Hi Bewick, I recall when Fred Brown,s depot was a detaches house at Bank End between Thursby & Whinnow. He had two Albion Chieftains FT37 models with attractive curved quarter light coachbuilt cabs made a Bobby Hind,s bodyworks next door to Robsons main depot at Durranhill. These Albions were flat platforms with drop sides and carried lime to be shovelled off by hand. He also got an LAD cabbed Dodge 504 Chinese Six bulk blower which was on contract to West ■■■■■■■■■■ Farmers I think. L600

Hi, was your Dad called Danny and did he drive an AEC Marshall six wheeler for Caunce,s or their other driver whose name I forget and had an AEC Mercury on the same job.? Perhaps I have got the wagons wrong way round I knew Danny often saw him up at Marchon a long time ago now. Cheers, Leyland 600.

Now thats interesting L600,there was also a Farming family from Uldale,Dave Wilson & Sons, that had IIRC a Leyland Comet and a couple of BMC’s contracted to Adam Lythgoe and they shovelled the lime off as well,no tippers and ramps in those days !!Cheers Bewick.

I must not have put the handbrake on tight when I stopped on top of Stainmoor in early March 1962 en route to Leeds with Quaker Oats and got my camera out to take this photo. Do you think it has run back all the way back down Stainmoor onto this site Rob Roy after nearly 50 years.■■ Leyland 600

Which Caunces are you referring to - from Rufford?

If so, the Danny you’re referring to could well be the late Danny Watkinson - I know his nephew.

Yes I did mean Caunces of Rufford, they used to bring fruit and veg to Workington wholesalers then load Marchon products back to Liverpool as a rule.

My Dad drove a number of different wagons at Caunces. There was an old Seddon 4-wheeler with a Perkins in it, an Austin which he had on a milk collection round, an Albion Reiver on general, a Park Royal-cabbed AEC Marshal on general and finally a 1970 Ergomatic Marshal which was the last one he had before going to Allied Mills.

I believe Danny had the last new Mammoth Major at Caunces, which was a big coal tipper - complete with greedy boards.

Hi Dennis, Aye I knew Ole Dyave as he was usually referred towith his two medium wheelbase Leyland Comets and BMCs before that, a pal of mine drove a BMC for him. One day I asked my pal how often they changed the oil on the BMC, “Ivvery neet” was his reply, those BMCs carried nearer 14 ton than the designated 7 1/2 ton frequently into the Millom area which as you know is a hard road and got well flogged on those steep hills such as Muncaster Bank using so much oil that when topping up time came almost the full oil capacity was poured in. Ole Dyave always waved either a sandwich or a cup at you if you met him on the road no time to stop for a meal.

A 1976 shot of the inside of our workshops in Milnthorpe, great garage this but in the wrong place, wished I could have picked it up and plonked it down at the next depot I bought just outside the village.Bewick.

Great shots those L600,did they call that driver John ? can’t just think of his second name. What year would the photo be taken, any idea ? Cheers Dennis.PS IIRC the shots of the Leylands were taken in Ireby outside Bobby McGuffies garage and The Sun Inn where John Peels relics are kept or were kept should I say !!

Dennis I think his surname was Skillicorn ?

Does anybody remember this company■■?

Hi Intercooler, I cannot recall this company at all although the grey matter seem to think that I should. I like the Atki six wheeler its a wonder I don,t remember that one.
Cheers Leyland 600.
