Hi Dennis, I recall visiting paying George and Maurice (Puzzle) a visit along with RWB about 1966 to have a test run in a newfangled Scania LB 80 at their Embleton premises when they first started selling them but neither of us was keen on having one although it was an improvement on the BMC and Dodge that I ran then. Cheers L600.

I knew both “Puzzle” and George fairly well, firstly I used to load off Bass Lake (Beatrice ARrrrrrgh!!!) throughout the 70’s and into the 80’s when I ran McGuffie Transport Services Ltd.,a Bewick subsiduary. Then when I started running Scanias in the later 70’s I bought all the spares from Graham Commercials although during those years we grew to become their largest spares customer but I never bought many new chassis from them over the years. Great people to deal with though as I rated Graham Commercials the best Scania dealers in the UK,Ken Graham ,in patricular, was a very decent lad to deal with.Uncle Puzzle was also (via Beatrice !) OK,his rates out of Workington were not the best but the loads were quick and to exactly where we wanted to go and he always paid promptly !! Did you prefer the BMC to the Trader L600 ? IIRC it was always a bone of contention in those far off days,I was a Trader lad myself, well I would be wouldn’t I flying about with Gab and young Alex !!! Cheers Dennis.

You will git a thick lug if he hears you calling him that, there is no doubt we are both acquainted with him God rest his soul The BMC was a fair wagon which I drove myself and got good service from it. The Dodge was a good un when it was going right but only ever stayed that way for about three days maximum before it broke some thing else, I part exed it at County Garage for a Trader owned by my mate Norman Dowell but never really had much luck with it. Eventually after driver problems I traded them both in for a S21 cabbed Foden 8 wheeler Gardner powered of course and from then on worked on my own.Cheers L600

Well thats what young Alex used to call him,and come to think of it fists used to fly sometimes when they were standing about in the garage !!! I’d forgot about Norman,I used to see him about quite a bit in my early years,he ran out of Smith Bros. and used to load off J & W Watts London Colney office.IIRC he sold his D1000 to a lad in Kendal along with the work opertunity out of Smiths, but marra wasn’t so keen on the way Smiths expected him to work and he didn’t last too long!! Is Norman still about? give him my regards if you come across him,Cheers Dennis.

No Norman passed away about 9 years or more ago, he was driving for Rayophane (Sidac) then went into the dispatch dept however diabetes struck him and he died suddeny after a while. He was only a few days younger tham me ,we started school together, served our time together although he did not complete his apprenticeship the lure of the open highway and a steady contract with Hackney,s got him going with a BMC under 3 ton.

Sorry to hear that Norman has passed away L600,I was just thinking back and IIRC Normans D1000 had the Ford turbo’d engine which they started to offer as an alternative to the V8 ■■■■■■■ and the V8 Perkins, mine had the V8 ■■■■■■■ as that was the only engine available at the time I bought it in May '68.Did your BMC have a 2 speed axle ? and I noted you said you parted with your 2 motors and got an 8wheeler,was this a case of adding both ulw’s of the two 4 wheelers together and being granted one for the ulw of an 8 wheeler ? Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis, My wife and I went downtown this afternoon and the first person we met was Norman’s widow in conversation I told her of our discussion last night she recalls thet he knew you. I was wrong in my estimate it is almost 14 years since he died, how time flies. I have attached a photo I found of his D 1000 in Wigton carnival with a Bristol LH ■■■■■■■■■■ bus heading into town outside Huntingdon’s garage at South End. Yes my BMC had an Eaton 2 speed axle as did the Dodge and Trader. When I exchanged the two four wheelers for an 8 wheeler in 1967 I cant remember how I went about the licensing as they were both on A licences but this was the time when Operator Licensing came out. I probably combined the weights and there were no objections and then shortly after O licensing became law. With a Gardner 6LW, 12 speed box carrying 15 ton it was the bees knees, 42 mph flat out. One night I went from home to Lenham Storage, Maidstone with a load of Kimberly Clark products made at Clifton non stop in 11 hours 5mins not a lot of weight but a marathon nevertheless. Good job we hed paper log sheets !!! Cheers L 600

Thanks for that info on Norman L600,very sad,and another great friend and marra of mine Harry Thompson passed away before his time a good number of years ago now.The “craic” was always good when we came across each other in those ,now, far off days,no cell phones then or CB’s,I don’t know how we managed to operate in those day’s! I bet the new generation would find it impossible to have to return to the “stone age” that we had to work in !!Oh! and here’s a shot of our Atki 4 wheeler in Arnside village carnival mid 70’s.During the 80’s and 90’s when Kendal Torchlight Procession was at its height we regularly had upwards of 20 Tautliners in the parade along with those of other local operators, but I think you will be hard pushed to see 5 or 6 big floats nowadays. It used to be a nightmare for our traffic office as all the different clubs, customers and various other organisations wanted the trailers a couple of days before the Friday procession,it got out of hand for a year or so but we managed, well you couldn’t disappoint all the “little jimmy’s” could you !! Cheers Dennis.

One of the different shapes and sizes of loads we hauled out of Ibis Structual Steel on Shap road in Kendal seen here on one of J.H.Hendersons step frames we borrowed to deliver these sections.Hendersons had used the step frames to deliver Massey Ferguson combines from Kilmarnock.

Aye come on Lads lets put something decent on the site, hows this for starters, although not strictly in ■■■■■■■ at the time the shot would have been taken in circa 1961. HEO 557 Power Plus Octopus at time of delivery to Barrow-in-Furness ( Lancashire).

I remember one of TBs wagon & drag Leylands trveling at high speed on the motorway some years back it was raining & it looked like a tidal wave with the sray off the wheels, I wish I had photographed it, it was certainley a sight to be seen. Regards Larry.

hiya,
Yes Larry it would “bomb on” a bit wouldn’t it and I’ll dare bet Dennis was the one whizzing the coal on, the only time i ever passed it was when it was coming towards me and i would have been driving the same combination but mine would have been donkey’s years more ancient.
thanks harry long retired.

Hello Bewick
You wouldn’t recognise that view now. It’s all changed. Huntington’s has packed in and the Council Offices have been nocked down and are a Health Centre.
