up with all the jibes about him being an “Eddie” devotee and again IIRC he posted a fair well speech and said he wouldn’t be back on the site EVER !! pity “CF” wasn’t that way inclined
Cheers Dennis.

You sure can “dig em out” Dan’l ! J W Graham in particular as we used to sub loads from them out of Workington Steel which we back loaded from W. ■■■■■■■■ J W G was run in later years by Maurice Graham ( ably assisted by Beatrice!) after George Graham ( Maurice’s brother) parted company with the Family firm and became a Scania dealer in Carlisle which eventually went on the become acknowledged as one of the best Scania Dealerships in the UK alongside IMHO Keltruck. I was friends with both the Graham families as I subbed loads of JWG ( as well as buying trailers of Maurice) but then also becoming a substantial customer of Graham Commercials Scania. But they were very decent people to deal with, well of course as all of us are as natives of GODS Country ■■■■■■■ !
Cheers Bewick.
Further to my previous post regarding J.W. Grahams I remembered that John McGuffie bought a new 180 LXB Atki ( H reg Silver knight) off Grahams when they were Atki dealers and before Scotts of Nottingham opened as Atki Distributors in Penrith. I believe George Graham started to sell Scanias from Embleton ( between Bass Lake and Cockermouth) and John also bought a Scania 80 from Grahams as he did quite a bit of subbing from them out of Workington Steel. It would be around this time early '71 that George Graham parted company from the Family firm and started Graham Commercials in Carlisle as sub dealers to Union Trucks from Newcastle. Grahams eventually became fully fledged Scania Distributors in their own right. Maurice Graham carried on running J. W. Graham at Embleton and sold CF trailers along with running a successful haulage business. And thinking about trailers all the 7x 40ft CF’s I got from John McGuffie when I bought that part of his business were supplied by J.W. Graham and I also bought a number of trailers from them including a Dry freight 40 ft van which I sold on to J & W Watt of Carlisle the other two or three, not just sure now, were CF 40ft flats. Cheers Bewick.

PS have you checked out the “Lucy” posts our mate from L/head got a right pounding from all and sundry for sticking his nose into something he shouldn’t have !!
Wigton based Norman Dowell RIP, Norman was running a D1000 flat with the Ford Turbo engine when I got to know him in about 1969. His main traffic then was running out of Smith Bros Whitehaven. Cheers Dennis.
Noo than Dennis where did you pinch that photo from eh ■■ Ah 'l be coming doon your way seeking copyright fees.
I took that photo about 1961 when I went with Norman one Sunday down to Newport then started delivering Hackney of Aspatria mattresses up the valleys quite a number of drops ending up spending another night kipping in the back on a quality mattress parked up alongside Bridgend bus station. I always remember Western Welsh had a lot a small Albion Nimbuses with Thos Harrington bodys one of which is on the preservation scene in the North East presently. Norman would be 20 then as I was he managed to quit his apprenticeship at Cowans Sheldons I had to stick it out another year. The BMC had a body built by Edmund Crow of Cleator Moor.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Hiya Gerald, fust things fust eh! the cheque is “in the post” but dunt blame me Marra if it niver turns up, you can’t trust the post nowadays eh! With regard to Normans BMC and him been only 20 was that a “lift off” body ? so the motor would weigh under 3 tons? I notice there was a twist hook at the front corner. Cheers Dennis.
Yes Dennis, I did not notice the turnbuckle but when I started to write my first post back in the mists of time were telling me it was a container but was not certain. It was stepped down at the back of the chassis in typical furniture van style so possible the chassis overhang had been shortened. That BMC was a good motor 5 speed box with two speed axle. He certainly was very proud of that wagon and kept it immaculate. After a short time his father bought a long wheelbase Dodge 304 with fixed pantechnicon body on the same job. Emmet (his dad) had run the family coal business in the town prior to this, N’s grandfather with a horse and four wheel flat cart, then a snub nosed Morris Commercial and lastly an Albion FT3 model with a cab by MIlburn Motors I am led to believe but I think it must have been Penmans or some other Scottish body builder as W.P. Bell’s had two Chieftains with the same cab plus they were cousins and their yard was only 100 yards from Emmetts house, the coal yard was where the entrance to British Rayophane aka Sidac, aka Innovia nowadays. Emmett’s Chieftain had a petrol engine and drop sides possibly with a tipping gear as they used to lead coal in bulk from St Helens Colliery at Siddick. This Albion which oddly had a petrol engine was either NAO or NRM registered making it 1953. Attached is a photo of one of Bell’s Chieftains with the same cab.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
